The right sympathetic nerves of isolated perfused rabbit hearts were stimulated electrically (1 msec, supramaximal strength, 15 sec) with increasing frequencies (0.25–20 Hz) at 3 min intervals before and 20 min after starting perfusion with desipramine, doxepin or iprindole. Measurements of broadband UVB irradiance (290-315 nm) at 14 locations in Spain for the period 2000-2009 have been used to generate instantaneous, hourly and daily values of irradiance (W m(-2)) and radiant exposure (kJ m(-2)). These measurements, and its statistical indices, have been analyzed. For the UVB irradiance, the values corresponding to July (maximum) and December (minimum) have been analyzed as representative of the year during the whole period for all locations. Using an original intact cell analysis, we investigated sex steroid metabolism in a panel of human cancer cell lines, either hormone responsive or unresponsive, originating from human breast, endometrium, and prostate. Non-genomic effects of progesterone on the signaling function of G protein-coupled receptors

Progesterone at concentrations between 10 microM and 200 microM affected the calcium signaling evoked by ligand stimulation of G protein-coupled receptors expressed in several cell lines. At 160 microM progesterone the signaling of all receptors was completely abolished. The effect of progesterone was fast, reversible and was not prevented by cycloheximide indicating its non-genomic nature. Induction of cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) by xenobiotics may lead to clinically relevant drug interactions. In contrast with other CYP3A family members, studies on the inducibility of CYP3A5 indicate conflicting results. We report the induction of CYP3A5 mRNA in 13 of 16 hepatocyte preparations exposed to rifampin. Furthermore, induction of CYP3A5 mRNA was observed in intestinal biopsies in three of eight probands following exposure to the antibiotic. The highest absolute levels of CYP3A5 transcripts were found following rifampin treatment in hepatocytes and intestines from carriers of CYP3A5*1 alleles.
