Coordinated Interpersonal Behaviour in Collective Dance Improvisation: The Aesthetics of Kinaesthetic Togetherness

2018

International audience; Collective dance improvisation (e.g., traditional and social dancing, contact improvisation) is a participatory, relational and embodied art form which eschews standard concepts in aesthetics. We present our ongoing research into the mechanisms underlying the lived experience of "togetherness" associated with such practices. Togetherness in collective dance improvisation is kinaesthetic (based on movement and its perception), and so can be simultaneously addressed from the perspective of the performers and the spectators, and be measured. We utilise these multiple levels of description: the first-person, phenomenological level of personal experiences, the third-perso…

Social engagement, mood, and mortality in old age

2017

Social relationships, social activity, and experiencing fulfilment of interpersonal needs are essential aspects of well-being in older people. The purpose of this research was twofold: first, to investigate the associations of various dimensions of social activity and perceived togetherness with indicators of health decline; and second, to identify potential mediators in these associations. This dissertation is based on data from two research projects. The first, the Evergreen project, is a multidisciplinary, longitudinal follow-up study on the health and functional capacity of people aged 65–84 in 1988 (n=1 181) resident in Jyväskylä, Finland. Data on institutionalization and mortality wer…

Building children’s sense of community in a day care centre through small groups in play

2016

This study examines the process through which children build a sense of community in small groups in a day care centre. The study asks the following: how does children’s sense of community develop, and what are its key features? Data were collected by applying ethnographic methods in a group of three- to five-year-old children over eleven months. The results show that children’s sense of community developed through three stages. In the first stage, it evolved gradually through experiences in joint play. In the second stage, stable friendships were formed and strengthened in play. In the third and final stage, sense of community was fully established and children’s emotional bonding was stro…

Współczesna metropolia: tożsamość i formy bycia razem jej mieszkańców

2018

The following paper examines the Baumanian “forms of togethernes” in the space of the contemporary metropolis, both in the West (Europe, the USA), and the developing world (China). Zygmunt Bauman understands togetherness as a totality of interhuman actions, occurring in the city space. Paradoxically, the contemporary metropolis which often seems hostile towards traditional bourgeois urban life opens up new possibilities of mutual relations between contemporary citizens. The space in the contemporary city is neither fully artificial, nor natural, but it merges some features of both. Although its infrastructure is governed by effectiveness of molecular capitalism, it is not fully predicable i…
