Finding Software Bugs in Embedded Devices

AbstractThe goal of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the domain of bug discovery in embedded systems which are at the core of the Internet of Things. Embedded software has a number of particularities which makes it slightly different to general purpose software. In particular, embedded devices are more exposed to software attacks but have lower defense levels and are often left unattended. At the same time, analyzing their security is more difficult because they are very “opaque”, while the execution of custom and embedded software is often entangled with the hardware and peripherals. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää kuinka hyvin Jyväskylän yliopiston tietotekniikan laitoksen opiskelijoiden taidot vastaavat toimialan tarpeita. Tietoa opiskelijoiden osaamisesta saatiin heille tehdystä kyselystä sekä tietotekniikan kandidaatin tutkinnon osaamistavoitteista. Tietoa yritysten tarpeista kerättiin alan työpaikkailmoituksista sekä Keski-Suomen alueen yrityksille tarjottujen PROFIT-koulutusten aiheista. Saatuja tietoja vertaamalla saatiin selville, että opiskelijoiden taidot vastaavat hyvin toimialan tarpeita sekä kansallisesti, että Keski-Suomessa.

The expectations of IT for socio-economic and human development in developing countries have been high, but the real benefits and the positive impacts have been somewhat disappointing. The harsh socio-economic and infrastructural context makes the sustainability of an IS a major issue. Technology transfer to Africa has been too dependent on external factors, like international aid donors, and emphasized on technology itself. There is a need for locally developed, appropriate information systems, which are based on local needs and structures. Tutkielman aiheena on tietokoneharrastajien alakulttuuri, jota kutsutaan Amigaskeneksi. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan ensinnäkin niitä kulttuurin ja tietotekniikan puitteita, joiden viitekehyksessä tietokone harrastajat toimivat.
