Short-latency stretch reflex modulation in response to varying soleus muscle activities.

The current investigation examined the effect of various types of background muscle contractions on the short-latency stretch reflex (SLR) elicited from the soleus muscle while subjects were in a sitting position. A stretch was applied to the calf muscles while they performed an isometric (pre-ISO), shortening (pre-SHO) and lengthening contraction (pre-LEN) with several pre-contraction levels. The ankle was at a 90 degrees tibio-tarsal joint angle when the perturbation was applied. Neuromuscular changes after long-lasting mechanically and electrically elicited fatigue

Central fatigue was investigated under an isolated active condition whereby the possible effects of supraspinal fatigue were minimized. Therefore, ten subjects were fatigued by simultaneously and repeatedly mechanically stretching and electrically stimulating their calf muscles for 1 h. This was performed using an ankle ergometer. The active fatigue task included a total of 2400 muscle stretches with an intensity of 10% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Investigating centre of mass stabilisation as the goal of posture and movement coordination during human whole body reaching

In the light of experimental results showing significant forward centre of mass (CoM) displacements within the base of support, this study investigated if whole body reaching movements can be executed whilst keeping the CoM fixed in the horizontal axis. Using kinematic simulation techniques, angular configurations were recreated from experimental data imposing two constraints: a constant horizontal position of the CoM and an identical trajectory of the hand to grasp an object. Cycling exercise and the determination of electromechanical delay.

The main aim of the present paper was to address the validity of a methodology proposed in a previous paper [Li L, Baum BS. Electromechanical delay estimated by using electromyography during cycling at different pedaling frequencies. J Electromyogr Kinesiol 2004;14(6):647-52], aimed at determining the electromechanical delay from pedaling exercise performed at various cadences. Twelve trained subjects undertook pedaling bouts corresponding to combinations of cadences ranging from 50 to 100 RPM and power output from 37.5% to 75% of Pmax. Do Stretch Durations Affect Muscle Mechanical and Neurophysiological Properties?

International audience; The aim of the study was to determine whether stretching durations influence acute changes of mechanical and neurophysiological properties of plantar flexor muscles. Plantar flexors of 10 active males were stretched in passive conditions on an isokinetic dynamometer. Different durations of static stretching were tested in 5 randomly ordered experimental trials (1, 2, 3, 4 and 10×30-s). Relationship between isokinetic performance and ballistic movement

The present experiments were carried out to assess the relationship between the mechanical behaviour of the leg extensor muscles in 12 male athletes during activities of a ballistic type and torque production, during: (1) torque production during isokinetic contraction: (2) ballistic type activities (vertical jumps from statis position = SJ, with counter-movement equal CMJ and after a fall from different heights equal DJ) and (3) a new anaerobic test (Bosco 1983a). This study investigated the influence of the torque produced by plantar flexor muscles on cortical and spinal excitability during lengthening and shortening voluntary contractions. To that purpose, modulations of motor-evoked potential (MEP) and Hoffmann (H) reflex were compared in the soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) during anisometric submaximal and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the plantar flexor muscles.
