Periodontal impact of surgically induced dental lesions in mandibular osteodistraction: An animal study.
2009
SUMMARY. Aim: The objective of the study was to evaluatethe impact of dental lesions on the periodontium, in a canine model of mandibular osteodistraction. Material and methods: In six adult male Beagle dogs, an osteotomy was made between the right second lateral incisor and canine, and a distraction device placed. The roots adjacent to the osteotomy were deliberately damaged by the reciprocating saw and chisel, with preservation of the attached gingiva. The osteodistraction protocol used was: latency of 7 days, rate of distraction 1 mm per day, and rhythm once a day for 5 days. Vital staining was carried out with tetracycline, Xylenol Orange and Calcein Green. The dogs were sacrificed afte…
In vivo effects of an Er:YAG Laser, an ultrasonic system and scaling and root planing on the biocompatibility of periodontally diseased root surfaces…
2003
Background and Objectives The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vivo effects of an Er:YAG laser (ERL), an ultrasonic system and scaling and root planing (SRP) on the biocompatibility of periodontally diseased root surfaces in cultures of human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDL). Study Design/Materials and Methods Forty single rooted teeth, considered for extraction due to severe periodontal destruction, have been randomly assigned to the following groups: (1) ERL at 160 mJ/pulse and 10 Hz, or (2) Vector® ultrasonic system (VUS), or (3) SRP using hand instruments, or (4) untreated control (C). Immediately after instrumentation, all test and control teeth were extracted a…
Incidence and predictive factors for perforation of the maxillary antrum in operations to remove upper wisdom teeth: prospective multicentre study.
2006
Our aim was to evaluate the incidence of perforations of the sinuses and their related treatment after the removal of upper wisdom teeth depending on various anatomical and clinical variables.A total of 1057 upper wisdom teeth were removed under local anaesthetic in the departments of oral surgery at the Universities of Bonn, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Mainz, Germany. Data were collected with the help of an anonymised questionnaire dealing with information about the patients, and the position and stage of the development of teeth, as well as the occurrence and size of an oro-antral communication and its treatment.Of 465 extractions and 592 osteotomies of the upper third molars, 134 intervent…
Radiographic Investigation of Location and Angulation of Curvatures in Human Maxillary Incisors
2008
The aim of this radiographic study was to evaluate the degree and location of root canal curvatures of human maxillary incisors. A total of 286 extracted human maxillary incisors (145 central and 141 lateral incisors) were included in this investigation. Exclusion criteria were teeth with extensive carious lesions, restorations, and root canal treatment. For this in vitro study, the teeth were fixed in a special device and digitally x-rayed with the parallel technique. The distances from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) to the first curvature and the according angle were recorded. The results were analyzed descriptively, and p values were calculated with the Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney test. The …
Mandibular Molar Root Resection Versus Implant Therapy: A Retrospective Nonrandomized Study
2009
AbstractSuccess rates for both periodontal and implant therapy are often dependent on site and tooth type. For periodontally involved mandibular molars, the decision to hemisect or to extract and place an implant is often complicated. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the outcomes of the aforementioned treatment modalities for mandibular molars in a private practice setting. A retrospective chart review was performed. In one group of patients (n = 32), 56 mandibular first or first and second molars were treated by hemisection (Group H). A second group (n = 28) received 36 implants in the mandible to replace periodontally involved first or first and second molars (Group I). Al…
3-Dimensional Analysis and Systematic Review of Root Canal Morphology and Physiological Foramen Geometry of 109 Mandibular First Premolars by Micro-c…
2019
Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to systematically revise the root canal configuration (RCC) literature and to investigate the root canal morphology of mandibular first premolars (Ma1Ps) of 2 populations by means of micro–computed tomographic imaging. Methods This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines including RCC randomized controlled trials and cross-sectional, cohort, comparative, validation, and evaluation studies. Furthermore, the RCC, physiological foramina, the frequency of accessory and connecting canals, and the physiological foramina morphology of 109 Ma1Ps were investigated by means of micro–co…
Simultaneous occurrence of compound odontoma and arrested root formation as developmental disturbances after maxillofacial trauma: a case report.
2009
Traumatic injury to a primary tooth and/or a bone fracture has the potential to damage the underlying permanent tooth germ which may disturb its development. The extent of the malformation depends on the developmental stage of the permanent tooth and the intensity of the trauma. The presence of infection may be a predictive factor for these abnormalities. Open surgical procedures can also potentially cause impaction and developmental disturbances. Several developmental alterations such as discolouration, hypoplasia, crown dilaceration, root angulation or dilaceration, sequestration of permanent tooth buds and disturbance in eruption have been reported in permanent teeth after trauma. Howeve…
Usefulness of combining clinical and radiological dental findings for a more accurate noninvasive age estimation.
2007
: The aim of this study was to establish correlations of clinical and radiological dental findings, alone or in combination, with chronological age in adults. Dental findings and orthopantomograms of 984 patients (aged 20–60 years; 524 females/460 males) were analyzed. DMF-T index and distance (alveolar bone level, ABL) between cemento-enamel junction and alveolar bone margin were recorded. Additionally, clinical and radiological findings at each tooth crown and root were collected according to the actual status of destruction and restoration, and a total score for each dentition (TSD) was calculated. After univariate correlation analysis, correlation coefficients for ABL and TSD were impro…
Intrapulpal temperature changes during root surface irradiation with an 809-nm GaAlAs laser
2002
The aim of this study was to explore, in vitro, whether the irradiation of human root surfaces with a diode laser might induce nonphysiologic intrapulpal temperature elevations and, therefore, jeopardize pulp vitality. The pulps were removed from human maxillary and mandibular incisors extracted for periodontal reasons. The root canals were enlarged to an apical size #60 file. The teeth were radiographed with standard dental films and a millimeter grid to determine root thickness. The thickness of dentin between the root surface and the pulp in the irradiation areas was 1, 2, and 3 mm. To determine intrapulpal temperature changes during laser irradiation, 0.5-mm K-type thermocouples were ins…
Effect of diode laser irradiation on root surfaces in vitro.
2002
The objective of this study was to evaluate possible morphological alterations of root surfaces after GaAlAs-diode laser (809 nm) irradiation under standardized in vitro conditions.Root specimens obtained from extracted periodontally diseased teeth were scaled and root planed with curettes followed by air-powder abrasive treatment prior to lasing. The variable parameters were power output (0.5-2.5 W) and exposure time (10-30 sec per specimen). Additionally, the effect of a saline solution and a human blood film on the root surface was investigated. The root segments were analyzed by means of a reflected light microscope. Photographs before and after irradiation were taken and evaluated. The…
