Autonomy and Agency
2021
This chapter reviews autonomy and agency as related to second language (L2) learner and teacher psychology. It discusses the significance of the two constructs in understanding the personal, yet socially mediated nature of L2 learning and teaching processes. Psychology and education seem to be the main disciplines that have influenced developments in fostering on autonomy in second language acquisition (SLA). Research on autonomy has typically been conducted on the initiative of a teacher or groups of teachers working in their specific educational contexts and with their specific groups of students. Compared to agency, autonomy has had a much longer history in SLA, and it has been researche…
Motivational strategies as perceived and implemented by future L2 teachers : a comparison of two groups of Finnish university students
2012
Motivaatiotutkimus on vuosikymmeniä keskittynyt motivaatioon oppijan näkökulmasta luoden erilaisia motivaatioteorioita. Motivaatio on erittäin tärkeä tekijä vieraan kielen oppimistulosten selittäjänä, joten viime vuosikymmenellä kiinnostuttiin myös käytännön toimista, joita opettaja voi toteuttaa parantaakseen oppilaiden motivaatiota luokkahuoneissa. Näitä toimia kutsutaan motivointistrategioiksi. Tulevien vieraiden kielten opettajien käsitykset ja kokemukset motivointistrategioista Suomessa olivat lähes tutkimaton aihe, joten kyseinen näkökulma otettiin tähän tutkimukseen. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli määrällisten menetelmien avulla saada käsitys tulevien opettajien yleisestä tietoisuudes…

Narratives in L2 Learner Identity Development
2019
This article focuses on second or foreign language (L2) learner identity and its development as discursively constructed, and we will summarize four studies conducted on this topic. The studies were conducted in the context of L2 teacher education in Finland, and the participants were student teachers (pre-service teachers) or recently qualified teachers of English or other L2s. As data we made use of narratives in different modes (oral, written, visual). The summarizing of the studies will be followed by a joint critical discussion of the theoretical and methodological lessons learned and possible applications. peerReviewed
Recipient Design by Gestures : How Depictive Gestures Embody Actions in Cooking Instructions
2022
This paper investigates how depictive gestures, i.e., hand movements that depict actions, scenes or objects, are configured and used for accomplishing instructions. By drawing on video recordings of second language interactions in cooking classes for newcomers in Finland, we focus on instructions that project a certain type of complying bodily action as the relevant next action. We demonstrate that the instructions are designed to be sensitive not only to the contingencies of the material ecology of the kitchen but also to the epistemic and linguistic asymmetries between the participants. The analysis shows how depictive gestures contribute to the forward-feeding function of cooking instruc…
Beyond error correction in EFL writing in a Finnish upper secondary classroom : a practical approach
2023
In Finland, teachers have considerable autonomy over their assessment practices. Recent studies suggest that FL/L2 teachers, particularly at the upper secondary school, primarily focus on summative assessment rather than on formative assessment and feedback, which is in contrast with the latest Finnish National Core Curricula. Furthermore, while appreciating teacher feedback, learners do not perceive it as an integral part of assessment. In this paper, we propose formative classroom practices to support the learning process and go beyond error correction in FL/L2 writing. These practices are grounded on our earlier research, and they focus mainly on two themes: fostering learner choice in f…

Återbesök till feedback : en fallstudie av fokus och form på webbkursen Hjälpis
2017
Tämän maisterintutkielman tutkimuskohteena on palaute Jyväskylän yliopiston Kielikeskuksen valinnaisella ruotsin Hjälpis-verkkokurssilla. Tutkintovaatimuksiin pakollisena kuuluvan toisen kotimaisen kielen, ruotsin taitojen osoittamisen KORU-arviointikriteerien B1-tasolla on aikaisemmissa tutkimuksissa arvioitu olevan haaste riittämättömien taitojen takia jopa puolelle yliopisto-opiskelijoista.
Chinese university students' beliefs about second language acquisition
2015
Xitian, Fu. 2015. Beliefs about Second Language Acquisition from Chinese University Students. Master's Thesis in Education. University of Jyväskylä. Department of Education. Beliefs about second language acquisition (SLA) have intrigued pioneer investigators for more than 30 years. However, until quite recently, most studies have been conduced in the Western school context. This study aims to investigate Chinese university students’ beliefs about second language acquisition (SLA) originating from a completely different social context. This study attempts to obtain new insights of English language learning as experienced by Chinese university students within a specific social cultural contex…
