CT Angiography at 24 Months Demonstrates Durability of EVAR With the Use of Chimney Grafts for Pararenal Aortic Pathologies
2013
PURPOSE: To present the 24-month radiological follow-up data for patients with pararenal aortic pathologies treated with chimney and periscope grafts during endovascular repair. METHODS: Between January 2008 and December 2011, 124 high-risk patients with complex pararenal aortic pathologies were treated using the chimney technique at 2 European vascular and cardiovascular centers with advanced experience of the described technique. In particular, 50 patients were treated at Site 1 and 74 at Site 2. Forty (32.2%) patients (32 men; mean age 79.2±4.9 years) completed computed tomographic angiography follow-up at 24 months postoperatively. RESULTS: The overall technical success was 100%, and th…
The Gore Hybrid Vascular Graft in renovisceral debranching for complex aortic aneurysm repair.
2016
Objective This study reports our initial experience with the Gore Hybrid Vascular Graft (GHVG; W. L. Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, Ariz) for staged hybrid open renovisceral debranching and endovascular aneurysm repair in patients affected by thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms and pararenal abdominal aortic aneurysms (PAAAs). Methods Between December 2012 and December 2013, we analyzed outcomes of 13 patients who underwent open surgical debranching of renovisceral vessels for thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm and PAAAs. All patients were considered at high risk for conventional surgery. Inclusion criterion was treatment by open surgical debranching of at least one visceral artery (renal artery…
Spatiotemporal distribution of gp130 cytokines and their receptors after status epilepticus: comparison with neuronal degeneration and microglial act…
2003
Although numerous studies have demonstrated the neurotrophic capacity of gp130 cytokines, it remains unclear whether endogenously expressed cytokines actually function in a direct neuromodulatory manner. Therefore, using the lithium-pilocarpine status epilepticus model, we performed a detailed in situ hybridization time-course study of five gp130 cytokines (interleukin [IL]-6, leukemia inhibitory factor [LIF], IL-11, oncostatin-m [OSM], and ciliary neurotrophic factor), gp130, and the receptors of the cytokines we found to be induced (IL-6 receptor [IL-6R], LIF receptor [LIF-R], and IL-11 receptor [IL-11R]). Additionally, to further understand the regulation of these cytokines, we compared …
Steroid-growth factor interaction in human prostate cancer. 1. Short-term effects of transforming growth factors on growth of human prostate cancer c…
1994
In order to better define potential mechanisms of growth regulation in human prostate cancer cells, we have compared biological responses (such as short-term response to both transforming growth factor alpha and beta; TFG alpha and TFG beta) in relation to hormone sensitivity of LNCaP, DU145, and PC3 cells. Androgen receptor (AR) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R) content of each cell line was also investigated. In addition, expression of EGF, TGF alpha, and TGF beta was evaluated through immunofluorescent staining. Growth of androgen non-responsive PC3 cells was stimulated by TGF alpha (about 35%) and inhibited by TGF beta (more than 50%), with respect to controls, after 48 h exp…

Trans-popliteal hybrid retrograde technique for revascularization of chronic total occlusions of the superficial femoral artery.
2020
Objectives We present the technical description and preliminary results of a hybrid approach for the treatment of chronic total occlusions of superficial femoral artery in the setting of critical limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). Methods A retrospective analysis of selected case series was performed. A trans-popliteal hybrid technique was carried out in seven limbs (six patients). Open exposure of above-the-knee popliteal artery was performed over its maximum calcification zone. After retrograde recanalization and graft-stenting of the entire superficial femoral artery, endarterectomy of the popliteal artery was performed for debulking and widening of the distal landing zone of the endopros…
Impact of biatrial defragmentation in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: Results from a randomized prospective study
2014
Single procedure success rates of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) are still unsatisfactory. In patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF), ablation of complex fractionated atrial electrograms (CFAEs) after PVI results in improved outcomes. We aimed to investigate if PAF-patients with intraprocedurally sustained AF after PVI might benefit from additional CFAE ablation.A total of 1134 consecutive patients underwent a first catheter ablation procedure of PAF between June 2008 and December 2012. In most patients, AF was either not inducible or terminated during PVI. In 68 patients (6%), AF sustained after successful PVI. These patients …
Pringle maneuver increases the risk of anastomotic leakage after colonic resection in rats.
2018
Abstract Background Many centers use the Pringle's maneuver during liver resections. Since this maneuver might impair healing of bowel anastomoses, we evaluated its influence on the healing of colonic anastomosis in rats. Methods Male Wistar rats underwent median laparotomy and sigmoid resection with end-to-end anastomosis under inhalation anesthesia. Thereafter, rats received a 25 minutes Pringle's maneuver (PM, group 1) or were kept under anesthesia for the same period of time (group 2). The anastomotic bursting pressure (BP) was measured on postoperative days (POD) 3, 6 and 9. Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining was used for histopathological evaluation of the anastomosis. The Mann-Whit…
Patency of renal and visceral vessels after open thoracoabdominal aortic replacement.
2015
Objective In thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs), a paradigm shift is observed from open surgery toward total endovascular aortic repair using fenestrated and branched endografts. Whereas outcome after open replacement in terms of mortality and paraplegia has been evaluated extensively, no studies exist addressing long-term patency of visceral and renal vessels. To enable comparison of target vessel patency between open and endovascular treatment, we analyzed our series of open TAAA replacements. Methods Our vascular surgery database was screened for patients who received open TAAA replacement between 1998 and 2012, and patient records were analyzed retrospectively. All available imag…
Reperfusion strategy in Europe: temporal trends in performance measures for reperfusion therapy in ST-elevation myocardial infarction
2010
Aims The rate and type of reperfusion, as well as time delays to reperfusion are directly associated with mortality and are established as performance measures (PMs) in the treatment of ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). To date, little information exists about PMs for reperfusion in clinical practice in Europe and their temporal changes. Methods and results Using the Euro Heart Survey ACS-III data set (2 years of inclusions between 2006 and 2008, 138 centres in 21 countries), we selected patients with STEMI eligible for reperfusion therapy. Recorded variables corresponded to the CARDS data set. The rate and type of reperfusion, as well as door to needle and door to artery times we…
