Association between clusters of diseases and polypharmacy in hospitalized elderly patients: results from the REPOSI study.

BACKGROUND: Although the association between multimorbidity and polypharmacy has been clearly documented, no study has analyzed whether or not specific combinations of diseases influence the prescription of polypharmacy in older persons. We assessed which clusters of diseases are associated with polypharmacy in acute-care elderly in-patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was held in 38 Italian internal medicine and geriatric wards participating in the Registro Politerapie SIMI (REPOSI) study during 2008. Abstract Anthropogenic marine debris is one of the major worldwide threats to marine ecosystems. The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) has established a protocol for data collection on marine debris from the gut contents of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), and for determining assessment values of plastics for Good Environmental Status (GES). Integrated biomonitoring of airborne pollutants over space and time using tree rings, bark, leaves and epiphytic lichens

The integrated use of tree rings and outer tissues, and lichens, was tested for monitoring how pollutant concentrations vary in space and over time nearby an incinerator in industrial area in Central Italy. Trace elements in thalli of lichen Xanthoria parietina and in leaves, bark, wood of Quercus pubescens, as well as carbon, oxygen and nitrogen isotope ratios in tree rings were analyzed. Some trace elements in the leaves differed significantly between the plots, though this was not the case in lichens and bark. The values of δ13C and δ18O showed the same trend in all plots, while the values of δ15N were higher in the distal plot. The results indicated that trace elements were intercepted …
The geological roots of South America: 4.1 Ga and 3.7 Ga zircon crystals discovered in N.E. Brazil and N.W. Argentina

International audience; We present new LA-ICP-MS in situ geochronological results for seven Eoarchean zircons dated at 3.7 Ga coming from Cretaceous ash layers of NW Argentina and one Hadean single crystal sampled within the São Francisco Craton in NE Brazil. This zircon comprises a zoned magmatic core dated at 4.1 Ga surrounded by a 1.9 Ga overgrowth related to Paleoproterozoic reworking. This Hadean age is consistent with previously published Nd model ages on orthogneisses from the same domain. The apparently regular and favourable climate that characterizes the Holocene as an interglacial period shows, however, important climatic instability well documented in the Northern Hemisphere. These fluctuations from colder to warmer or wetter to drier affected both biodiversity and human societies in the last 12,000 years, although the impact in Southern America is still poorly known. 17 pages; The study of "Crioceras" barremense KILIAN was undertaken as a part of the revision of the Hemihoplitidae. This species was considered "classic" and has been used as the index of an Upper Barremian subzone; this usage raises a number of problems. The type specimen from Tyrol was a fragment described and illustrated by UHLIG as Crioceras sp. ind. aff. roemeri. This specimen could not be retrieved, and a topotype could not be collected. International audience; Research in the Feraudianus Subzone of the Sartousiana Zone of the Barremian stage led to the discovery of a new species of Pseudoshasticrioceras: P. bersaci nov. sp. Its study provides evidence concerning the developments of the latest Gassendiceratinae BERT et alii, 2006, and the relationship between the genus Pseudoshasticrioceras DELANOY, 1998, and Gassendiceras BERT et alii, 2006. In particular, this new species is derived from Pseudoshasticrioceras magnini (DELANOY, 1992) by a minor revision in the processes of ontogenesis (retardation of ornamentation - neoteny).
