Abstract The ubiquitous nature of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) pleads for common molecular and genetic determinants across different plant taxa. The cellular processes determining compatibility in early interactions prior to and during cell contact between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant roots are starting to be unraveled. The root epidermis is an active checkpoint where signal exchanges and control over root colonization occur. Recent progress has significantly improved the understanding of signal transduction pathways in plants, including the activation of light-signalling networks and the tightly controlled generation of the calcium message. Cell compartmentation is important for the regulation and proliferation of these signalling processes.

A secondary mode of action of the herbicide lenacil: Modification of K+ permeability of Acer pseudoplatanus cells

Abstract The action of lenacil on plasmalemma permeability to K+, transmembrane electric potential difference (PD) calculated from the tetraphenylphosphonium distribution, proton extrusion and intracellular pH of Acer pseudoplatanus cells calculated from the 5,5-dimethyloxazolidine,4-dione distribution, was studied and compared with the action of fusicoccin (FC) and diethylstilbestrol (DES). The three compounds temporarily stimulated the rate of 86Rb+ uptake with a half-maximum effect at 5.0 μM for 3-cyclohexyl-6, 7-dihdro-1H-cyclopentapyrimidine-2,4(3H,5H)-dione (lenacil). Granulation and microbial community dynamics in the chitosan-supplemented anaerobic treatment of wastewater polluted with organic solvents.

Abstract The effect of chitosan on the development of granular sludge in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors (UASB) when treating wastewater polluted with the organic solvents ethanol, ethyl acetate, and 1-ethoxy-2-propanol was evaluated. Three UASB reactors were operated for 219 days at ambient temperature with an organic loading rate (OLR) of between 0.3 kg COD m −3 d −1 and 20 kg COD m −3 d −1 . One reactor was operated without the addition of chitosan, while the other two were operated with the addition of chitosan doses of 2.4 mg gVSS −1 two times. Pulsed electric field and pH assisted selective extraction of intracellular components from microalgae Nannochloropsis

Abstract The study was aimed at investigation of the potential of pulsed electric field (PEF) pre-treatment as a preliminary step of pH-assisted aqueous extraction of algae components from microalgae Nannochloropsis suspensions. The PEF and sonication (S) were compared as pretreatment methods. They were applied at normal (pH = 8.5) and basic (pH = 11) conditions, and supplementary basic extraction (at pH = 11) was done. Fish introductions and light modulate food web fluxes in tropical streams: a whole-ecosystem experimental approach.

Decades of ecological study have demonstrated the importance of top-down and bottom-up controls on food webs, yet few studies within this context have quantified the magnitude of energy and material fluxes at the whole-ecosystem scale. We examined top-down and bottom-up effects on food web fluxes using a field experiment that manipulated the presence of a consumer, the Trinidadian guppy Poecilia reticulata, and the production of basal resources by thinning the riparian forest canopy to increase incident light. Behaviour of alkyl oleates following foliar application in relation to their influence on the penetration of phenmedipham and quizalofop-P-ethyl

Summary The foliar penetration of four alkyl oleates (methyl to butyl) and their influence on the penetration of phenmedipham and quizalofop-P-ethyl was studied in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), cleavers (Galium aparine L.) and pea (Pisum sativum L.). Loss of alkyl oleates from glass and plant surfaces was inversely related to the length of the alkyl chains and was assumed to be due to volatilization. All four alkyl oleates after application alone, readily penetrated into pea and barley leaves but much less into G. aparine. The Application of a Plant Biostimulant Based on Seaweed and Yeast Extract Improved Tomato Fruit Development and Quality

Plant biostimulants are under investigation as innovative products to improve plant production and fruit quality, without resulting in environmental and food contaminations. Here, the effects of the application of Expando, a biostimulant based on seaweed and yeast extracts, on plant productivity, fruit ripening times, and fruit quality of Solanum lycopersicum var. Micro-Tom were evaluated. Lithops plants consist of a pair of succulent leaves inserted on a short stem; each growing season young leaves develop in a cavity formed between the older pair. Young leaves can take up water from the older pair allowing the plant to maintain growth and leaf expansion even without external supply of water. Recycling water between vegetative organs is one of the possible adaptation strategies of plants under drought stress, but it had never been demonstrated experimentally in Lithops.
