Antioxidant activity and phenolic composition in pomegranate (Punica granatumL.) genotypes from south Italy by UHPLC-Orbitrap-MS approach

2018

Background: Pomegranate fruits are a rich source of polyphenols with numerous health-promoting effects. Pomegranate juices of five genotypes ('Mollar', 'Kingdom', 'Dente di Cavallo', and two old populations 'Francofonte' and 'Santa Tecla') were evaluated regarding anthocyanin and non-anthocyanin phenolic contents using ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC)-Orbitrap-mass spectrometry (MS). Moreover, total antioxidant activity (TAA) was evaluated using a 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) assay.; Results: Twenty-three phenolic compounds were identified. Cyanidin-3,5-O-diglucoside and pelargonidin-3,5-O-diglucoside were the most represent…

Innovative Green Technologies of Intensification for Valorization of Seafood and Their By-Products

2019

The activities linked to the fishing sector generate substantial quantities of by-products, which are often discarded or used as low-value ingredients in animal feed. However, these marine by-products are a prominent potential good source of bioactive compounds, with important functional properties that can be isolated or up-concentrated, giving them an added value in higher end markets, as for instance nutraceuticals and cosmetics. This valorization of fish by-products has been boosted by the increasing awareness of consumers regarding the relationship between diet and health, demanding new fish products with enhanced nutritional and functional properties. To obtain fish by-product-derived…

Synthesis and influence of fatty acid esters on the foliar penetration of herbicides

1998

Abstract Synthesis of mono-esters of tetraethylene glycol and di-esters of tetraethylene glycol was accomplished from fatty acids and tetraethylene glycol in the absence of solvent and catalyst. Esterification was studied in a batch reactor by using a response surface methodology to evaluate the influence of synthesis variables such as molar substrate ratio of fatty acid relative to tetraethylene glycol (1.39–7.52), temperature (145–167°C), reaction time (0.5–8 h) on the yield of mono- and di-esters of tetraethylene glycol. A multipurpose reactor was developed for the transformation of fatty acids into pure α-monoglycerides. The 1-monoglycerides of heptanoic, undecelenic, oleic, linoleic an…

‘Monitoring’ in translation

2019

Abstract We assume that visual feedback from the written trace during translation plays an important role in monitoring the emerging translation. In this study, 44 participants translated with and without visual feedback from the target text (TT). Numerous measures were used to explore the differences between the texts that were created in the two conditions and the characteristics of the task performance in the two conditions. The impact of ST-TT semantic and syntactic relationships showed that there were differences on two of three behavioural measures across conditions. In the comparison of features of the translation process, findings show that ST reading times were longer without visua…

The look of writing in reading. Graphetic empathy in making and perceiving graphic traces

2021

This article presents preliminary considerations and results from a research project designed to investigate the relation between (i) gestures, (ii) graphic traces and (iii) perceptions. More specifically, the project aims to test the hypothesis that graphic traces, including handwriting, can set up graphetic empathy between writers and readers of traces across long temporal and spatial distances. Insofar as a graphic trace is lawfully related to the gesture by which it came into being, the trace itself will hold information about the gesture, which may resonate with the sensorimotor system of a perceiver as if they themselves performed the gesture. If this is in fact so, it will have impor…

Cribra orbitalia as a potential indicator of childhood stress: Evidence from paleopathology, stable C, N, and O isotopes, and trace element concentra…

2016

Cribra orbitalia (CO), or porotic hyperostosis (PH) of the orbital roof, is one of the most common pathological conditions found in archaeological subadult skeletal remains. Reaching frequencies higher than 50% in many prehistoric samples, CO has been generally attributed to a variety of factors including malnutrition (e.g., megaloblastic anemia) and parasitism. In this study, we tested the relationship between CO, trace element concentrations, and stable isotope values (δ13C, δ15N, δ18O) in subadult skeletons from a 17th to 18th century cemetery in the historic town of Jēkabpils, Latvia. A total of 28 subadults were examined, seven of which (25%) showed evidence of CO. Bioarchaeological ev…

Does the source matter?

2018

Abstract This article provides an insight into the expression of reportative evidentiality in Spanish scientific articles published between 1799 and 1920. Central to the discussion is the presence and specificity of sources in reportative constructions. While contemporary scientific discourse prioritizes the use of specific, reportative-quotative evidentials, this is not a constant feature of articles analyzed in this study. In order to trace this historical variation, we established a classification of reportative constructions according to the specificity of the evidence they convey and we conducted both qualitative and quantitative analyses. According to our results, different specificit…

Colorimetric quantitation of trace amounts of sodium lauryl sulfate in the presence of nucleic acids and proteins

1992

A fast and sensitive procedure for the colorimetric detection of sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) is presented. The assay is based upon the formation of a chloroform-extractable ion pair between lauryl sulfate and methylene blue that is quantified spectrophotometrically with an estimated detection limit of 150 ng of SDS. The method is suitable for the monitoring of contaminating traces of SDS in protein or nucleic acid samples that have the potential to interfere with enzymatic manipulations such as proteolytic digest, restriction analysis, or reverse transcription. Since the procedure is extremely simple and no special equipment is required it is accessible to every researcher concerned with SD…

Supercritical CO2 extraction of oil, fatty acids and flavonolignans from milk thistle seeds: Evaluation of their antioxidant and cytotoxic activities…

2015

International audience; The optimal conditions of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) (160-220 bars, 40-80 degrees C) technology combined with co-solvent (ethanol), to recover oil, flavonolignans (silychristin, silydianin and silybinin) and fatty acids from milk thistle seeds, to be used as food additives and/or nutraceuticals, were studied. Moreover, the antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of the SC-CO2 oil seeds extracts were evaluated in Caco-2 carcinoma cells. Pressure and temperature had a significant effect on oil and flavonolignans recovery, although there was not observed a clear trend. SC-CO2 with co-solvent extraction at 220 bars, 40 degrees C was the optimum treatment to recov…

Menstrual problems and lifestyle among Spanish university women

2020

Menstrual problems affect many young women worldwide, conditioning both their academic performance and quality of life. This study sought to analyse the prevalence of menstrual problems and their possible relationship with lifestyle among Spanish university women, as part of a research project (UniHcos Project) involving a cohort of 11 Spanish universities with 7208 university students. A descriptive analysis was performed using the bivariate chi-square test and the Student&rsquo
