This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding the application of various sensors and monitoring techniques to machining processes, cutting tools and machine tools. A number of monitoring methods used in manufacturing and relevant sensors are characterized. In particular, three most frequently used sensors, i.e., force, acceleration and acoustic emission, are presented and their characteristics and advantages are highlighted. Abstract The study proposes a tool developed within the TRNSYS environment aimed at integrating its building simulation features during the use phase with a Life Cycle Assessment approach. Push-and-pull enteroscopy using a single-balloon technique for difficult colonoscopy.

Background and study aims Several factors predict difficult or incomplete colonoscopy with a standard colonoscope, including female gender, low body mass index, extensive diverticulosis, and prior pelvic surgery. Patients and methods A push-and-pull enteroscopy device and a single-balloon technique was used in 14 patients (six men, eight women; mean age 62 +/- 15 years) after failure of ileocolonoscopy or endoscopic therapy using either a standard or a pediatric colonoscope. Abstract Finite Element simulation of orthogonal cutting is nowadays assuming a large relevance; in fact a very large number of papers may be found out in technical literature on this topic. In recent years, numerical simulation was performed to investigate various phenomena such as chip segmentation, force prediction and tool wear. Design of the friction stir welding tool using the continuum based FEM model

In friction stir welding (FSW), the welding tool geometry plays a fundamental role in obtaining desirable microstructures in the weld and the heat-affected zones, and consequently improving strength and fatigue resistance of the joint. In this paper, a FSW process with varying pin geometries (cylindrical and conical) and advancing speeds is numerically modeled, and a thermo-mechanically coupled, rigid-viscoplastic, fully 3D FEM analysis able to predict the process variables as well as the material flow pattern and the grain size in the welded joints is performed. The obtained results allow finding optimal tool geometry and advancing speed for improving nugget integrity of aluminum alloys.

Internationalisation level, Distribution of Decision-Making Power and Alliance Formation: Evidence from the Italian Machine Tool Industry

We explore how internationalization-orientation and family business-configuration influence the propensity of Italian Machine Tool (MT) firms to sign strategic alliances. Starting from the industry sector analysis and literature review we propose a conceptual framework explaining alliance formation determinants. Our study uses the information provided by a representative sample of Italian MT firms. We argue and our data validate that the centralization of decision-making power acts as a moderator enhancing the positive effect of the internationalization on the firm inclination in signing agreements with other companies.
