Cerebral arachnoid cyst: a lesion of the child's brain.

1989

39 patients with 42 arachnoid cysts have been reviewed in a retrospective study. All kinds of arachnoid cysts reported in the literature were also found in this study. These consist mainly of congenital primary and post-traumatic secondary cysts. Cysts which cause no major neurological deficits require conservative treatment of symptoms only. Cysts which cause major symptoms because of their space occupying nature, however, require surgical treatment. Craniotomy with removal of membranes to allow free physiological circulation of CSF is the treatment of choice in our hands. Cysto-peritoneal shunting is an alternative procedure for patients in a poor condition. More than 50% (23 out of 39 ca…

Age-dependent decline of steady state dopamine storage capacity of human brain: an FDOPA PET study.

2010

Conventional indices of the utilization of FDOPA in living human brain have not consistently revealed important declines in dopamine function with normal aging. However, most methods of kinetic analysis have assumed irreversible trapping of decarboxylated FDOPA metabolites in brain, an assumption that is violated even in PET recordings of short duration. Therefore, we have developed methods for the calculation of steady-state storage of FDOPA together with its decarboxylated metabolites (V(d), mlg(-1)), based upon improved kinetic analysis of 120-min emission recordings. In a group of 28 normal male subjects, of age ranging from 23 to 73 years, the magnitude of V(d) in the striatum and in e…

Characteristics of recurrent chronic rhinosinusitis after previous surgical therapy.

2008

Our findings emphasize the role of a thorough diagnostic evaluation preoperatively and a targeted long-term medical therapy following any sinonasal surgery for inflammatory disease. Early onset of long-term aspirin desensitization can address a very predominant inflammatory stimulus in a large number of our patients in an effort to prevent recurrent chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) after successful surgical therapy.Postoperative recurrence of CRS, regardless of the ongoing evolution of diagnostic and surgical techniques, still poses an unsolved problem. This investigation was designed to further characterize the role of aspirin intolerance (AI) and inhalant allergies as persistent inflammatory s…

Non-Invasive Assessment of Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts and Native Coronary Arteries Using 64-Slice Computed Tomography: Comparison With Invasive Co…

2010

Introduction and objectives Although the diagnostic accuracy of CT in the non-invasive assessment of coronary arteries and grafts is known to be high, only a few studies have investigated the technique's reliability for the combined assessment of native coronary arteries, grafts, and vessels lying distal to anastomoses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of 64-slice CT for assessing coronary grafts and native coronary arteries. Methods In the study, 64-slice CT was used to evaluate 36 patients who had undergone coronary artery bypass graft surgery and had a clinical indication for angiographic graft assessment. The diagnostic accuracy of CT for identifying signifi…

Ruptured angiomyolipoma of the kidney: a rare differential diagnosis of flank pain.

2017

Angiomyolipomas (AMLs) of the kidney are typically benign and rare, with an incidence of 2% of all renal masses [1]. They are associated with tuberous sclerosis in about 20% of cases. If ruptured, ...

Changes in anterior chamber eye during accommodation as assessed using a Dual Scheimpflug system

2014

Purpose: To study the changes in anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber angle (ACA), and pupil diameter (PD) during accommodation. Methods: Eighty eyes of 80 subjects, aged 22 to 40 years, were included. The rotating Dual Scheimpflug and a Placido disc system (Galilei G4, Ziemer Ophthalmic Systems AG, Switzerland) was used to measure the changes in ACD, ACA, and PD during accommodation. ACD measurement was taken for the central zone and for 4 more positions, each in different orientation (nasal, superior, temporal and inferior), 4 mm away from the centre. ACA was measured for the whole eye as well for the nasal, superior, temporal, and inferior quadrants. These metrics were obtained…

Aortic dissection detected by transoesophageal echocardiography

1986

The diagnostic value of transoesophageal echocardiography was evaluated in 24 patients with aortic dissection and compared to transthoracic two-dimensional echocardiography, computer tomography, aortography, surgery and autopsy. Using transoesophageal echocardiography we found in 5 patients a type I dissection, in 5 patients a type II and in 14 patients a type III dissection. Transthoracic two-dimensional echocardiography was positive in 3/5 type I, 2/5 in type II and 2/14 in type III dissections. Computer tomography was unable to demonstrate an intimal flap in 1/2 patients with type I, 2/3 type II and 1/11 type III dissections. Aortography was negative in 1/4 type I, 3/5 type II and 3/12 p…

A case of atypical sporadic hemiplegic migraine associated with PFO and hypoplasia of vertebro-basilar system.

2009

We describe the case of a patient with atypical hemiplegic migraine and associated basilar symptoms, where a large patent foramen ovale (PFO) and hypoplasia of basilar artery were found. The longer period of 4-year remission of the headache attacks was coincident with the percutaneous PFO closure. When 5 years after, hemiplegic migraine attacks relapsed, with more relevant basilar symptoms, a mild re-opening of PFO was found. The atypical presentation of attacks with basilar symptoms and prolonged hemiplegia does not strictly fit the diagnostic criteria of ICHD-II.

Multisectorial changes in the ciliary muscle during accommodation measured with high-resolution optical coherence tomography

2019

ABSTRACT Purpose: To measure changes in the anterior ciliary muscle during accommodation at the nasal, superior, temporal, and inferior sectors by means of an anterior chamber optical coherence tomographer, and correlate them with vergence changes. Methods: Twenty-four subjects with healthy, phakic eyes, whose mean age was 27.1 ± 8.9 years, underwent measurement with an anterior chamber optical coherence tomographer. The anterior ciliary muscle was measured at the nasal, temporal, superior, and inferior sectors for 0, -1, -2, and -3 D of vergence. A linear model was used to assess the correlation of each eye parameter with the accommodative demand. Results: The anterior ciliary muscle area …

[123I]IBZM SPECT in patients treated with typical and atypical neuroleptics: relationship to drug plasma levels and extrapyramidal side effects

1997

[123I]Iodobenzamide (IBZM) is an iodine-labeled dopamine receptor ligand and can be used to visualize brain D2 receptors in humans with single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT). The ratio of striatal IBZM uptake to uptake in frontal cortex (ST/FC ratio) represents a semiquantitative measure of D2 receptor binding in the striatum. Our study sample included six patients treated with haloperidol (3.0-8.0 mg/day orally; one patient with an average of 0.9 mg/day intramuscularly), five patients with benperidol (9.0-15.0 mg/day orally) and nine patients treated with clozapine (200.0-600.0 mg/day orally). Typical neuroleptics (TNs) and atypical neuroleptics (ANs) were significantly di…
