A clampless and sutureless aortic anastomosis technique using an endograft connector for aortoiliac occlusive disease in which the aorta cannot be cl…
2012
Bypass surgery in aortoiliac or aortofemoral occlusive disease can be technically demanding and hazardous due to huge calcifications and/or patient co-morbidities. We report about mid-term results of a telescoping sutureless aortic anastomosis technique using endografts as connectors to address such challenging situations. This is a single-center experience (2004–2011) in seven patients (63 ± 6 years) requiring aortoiliac (three) or aortofemoral (four) bypass surgery. In six cases, an aortic stent graft was telescoped into the infrarenal aorta and partly deployed within the aorta and partly outside the aorta. In the first case, a bifurcated stent graft was deployed and the iliac legs were …
Comparison of prognostic usefulness (three years) of computed tomographic angiography versus 64-slice computed tomographic calcium scanner in subject…
2010
Coronary computerized tomographic angiography (CTA) has been used as a noninvasive method for ruling out high-grade stenoses. Even in the absence of such stenoses, analysis of coronary atherosclerosis may provide for important prognostic information, and this may be superior to exclusive coronary artery calcium scoring. We tested this hypothesis in patients undergoing CTA for clinical indications who had no stenoses requiring revascularization. From December 2004 to December 2006, 706 consecutive patients who underwent CTA but had no high-grade stenoses were included (58% men, mean age 59 ± 11 years). CTA and coronary artery calcium scoring (Agatston method) were performed using a 64-slice …
Recanalization of complex coronary chronic total occlusions using high-frequency vibrational energy CROSSER catheter as first-line therapy: A single …
2010
Background: Several studies have illustrated the safety and the procedural outcome of high-frequency vibrational energy in guidewire refractory chronic total occlusions (CTOs). Aim: To evaluate the advantage of high-frequency vibrational energy device (CROSSER Catheter) use in coronary complex CTO revascularization as primary strategy. Methods: CROSSER was used as a primary approach if four or more unfavorable angiographic features were observed in the CTO lesions. Results: From May 2007 to February 2009, a CTO percutaneous intervention attempt was performed in 178 lesions of 171 patients (60.1 ± 8.9 age with 49.4 ± 7.2% in ejection fraction). Among these, the CROSSER was used in 46 complex…
A novel 3-d reconstruction system for the assessment of bifurcation lesions treated by the mini-crush technique.
2010
Background: Conventional two-dimensional angiography lacks the ability to properly image the true bifurcation geometry, and its percutaneous coronary intervention-induced changes in the clinical setting. Methods and Results: A novel three-dimensional reconstruction system was investigated by retrospectively analyzing 39 lesions in 35 consecutive patients with coronary bifurcation disease treated with the mini-crush technique. At baseline, significant correlations were proved between two- and three-dimensional systems in terms of either reference vessel diameter (R 2 = 0.68 and 0.29 for main and side branches, respectively), minimum lumen diameter (R 2 = 0.73 and 0.36), stenosis diameter (R …
Effects of oxotremorine and physostigmine on the inhibitory avoidance impairment produced by amitriptyline in male and female mice.
2009
We have previously observed that amitriptyline and other antidepressants produce impairing effects on inhibitory avoidance (also called passive avoidance) in mice of both sexes. In the present study we investigated the involvement of the cholinergic system in the inhibitory avoidance impairment produced by acute amitriptyline in male and female CD1 mice. For this purpose, the effects on said task of acute i.p. administration of several doses of amitriptyline, either alone or in combination with the cholinergic agonists oxotremorine and physostigmine, were evaluated. Pre-training administration of 5, 7.5, 10 or 15 mg/kg of amitriptyline produced a significant impairment of inhibitory avoidan…
The Adult Pituitary Shows Stem/Progenitor Cell Activation in Response to Injury and Is Capable of Regeneration
2012
The pituitary gland constitutes, together with the hypothalamus, the regulatory core of the endocrine system. Whether the gland is capable of cell regeneration after injury, in particular when suffered at adult age, is unknown. To investigate the adult pituitary's regenerative capacity and the response of its stem/progenitor cell compartment to damage, we constructed a transgenic mouse model to conditionally destroy pituitary cells. GHCre/iDTR mice express diphtheria toxin (DT) receptor after transcriptional activation by Cre recombinase, which is driven by the GH promoter. Treatment with DT for 3 d leads to gradual GH+ (somatotrope) cell obliteration with a final ablation grade of 80–90% 1…
Complications of trans-anastomotic externalised stents in open pyeloplasty: influence of the method of placement, the duration of stenting, and the a…
2010
To assess the influence of the method for stent placement, the duration of stenting, and the presence of bladder drainage on the complication rate of open pyeloplasty. Patients and methods: Complications were, retrospectively, compared in 228 consecutive open pyeloplasties performed at institution A using a trans-pyelostomic 6-Fr splint/stent for 5 days and no bladder drainage, and 150 consecutive open pyeloplasties performed at institution B using a trans-nephrostomic 6-Fr splint/stent for 9 days plus bladder drainage. Results: Median age at surgery was comparable between groups. The overall complication rate was 13% and was comparable at the two institutions, but for the presence of perio…
Formation and release of acetylpyrrolidinecholine (N-methyl, N-acetoxyethylpyrrolidinium) as a false cholinergic transmitter in the myenteric plexus …
1977
1. Longitudinal muscle strips of the guineapig small intestine were incubated with Tyrode solution containing the choline analogue pyrrolidinecholine. At the end of the incubation the concentrations of acetylcholine and its analogue acetylpyrrolidinecholine were determined in the strips by gas chromatography. 2. After 120 min of incubation with 1 mM pyrrolidinecholine, acetylpyrrolidinecholine comprised about 15% of the total amount of acetylcholine plus acetylpyrrolidinecholine. Electrical stimulation (1 Hz) of the strips during the incubation slightly increased the proportion of acetylpyrrolidinecholine to 21%. 3. The acetylcholine content of control strips increased significantly during …
Endovascular treatment options for complex abdominal aortic aneurysms
2015
Abstract Purpose To report short-term and midterm outcomes of endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) of complex aneurysms requiring revascularization of visceral arteries. Materials and Methods Prospective data were collected from patients deemed unsuitable for conventional EVAR and conventional surgery who were treated with different endovascular approaches according to the clinical presentation of the aneurysm. Custom-made fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair (CM f-EVAR) was used in the elective setting, homemade fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair (HM f-EVAR) or HM f-EVAR combined with chimney endovascular aneurysm repair (ch-EVAR) was used in the emergent setting in patients with …
