Kirjallisuuskatsauksessa esitellään kokonais- ja tietoarkkitehtuuria ja perustellaan tietoarkkitehtuurin merkityksiä ja hyötyjä. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan merihistorian lähdeaineistojen digitointia. Tarkastelun kohteena on neljä Itämeren menneisyydestä kertovaa tietokantaa sekä yksi yleiseurooppalainen, valmisteilla oleva tietokantahanke. Esimerkkien kautta selvitetään, miksi arkistoaineistoja on päätetty digitoida, miten ja millä perusteella digitoitavat aineistot on valittu sekä sitä, millainen merkitys digitointitoiminnalla on historiantutkijoille. Työ tavoitteena on ottaa kantaa myös siihen, millainen digitointitapa on tutkijoiden näkökulmasta hyödyllisin.
