Hydrogeological and geotechnical modeling of the foundation soils of Maredolce Lake in Palermo, aided by geophysical surveys

2019

The cultural heritage of Maredolce (Palermo) includes an Arab-Norman castle that originally stood on the shores of an artificial lake carved out of a basin dug out of the calcarenite and filled with water thanks to the channeling of the springs of San Ciro upstream. Subsequently, the lowering of the water table and the high hydraulic permeability of the outcropping rocks caused the lake to dry up. Recently, a project of enhancement of the cultural heritage required the restoration of the lake. The geophysical study presented here, including the integrated use of different techniques such as electrical and seismic tomography, Multichannel Analysis of the Surface Waves and ambient vibration r…

New insights into seismic absorption imaging

2020

Abstract In recent years, attenuation has been used as a marker for source and dynamic Earth processes due to its higher sensitivity to small variations of lithospheric properties compared to seismic velocity. From seismic hazard analysis to oil and gas exploration and rock physics, many fields need a better reconstruction of energy absorption, a constituent of seismic attenuation generally considered a reliable marker of fluid saturation in space. Here, we propose absorption tomography (AT), a technique grounded on the principles of scattering tomography and Multiple Lapse Time Window Analysis. We benchmark its efficiency to image absorption in space by comparing its results with those obt…

Understanding seismic path biases and magmatic activity at Mount St Helens volcano before its 2004 eruption

2020

SUMMARY In volcanoes, topography, shallow heterogeneity and even shallow morphology can substantially modify seismic coda signals. Coda waves are an essential tool to monitor eruption dynamics and model volcanic structures jointly and independently from velocity anomalies: it is thus fundamental to test their spatial sensitivity to seismic path effects. Here, we apply the Multiple Lapse Time Window Analysis (MLTWA) to measure the relative importance of scattering attenuation vs absorption at Mount St Helens volcano before its 2004 eruption. The results show the characteristic dominance of scattering attenuation in volcanoes at lower frequencies (3–6 Hz), while absorption is the primary atte…

Crustal Structure of the Seismogenic Volume of the 2010–2014 Pollino (Italy) Seismic Sequence From 3D P- and S-Wave Tomographic Images

2021

A tomographic analysis of Mt. Pollino area (Italy) has been performed using earthquakes recorded in the area during an intense seismic sequence that occurred between 2010 and 2014. 870 local earthquakes with magnitude ranging from 1.8 to 5.0 were selected considering the number of recording stations, the signal quality, and the hypocenter distribution. P- and S-wave arrival times were manually picked and used to compute 3D velocity models through tomographic seismic inversion. The resulting 3D distributions of VP and VS are characterized by high resolution in the central part of the investigated area and from surface to about 10 km below sea level. The aim of the work is to obtain high-qual…

Seismic velocity structures of Southern Italy from tomographic imaging of the Ionian slab and petrological inferences.

2012

International audience; In this study we have determined detailed Vp and Vs seismic velocity models of the Ionian lithosphere subducting beneath the Tyrrhenian basin and of the surrounding mantle, by applying a post-processing technique to a large sample of local earthquake tomography studies. Our seismic velocity models permit us to infer the presence of low velocity anomalies within the slab, which we interpret as regions that are partially hydrated by fluids released during the subduction process. A petrological interpretation of the velocity anomalies gives new details on the magmatism of the volcanic Aeolian arc. Furthermore our velocity models provide a more detailed description of th…

Engineering 3D ordered molecular thin films by a nanoscale control

2010

This perspective aims to report on experimental preparation and investigation tools for engineering molecular thin films with a three-dimensional (3D) nanoscale control that is of relevant interest for different emerging applications as well as for the development of calibration standards. Such thin films may be obtained by man-made methods, self-assembly or spatio-temporal self-organization and/or by the combination of these last approaches with external tools. Understanding the main features and the physical-chemistry underlying the related ordering phenomena is in due course and a theoretical framework is under development. In this respect it is of fundamental importance to achieve the a…

Postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy modifies skeletal muscle composition and function: a study with monozygotic twin pairs

2009

We investigated whether long-term hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is associated with mobility and lower limb muscle performance and composition in postmenopausal women. Fifteen 54- to 62-yr-old monozygotic female twin pairs discordant for HRT were recruited from the Finnish Twin Cohort. Habitual (HWS) and maximal (MWS) walking speeds over 10 m, thigh muscle composition, lower body muscle power assessed as vertical jumping height, and maximal isometric hand grip and knee extension strengths were measured. Intrapair differences (IPD%) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. The mean duration of HRT use was 6.9 ± 4.1 yr. MWS was on average 7% (0.9 to 13.1%, P = 0.019) and muscle…

Interference of left and right cerebellar rTMS with procedural learning.

2004

Abstract Increasing evidence suggests cerebellar involvement in procedural learning. To further analyze its role and to assess whether it has a lateralized influence, in the present study we used a repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation interference approach in a group of normal subjects performing a serial reaction time task. We studied 36 normal volunteers: 13 subjects underwent repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on the left cerebellum and performed the task with the right (6 subjects) or left (7 subjects) hand; 10 subjects underwent repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on the right cerebellum and performed the task with the hand ipsilateral (5 subjects) or contral…

Multivariate modelling of geophysical tomography data to identify a tectonized area

2018

An integrated analysis approach, based on geological investigations and 2D high-resolution shallow geophysical data, was proposed along a slope in the Bellolampo landfill area (Palermo, Italy) where the presence of a fault zone was hypothesized. Geophysical surveys included electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), induced polarization tomography (IPT) and seismic refraction tomography (SRT) techniques. The inversion of single geophysical parameter often does not allow to justify the complexity of the subsoil structures. The most appropriate solution should be to add additional physical or geological information so to get a constrained geological model. However, it is not at all easy to work…
