Non-Gaussian Signatures in the Lens Deformations of the CMB Sky. A New Ray-Tracing Procedure

2003

We work in the framework of an inflationary cold dark matter universe with cosmological constant, in which the cosmological inhomogeneities are considered as gravitational lenses for the CMB photons. This lensing deforms the angular distribution of the CMB maps in such a way that the induced deformations are not Gaussian. Our main goal is the estimation of the deviations with respect to Gaussianity appeared in the distribution of deformations. In the new approach used in this paper, matter is evolved with a particle-mesh N-body code and, then, an useful ray-tracing technique designed to calculate the correlations of the lens deformations induced by nonlinear structures is applied. Our appro…

Ray-tracing through N-body simulations and CMB anisotropy estimations

2007

The fully nonlinear evolution of galaxy clusters and substructures –given by N-body simulations– is used to simulate maps of the Rees-Sciama (RS) effect. The universe is covered by simulation boxes and photons move across them. A recent technique for ray-tracing through N-body simulations is described in detail and implemented. It is based on the existence of preferred directions (to move photons through the boxes), and also on the use of an appropriate cutoff. By the moment, only small RS maps (around 2×2) have been obtained with this technique. We justify that our ray-tracing procedure is also appropriate in the case of large simulation cubes (∼ 1000 Mpc per edge), where high enough resol…

Logarithmic finite-size effects on interfacial free energies: Phenomenological theory and Monte Carlo studies

2014

The computation of interfacial free energies between coexisting phases (e.g.~saturated vapor and liquid) by computer simulation methods is still a challenging problem due to the difficulty of an atomistic identification of an interface, and due to interfacial fluctuations on all length scales. The approach to estimate the interfacial tension from the free energy excess of a system with interfaces relative to corresponding single-phase systems does not suffer from the first problem but still suffers from the latter. Considering $d$-dimensional systems with interfacial area $L^{d-1}$ and linear dimension $L_z$ in the direction perpendicular to the interface, it is argued that the interfacial …

Spiral conical approximations to double reflection Wolter optics

2008

The design of a grazing incidence focusing optic obtained from a spiral approximation to multiple nested cones produces an annular image of a point source. The angular size of the annulus depends mainly on the pitch of the winding and the focal length. For a spiral conical approximation to Wolter optics, the effect is magnified by the double reflection. However, if the two conical spirals are wound one clock-wise and the other counter-clock-wise, then the aberration is partially compensated. We use a ray tracing code to evaluate advantages and disadvantages of this optical design for potential applications of a light weight optics technology based on plastic foils that we are currently inve…

Designing an x-ray baffle for stray-light reduction at the focal plane of the Wide Field Imager on board EDGE

2008

We exploited a ray-tracing Montecarlo code to investigate the effects of stray-light on the performances of the Wide Field Imager (FoV = 1.5 deg) on board the EDGE satellite. We found non negligible stray-light contamination up to ~ 8 deg off-axis angles. We discuss the benefits of a baffle in order to reduce this contamination, that would strongly affect the telescope sensitivity, and present two possible baffle designs based on results of simulations.

Imaging Performance of a Diffractive Corneal Inlay for Presbyopia in a Model Eye

2019

[EN] In this work we evaluated the imaging properties of the Diffractive Corneal Inlay (DCI), a novel type of corneal implant working by diffraction that we proposed for the treatment of presbyopia. ZEMAX OpticStudio software was employed for the numerical assessment, with simulations performed in a human-based eye model. In the ray tracing analysis, we used the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), the Area under the MTF (AMTF), and the Point Spread Function (PSF). The theoretical performance of the DCI under different situations was evaluated in comparison with a commercially available pinhole based corneal inlay. Finally, real images were obtained experimentally in vitro in a model eye wit…

A Collective Coordinate to Obtain Free Energy Profiles for Complex Reactions in Condensed Phases.

2015

Exploration of chemical reactions in complex explicit environments has become an affordable task with the use of hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics potentials which allow calculating free energy profiles of chemical reactions under the influence of the surroundings. Tracing these free energy profiles requires the selection of a reaction coordinate, which can be cumbersome for those processes involving more than a single chemical event in a concerted step. We here propose a collective coordinate to be used in the calculation of free energy profiles for complex reactions in condensed phases. This coordinate is based in the definition of the advance along a path introduced by Brandua…

Coverage analysis of RFID indoor localization system for refrigerated warehouse based on 2-D Ray tracing

2010

Due to the ever increasing diffusion of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) in logistic processes, the localization of the tags in the environment is becoming an important feature for many RFID-based inventory management systems. RFID-based Location system will allow offering value-added services logistics operators, and RFID tags can be used for more than just labeling items. This paper proposes a Received Signal Strength (RSS) based positioning system for perishable products equipped with active UHF RFID tags inside a refrigerated warehouse (4C°). The major performance metrics of interest for indoor positioning systems are the accuracy and the precision in estimating signal strength wit…

Pooling of Nasopharyngeal Swab Specimens for SARS-CoV-2 detection by RT-PCR

2020

ABSTRACTSystematic testing of large population groups by RT-PCR is mandatory to Covid-19 case identification and contact tracing in order to minimize the likelyhood of resurgence in contagion. Sample pooling for RT-PCR has been effectively used to detect community transmission of SARS CoV-2. Nevertheless, this procedure may decrease the sensitivity of RT-PCR assays due to specimen dilution. We evaluated the efficacy of this strategy for diagnosis of Covid-19 using a sensitive commercially-available RT-PCR targeting SARS CoV-2 E and RdRp genes in a single reaction. A total of 20 mini-pools containing either 5 (n=10) or 10 (n=10) nasopharyngeal exudates collected in universal transport medium…

SALUTE E SICUREZZA NEI LUOGHI DI LAVORO: LE RISPOSTE INTEGRATE DEGLI ORDINAMENTI STATALE E INTERSINDACALE

2020

The essay focuses on the recent measures undertaken by social partners against Covid-19 in the field …
