Proliferative response of cells of the dentogingival junction to mechanical stimulation

2001

SUMMARY The aim of this research was to study the proliferative response of junctional epithelium (JE) and gingival connective tissue (GCT) to mechanical stimulation in vivo with regard to the potential occurrence of apical migration of JE and loss of GCT attachment during orthodontic tooth movement. Elastic bands were inserted between the maxillary first and second molars of male rats aged 8 weeks, which were pulse-labelled with 3 H-thymidine and subsequently killed in groups, together with labelled control animals (a total of 98 rats) after periods of 1‐168 hours. Autoradiographs were prepared from plastic mesiodistal sections, and parameters of cell proliferation for JE and GCT of the pa…

Management of shortened dental arches and periodontal health: 5-year results of a randomised trial

2014

Summary In a multicentre randomised trial (German Research Association, grants DFG WA 831/2-1 to 2-6, WO 677/2-1.1 to 2-2.1.; controlled-trials.com ISRCTN97265367), patients with complete molar loss in one jaw received either a partial removable dental prosthesis (PRDP) with precision attachments or treatment according to the SDA concept aiming at pre-molar occlusion. The objective of this current analysis was to evaluate the influence of different treatments on periodontal health. Linear mixed regression models were fitted to quantify the differences between the treatment groups. The assessment at 5 years encompassed 59 patients (PRDP group) and 46 patients (SDA group). For the distal meas…

Dental anomalies in a Portuguese population

2013

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and pattern of agenesis, supernumerary teeth, impacted teeth and transpositions, as well as the relation between them, in a Portuguese sample. The study sample consisted of 2888 patients, observed between 2005 and 2009 at the Dentistry Clinic of the Instituto Superior de Ciências da Saúde-Norte (ISCSN, Portugal). The study included evaluation of the following parameters: agenesis of all teeth, supernumerary teeth, impacted permanent teeth and tooth transposition. The age range varied from 7 to 21 years. In order to study the absence of the third molar, subjects aged below 14 years were excluded. Statistical analysis was performed using SPS…

Efficacy of methylprednisolone on pain, trismus and quality of life following surgical removal of mandibular third molars: a double-blind, split-mout…

2021

Background The objective of the present study was to compare the efficacy of different doses of methylprednisolone on postoperative sequelae and quality of life (QoL) following surgical removal of mandibular third molars (SRM3). Material and Methods Fifty-two patients (16 men and 36 women, mean age 25.9 years, range: 18-39) with bilateral impacted mandibular third molars were randomly allocated into intraoperative muscular injection of either 20mg, 30mg, 40mg methylprednisolone or saline injection. Baseline measurements were obtained preoperatively and compared with assessment after one day, three days, seven days and one month. Pain and trismus were estimated by visual analog scale score a…

Preemptive analgesic effectiveness of oral ketorolac plus local tramadol after impacted mandibular third molar surgery

2010

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare preemptive analgesia of oral ketorolac plus submucous local placebo with oral ketorolac plus submucous local tramadol after impacted mandibular third molar surgery. Study design: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted. Patients were randomized into two treatment groups (n = 15 per group): group A, oral ketorolac 10 mg, 30 minutes before surgery plus submucous local placebo (1 mL saline solution); group B, oral ketorolac 10 mg, 30 minutes before surgery plus submucous local tramadol (50 mg diluted in 1 mL saline solution). We evaluated the intensity of pain, time for the first analgesic rescue medication, an…

Eruption cysts: A series of 66 cases with clinical features

2016

BAYRAK, SULE/0000-0001-7023-2358; Tuloglu, Nuray/0000-0001-6410-9126 WOS: 000399208700014 PubMed: 28160586 Background: An eruption cyst (EC) is a benign, developmental cyst associated with a primary or permanent tooth. This paper presents 66 ECs in 53 patients who reported to 3 different centers in Turkey between 2014-2015. Material and Methods: 53 patients (31 male, 22 female) with 66 ECs were diagnosed and treated over a 1-year period. The mean age of patients was 5.4 years (minimum 5 months, maximum 11 years). Clinical examination and periapical radiographs were used to establish diagnosis. Age, gender, site, history of trauma and type of treatment were recorded. Results: Of the 66 ECs d…

Extraction socket healing in rats treated with bisphosphonate: Animal model for bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of jaws in multiple myeloma pati…

2010

Aim: The aim of this study is to replicate both clinical and histological presentation of bisphosphonate induced osteonecrosis of the jaws (BONJ) in an animal model of the disease state. Successful recapitulation of a BONJlike indication in an animal model will be useful for studying pathogenesis, as well as prevention and treatment strategies for BONJ. Materials and Methods: Eighty (80) rats were prospectively and randomly divided into two groups; control group(40) and study group(40). All animals in study group, injected with a dose of 1 mg/kg dexamethasone (DX) subcutaneously on day 7, 14, or 21; and 1, 2, or 3 doses of 7.5 ?g/kg zoledronic acid (ZA) subcutaneously administered to coinci…

Effects of the serjania erecta and zeyheria montana ethanol extracts in experimental pulpitis in rats: A histological study

2012

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate, by the semi-quantitative histological analysis, the anti-inflammatory activity of the ethanolic extracts of Serjania erecta e Zeyheria Montana, in experimental pulpits in rats. Study Design: In order to induce pulp inflammation, cavities were performed on the occlusal surface of the mandibular first molars of 45 male rats, without pulp exposure. The animals were distributed into 4 groups: GI, teeth without cavities; GII, single dose of saline solution via intraperitoneal (IP); GIII, single dose (IP) of 300mg/Kg of ethanolic extract of Zeyheria montana; GIV, single dose (IP) of 300mg/Kg of ethanolic extract of Serjania erecta. After 6, 12 an…

Is the injection of tramadol effective at control of pain after impacted mandibular third molar extractions? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

2022

Third molar extraction is among the most common surgical procedures performed by oral-maxillofacial surgeons. Postoperative pain, swelling and trismus are common, especially in wisdom teeth, due to trauma to local tissues and the duration of the surgical procedure, among other factors. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the ?Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses? in order to answer the focused question: ?Is the local submucosal injection of tramadol effective at the control of postoperative pain in patients submitted to impacted mandibular third molar extractions??. We analyzed papers published until March 30, 2021 in the MEDLINE|PubMed, Web…

The Bronze Age burials from Cova Dels Blaus (Vall d′Uixó, Castelló, Spain): An approach to palaeodietary reconstruction through dental pathology, occ…

2005

This paper reports a palaeodietary investigation of the human remains found in the collective Bronze Age burial cave from Vall d'Uixó (Castelló, Spain). Dental pathology, tooth wear as well as buccal dental microwear were analysed. Percentages of dental pathologies were compared with Chalcolithic and Bronze Age sites from the same territory. Dental caries, ante-mortem tooth loss, periodontal disease and abscess frequencies indicate a diet rich in carbohydrate foods. However, dental calculus percentages and macroscopic wear patterns suggest a diet not exclusively relying on agricultural resources. In addition, buccal dental microwear density and length by orientation recorded on micrographs …
