Grooving by Nd:YAG laser treatment

2000

Abstract The properties of the laser beam have been used to produce deep and thin grooves in metals, melted material being removed with the assistance of a high velocity gas. Preliminary experiments show that the geometry and the location of the gas inlet tube are the main parameters governing the evacuation of the scoria. The influence of the nature of the materials on the depth of the grooves is discussed from examination of the grooves realized on various metals (copper, aluminum, titanium,…). Finally, a statistical study is performed to indicate the parameters that have to be controlled to secure regular grooves. It appears that the groove width is not too much affected by parameter var…

Positron Studies of Subsurface Zone in Titanium Created in Sliding Wear

2014

Positron annihilation studies of the subsurface zone constituted during dry sliding in pure titanium are reported. A new type of defect depth profile in this zone, which is not an exponential decay usually reported for other metals and alloys, is observed. Two layers in the subsurface zone are present in this metal. In the layer adjacent to the worn surface, the characteristic plateau of the mean positron lifetime that extends to a depth of 60–70 μm was observed. Small vacancy clusters and dislocations were recognized in this layer. At deeper zone, the mean positron lifetime decreased exponentially in the manner typical for the other metals. In this zone, vacancy clusters increase in size a…

Photocatalytic degradation of nitrophenols in aqueous titanium dioxide dispersion

1991

Abstract The results are reported of an investigation into the photodegradation of nitrophenol isomers carried out in aqueous titania (anatase) dispersions under various experimental conditions. We investigated the influence of various parameters on the photodegradation rate, such as the concentrations of the catalyst, dissolved oxygen and organic compound, and the presence of various anions in the dispersion. A plausible explanation is proposed for the influence of these parameters, both mechanistic and kinetic factors being accounted for. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry were used as analytical methods in order to determine intermediate products. Spectroscopic methods (UV-vis and …

Photoactivity and Chemical Reactivity in Titanium(IV)-Organic Frameworks

2020

Impact of Organoaluminum Compounds on Phenoxyimine Ligands in Coordinative Olefin Polymerization. A Theoretical Study

2013

The reduction of the phenoxyimine moiety in three individual species—namely free ligand, aluminum complex, and titanium complex—with aluminum alkyls and aluminum hydride has been studied by means of DFT. It was demonstrated that the free phenoxyimine ligand in an equimolar mixture with trimethylaluminum does not undergo reduction. Instead, experimentally observed formation of the six-membered cyclic aluminum–phenoxyimine complex, useful in the ring-opening polymerization of lactones, takes place as the kinetically and thermodynamically favored process. However, it is anticipated that a 2-fold excess of the aluminum compound, especially aluminum hydride, acting on the resulting cyclic comple…

Structural Changes of Titanium Oxide Induced by Chromium Addition as Determined by an X-Ray Diffraction Study

1995

Abstract An X-ray diffraction study has been carried out on a series of polycrystalline TiO 2 (anatase) catalysts containing Cr(III) at different atomic concentrations (0.2-5.0 at. %), prepared by a co-precipitation method. Analysis of the variation of the unit cell parameters of chromium-doped anatase with respect to pure anatase has allowed us to estimate the solubility limit for the system at around 1.4 at. %. There is no evidence for the existence of a separate crystalline chromium oxide phase. Temperature effects on the cell parameter and on the anatase-rutile transformation rate were also analyzed. An increase in temperature produced release of the chromium from the solid solution. At…

Assessing osseointegration of metallic implants with boronized surface treatment

2020

Background Modification of endosteal implants through surface treatments have been investigated to improve osseointegration. Boronization has demonstrated favorable mechanical properties, but limited studies have assessed translational, in vivo outcomes. This study investigated the effect of implant surface boronization on bone healing. Material and Methods Two implant surface roughness profiles (acid etched, machined) in CP titanium (type II) alloy implants were boronized by solid-state diffusion until 10-15µm boron coating was achieved. The surface-treated implants were placed bilaterally into 5 adult sheep ilia for three and six weeks. Four implant groups were tested: boronized machined …

Concentration of chromium and nickel in serum of patients with orthopedic implant: An analysis

2021

Introduction: Surgical corrections of fracture using fixation devices made from various alloys (stainless steel, cobalt-chromium alloys, and titanium) carry a risk of these alloys leaching into circulation, potentially causing undesired health effects. Hence, monitoring the levels of metal ions in the serum of postoperative patients with metal implants is mandated. Materials and Methods: Blood samples from seventy patients with orthopedic metal implants was collected after a minimum postoperative period of 1 year. The samples were subjected to triple acid digestion and serum levels of chromium and nickel were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Results: The concentr…

Combined NC-AFM and DFT study of the adsorption geometry of trimesic acid on rutile TiO2(110)

2010

The adsorption behavior of trimesic acid (TMA) on rutile TiO(2)(110) is studied by means of non-contact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) and density-functional theory (DFT). Upon low-coverage adsorption at room temperature, NC-AFM imaging reveals individual molecules, centered above the surface titanium rows. Based on the NC-AFM results alone it is difficult to deduce whether the molecules are lying flat or standing upright on the surface. To elucidate the detailed adsorption geometry, we perform DFT calculations, considering a large number of different adsorption positions. Our DFT calculations suggest that single TMA molecules adsorb with the benzene ring parallel to the surface plane. In…
