Occupational hygiene in a Finnish drum composting plant

Bioaerosols (microbes, dust and endotoxins) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were determined in the working air of a drum composting plant treating source-separated catering waste. Different composting activities at the Oulu drum composting plant take place in their own units separated by modular design and constructions. Important implication of this is that the control room is a relatively clean working environment and the risk of exposure to harmful factors is low. However, the number of viable airborne microbes was high both in the biowaste receiving hall and in the drum composting hall. In fruheren Versuchen an isolierten subcellularen Strukturen des Hundeherzens war eine Freisetzung von gebundenem Ca durch Herzglykoside beschrieben worden [3–5]. Da das cellular gebundene Ca vorwiegend in einer Bindung an die Lipoidkomponente der Membranstrukturen vorzuliegen scheint [1], wurde gepruft, ob Digitalis die Ca-Bindung an Lipoide zu beeinflussen vermag. A synthetic hexapeptide (Argireline) with antiwrinkle activity

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) represent a revolution in cosmetic science because of their remarkable and long-lasting antiwrinkle activity. However, their high neurotoxicity seriously limits their use. Thus, there is a need to design and validate non-toxic molecules that mimic the action of BoNTs. The hexapeptide Ac-EEMQRR-NH2 (coined Argireline) was identified as a result of a rational design programme. Noteworthy, skin topography analysis of an oil/water (O/W) emulsion containing 10% of the hexapeptide on healthy women volunteers reduced wrinkle depth up to 30% upon 30 days treatment. Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Aa toxin is a coleopteran specific toxin highly active against Colorado Potato Beetle (CPB).We have recently shown that Cry3Aa toxin is proteolytically cleaved by CPB midgut membrane associated metalloproteases and that this cleavage is inhibited by ADAM metalloprotease inhibitors. N-Methyldehydroamino acids promote a configuration cis of N-methylamide bond

Abstract Dehydroamino acids with a methylated N-terminal tertiary amide bond occur in natural small cyclic peptide toxins. To investigate their conformational preferences a systematic theoretical analysis was performed on N ′-methylamides of N -acetyl- N -methyldehydroamino acids (Ac-Δ(Me)Xaa-NHMe, where Xaa = ( Z )-Abu, ( E )-Abu, Val, ( Z )-Phe, and ( E )-Phe) considering the configuration trans and cis of the tertiary amide bond. Killer Toxins of Yeasts: Inhibitors of Fermentation and Their Adsorption.

The killer toxin (KT 28), a glycoprotein of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain 28, was almost completely adsorbed by bentonite, when applied at a concentration of 1 g per liter. No significant differences were found between several types of bentonite. Killer toxin KT 28 is similarly adsorbed by intact yeast cells or by a commercial preparation of yeast cell walls that has been recommended to prevent stuck fermentations. An investigation of the cell wall fractions revealed that the toxin KT 28 was mainly adsorbed by mannan, that removed the toxin completely.
