Food intolerance and chronic constipation: manometry and histology study

BACKGROUND: Chronic constipation in children can be caused by cows' milk intolerance (CMI), but its pathogenesis is unknown. AIMS: To evaluate the histology and manometry pattern in patients with food intolerance-related constipation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-six consecutive children with chronic constipation were enrolled. All underwent an elimination diet and successive double-blind food challenge. All underwent rectal biopsy and anorectal manometry. RESULTS: A total of 14 patients were found to be suffering from CMI and three from multiple food intolerance. Early-onset tolerance in rat global cerebral ischemia induced by a mitochondrial inhibitor

It was studied whether a subtoxic dose of the mitochondrial neurotoxin, 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NPA), can initiate early-onset tolerance induction for subsequent ischemic injury. Wistar rats were pretreated for 3 h by intraperitoneal 3-NPA (20 mg/kg body weight; n=13) or solvent (n=12). Fifteen minutes global cerebral ischemia was induced by bilateral carotid artery occlusion and hypobaric hypotension. rCBF and tissue hemoglobin oxygen saturation were measured by laser Doppler scanning and a microspectrophotometric method. Changes in Cardiovascular Performance During an 8-Week Military Basic Training Period Combined with Added Endurance or Strength Training

ABSTRACT The purpose of the present study was to examine the changes in cardiovascular performance (VO2 max) and maximal strength development during an 8-week basic training (BT) combined with emphasized endurance training (ET) or strength training (ST) among 72 conscripts. The emphasized ST and ET programs combined with BT improved VO2 max by 12.0% (p < 0.01) and 8.5% (p < 0.05), while the increase in the control group (normal training) was 13.4% (p < 0.001). Body fat and waist circumference decreased in all groups. Normal training did not increase maximal strength of leg extensors but both ST (9.1%; p < 0.05) and ET (12.9%; p < 0.01) did.
