Ozone Therapy as a treatment modality for temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction [abstract]
2018
Temporo-mandibular (TMJ) disorders are of multi-factorial etiology. Numerous attempts have been made to identify the causes however, a great controversy still exists. Emotional stress, malocclusion and bruxism of the teeth are thought to be important factors in TMJ disorders. The limitations of mouth opening, deviation of the mandible on opening, joint noises and pain are among the common signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders. Concerning the treatment, different surgical and non- surgical techniques have been tied by several clinicians. In the recent years, ozone therapy is tried as a new treatment modality for many diseases particularly joint affection. So this study was carried out to asses…
Multiple dens invaginatus, mulberry molar and conical teeth : case report and genetic considerations
2009
Dens in dente, also known as dens invaginatus and dilated compound odontoma, is a malformation that can occur on primary, permanent, or supernumerary teeth that is characterized by a deep invagination of the surface of a crown or root covered with enamel. This abnormality in tooth morphology generally affect the maxillary lateral incisors but several cases of multiple dens invaginatus have been reported in the literature. A 15 year-old female patient is reported here presenting five dens invaginatus: four in the permanent mandibular incisors and one in the permanent, maxillary left central incisor, additionally the following dental findings were observed: a permanent mandibular left mulberr…

Trismus as the first manifestation of cholangiocarcinoma
2008
The initial presentation of a cholangiocarcinoma (CC) as trismus due to metastasis to the parotid gland is extremely rare and no previous reports have been found in the literature. A 29-year-old woman presented trismus that initiated 2 months before admission, just after superior left third molar extraction. Physical examination revealed severe trismus and a mass in the parotid gland. Computed tomography (CT) showed a heterogeneous mass in the left parotid gland. The next day she presented jaundice, bilirubinuria, and fever, followed by massive bleeding, intravascular disseminated coagulation, and respiratory insufficiency. Two days later she died. At autopsy, the parotid tumor was identifi…
Infected lingual osseous choristoma : report of a case and review of the literature
2008
Osseous choristoma is a rare, benign lesion of the oral cavity occurring usually in the tongue. It appears as a tumorous mass of normal bony structure with mature cells in an ectopic position. The case of a 72 years Caucasian male is presented and analyzed along with 52 similar cases reported in the English literature between 1967 and 2007. Lingual choristoma shows a female predilection, whereas the commonest anatomic location is the posterior third of the tongue, occurring at or close to the foramen caecum and the circumvallate papillae. Histologically the lesions show signs of a well-circumscribed mass of vital bone located under the surface oral epithelium. Some lesions represent develop…
The development of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia in oral lichen planus: a preliminary study
2016
Background: Was to describe 14 cases of a proliferative verrucous leukoplakia as a clinical evolution of oral lichen planus. Material and Methods: The clinical and histopathological characteristics of 14 cases of OLP that progress towards a plaque-like and verrucous form were indicated, with monitoring over a period of six to 24.3 years. Results: The female/male ratio was 11/3, (78.6 and 21.4%). The mean age when the first biopsy was undertaken was 56.4 years old. None of the patients smoked during the study. As bilateral reticular was clinically diagnostic criterion, the second most frequent clinical form was the plaque form (n=10; 71.4%), followed by the atrophic (n=6; 42.8%), and erosive…
Taurodontism: a review on its etiology, prevalence and clinical considerations
2010
Taurodontism can be defined as a change in tooth shape caused by the failure of Hertwig’s epithelial sheath diaphragm to invaginate at the proper horizontal level. An enlarged pulp chamber, apical displacement of the pulpal floor, and no constriction at the level of the cemento-enamel junction are the characteristic features. Although permanent molar teeth are most commonly affected, this change can also be seen in both the permanent and deciduous dentition, unilaterally or bilaterally, and in any combination of teeth or quadrants. Whilst it appears most frequently as an isolated anomaly, its association with several syndromes and abnormalities has also been reported. Despite the clinical c…
