Multiple food hypersensitivity as a cause of refractory chronic constipation in adults

2006

Chronic constipation that is unresponsive to laxative treatment is a severe illness, but children unresponsive to laxatives have been successfully treated with an elimination diet. We report the first cases of refractory chronic constipation caused by food hypersensitivity in adults. Four patients with refractory constipation who were unresponsive to high doses of laxatives were put on an oligo-antigenic diet and underwent successive double-blind, placebo-controlled, food challenges (DBPFC). Routine laboratory tests, immunological assays, colonoscopy, esophago-gastroduodenoscopy and rectal and duodenal histology were performed. While on an elimination diet, bowel habits normalized in all pa…

Resistin, acute coronary syndrome and prognosis results from the AtheroGene study

2006

Resistin, an adipocyte and macrophage derived cytokine, causes insulin resistance and glucose intolerance. We investigated the impact of resistin as a diagnostic marker in patients with acute coronary syndrome and its prognostic value for future cardiovascular events.Resistin levels were determined in 1153 patients with stable angina (SAP), 380 patients with unstable angina, 278 patients with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and 111 patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). All patients have been followed up for a median follow-up of 2.6 years. During follow-up, 70 patients died from cardiovascular causes.Compared to SAP, resistin levels (5.1 ng/mL in SAP) wer…

Improvements in functional capacity from Nordic walking: a randomized-controlled trial among elderly people.

2011

This study examined the effects of an instructed structured Nordic walking (NW) exercise program on the functional capacity of older sedentary people. Volunteers were randomly assigned to an NW group (68.2 ± 3.8 yr old) or control group (69.9 ± 3.0 yr old). Before and at the end of the 9-wk intervention, functional tests and 2-dimensional ground-reaction-force (GRF) patterns of normal (1.40 m/s) and fast (1.94 m/s) walking speeds were measured. The intervention included a 60-min supervised NW session on an inside track twice a week for 9 wk. The mean changes in functional tests differed between groups significantly. Gait analyses showed no significant differences between the groups on any G…

A Popular myth - low-histamine diet improves chronic spontaneous urticaria - fact or fiction?

2016

Background Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CsU) is a frequent dermatological disease that might last for months or years with high impact on quality of life. Known causes are autoreactive phenomena, infections or intolerances, rarely IgE-mediated allergies. One third of CsU patients benefit from a low-pseudoallergen diet. Additionally, it is often discussed, that reducing histamine ingestion alone might improve clinical symptoms and quality of life in CsU-patients despite the uncertain role of the histamine-degrading enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO). Objective Aim of this study is to investigate the impact of low-histamine diet on symptoms and quality of life in patients with CsU. Methods Patien…

Hydralazine is a powerful inhibitor of peroxynitrite formation as a possible explanation for its beneficial effects on prognosis in patients with con…

2005

The hemodynamic and anti-ischemic effects of nitroglycerin (GTN) are rapidly blunted as a result of the development of nitrate tolerance. Hydralazine has been shown to prevent tolerance in experimental and clinical studies, all of which may be at least in part secondary to antioxidant properties of this compound. The antioxidant effects of hydralazine were tested in cell free systems, cultured smooth muscle cells, isolated mitochondria, and isolated vessels. Inhibitory effects on the formation of superoxide and/or peroxynitrite formation were tested using lucigenin and L-012 enhanced chemiluminescence as well as DHE-fluorescence. The peroxynitrite scavenging properties were also assessed by…

Effects of vitamin e and glutathione on glucose metabolism: Role of magnesium

1999

Abstract —Vitamin E is an antioxidant that has been demonstrated to improve insulin action. Glutathione, another natural antioxidant, may also be important in blood pressure and glucose homeostasis, consistent with the involvement of free radicals in both essential hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Our group has recently suggested that the effects of reduced glutathione on glucose metabolism may be mediated, at least in part, by intracellular magnesium levels (Mg [i] ). Recent evidence suggests that vitamin E enhances glutathione levels and may play a protective role in magnesium deficiency–induced cardiac lesions. To directly investigate the effects of vitamin E supplementation on insul…

Decellularized tracheal prelamination implant: A proposed bilateral double organ technique

2021

Introduction In tracheal replacement transplantation, prelamination is a critical stage. Nowadays, the most widely used prelamination technique is the prethoracic fascia flap with lateral thoracic artery. We propose a flap based on the internal thoracic artery, which allows a relatively non-aggressive double organ implant, and we have tested its efficacy in decellularized tracheas. Material and methods Tracheas of albino New Zealand rabbits were decellularized following a protocol that uses detergents and cryogenization, sterilized with 1kGy gamma radiation and tutorized with a stent. Bilateral pedicled flaps made of pectoral fascia and a muscular component were harvested through a longitud…

Exercise training improves peak oxygen consumption and haemodynamics in patients with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension and inoperable chronic t…

2015

Aims The impact of exercise training on the right heart and pulmonary circulation has not yet been invasively assessed in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) and right heart failure. This prospective randomized controlled study investigates the effects of exercise training on peak VO2/kg, haemodynamics, and further clinically relevant parameters in PH patients. Methods and results Eighty-seven patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and inoperable chronic thrombo-embolic PH (54% female, 56 ± 15 years, 84% World Health Organization functional class III/IV, 53% combination therapy) on stable disease-targeted medication were randomly assigned to a control and training group. Association of Depressive Symptoms With Impaired Glucose Regulation, Screen-Detected, and Previously Known Type 2 Diabetes

2010

OBJECTIVE To study the association between impaired glucose regulation (IGR), screen-detected type 2 diabetes, and previously known diabetes and depressive symptoms. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Altogether, 2,712 participants from three hospital districts in Finland attended a health examination. Cutoff scores ≥10 and ≥16 in the 21-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-21) were used for depressive symptoms. The participants were defined as having known diabetes if they reported diabetes. An oral glucose tolerance test was used to detect normal glucose regulation (NGR), impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and screen-detected diabetes. The participants were defined…

Kinetics of the reactive cell clones after immunosuppression and induction of tolerance. II. Different recovery of 19 S and 7 S plaque-forming cells …

1975

By the aid of two alkylating agents (cyclophosphamide (CP) and 036.5122, (Asta), applied after a single dose of antigen, tolerance to sheep red blood cells (SRBC), has been induced in NMRI mice. Duration and characteristics of recovery were followed by a second antigenic challenge at various time intervals and by determination of 19 S and 7 S plaque-forming cells (PFC) 4 days later. During recovery from the tolerant state two phases of responsiveness could be differentiated: an early phase with no or markedly reduced numbers of total PFC, all of them being of the IgM type; a later phase with a steady increase in total PFC up to normal values, paralleled by an increase in the proportion of 7…
