Evolutionary history of treecreeper vocalisations (Aves: Certhia)☆

2008

AbstractSince the vocalisations of passerine birds are in general a good means to separate taxa when external morphological differences are few, song and call recordings of 33 treecreeper (Certhia) taxa were sonagraphed and their parameters analysed. The vocalisations show low intra-individual and intra-population variation. Phylogenetic evolutionary units at the population level were delimited by time, frequency and syntax parameters by means of principal-component and discriminant analyses. Traits of territorial song were traced on a phylogenetic tree based on cytochrome b sequences, and a mean acoustic character difference was calculated. All presently recognised nine species could be di…

Latest developments in rock art recording: towards an integral documentation of Levantine rock art sites combining 2D and 3D recording techniques

2013

This paper presents a further step in the integral documentation of prehistoric rock art, combining 2D and 3D digital recording techniques. Image processing and digital enhancement techniques are an invaluable aid to obtain high quality and accurate 2D recordings, especially when working with faint motifs or complex superimpositions. But what constitutes a real breakthrough is the possibility of combining 2D digital tracings with metric 3D models, providing a whole set of metric outputs that improve our understanding of the motifs in their context and, at the same time, can be used to deliver accurate metric reproductions. The Levantine rock art at Cingle de la Mola Remigia (Ares del Maestr…

Modeling Vestibular Compensation: Neural Plasticity Upon Thalamic Lesion.

2020

The present study in rats was conducted to identify brain regions affected by the interruption of vestibular transmission and to explore selected aspects of their functional connections. We analyzed, by positron emission tomography (PET), the regional cerebral glucose metabolism (rCGM) of cortical, and subcortical cerebral regions processing vestibular signals after an experimental lesion of the left laterodorsal thalamic nucleus, a relay station for vestibular input en route to the cortical circuitry. PET scans upon galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) were conducted in each animal prior to lesion and at post-lesion days (PLD) 1, 3, 7, and 20, and voxel-wise statistical analysis of rCGM a…

Theoretical and experimental analysis of photonic structures for fluorescent concentrators with increased efficiencies

2008

In this study we present a theoretical and experimental analy- sis of the application of photonic band stop filters on top of photovoltaic fluorescent concentrators in order to increase the photon collection efficiency. The light guiding effect of the fluorescent concentrator relies on total internal reflection. The escape cone of total internal reflection is their major loss mechanism. Our ray tracing simulation allows to calculate the beneficial effect of photonic band stop reflection filters, which reduce these losses, and to simulate the angular distribu- tion of the light trapped in the concentrator. We present simula- tions of the optical properties of 1D and 3D photonic structures an…

Some tests of 3D ultrasonic traveltime tomography on the Eleonora d'Aragona statue (F. Laurana, 1468)

2013

Abstract The use of a non-destructive technique in situ can be a valuable diagnostic tool to support verification of restoration, as well as a monitoring technique in works of art or historical monuments. We present a high resolution 3D ultrasonic tomography to one of the most important statues of the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Abatellis of Palermo, the bust of Eleonora d'Aragona by F. Laurana (1430–1502). This technique allowed to study the structural continuity of the material of the marble. Some tests have been carried out to optimize inversion parameters, such as voxel size and to choose between straight and curved rays. We propose to calculate a minimum lateral resolution using the sa…

Higher-order Hamilton–Jacobi perturbation theory for anisotropic heterogeneous media: dynamic ray tracing in Cartesian coordinates

2018

With a Hamilton–Jacobi equation in Cartesian coordinates as a starting point, it is common to use a system of ordinary differential equations describing the continuation of first-order derivatives of phase-space perturbations along a reference ray. Such derivatives can be exploited for calculating geometrical spreading on the reference ray and for establishing a framework for second-order extrapolation of traveltime to points outside the reference ray. The continuation of first-order derivatives of phase-space perturbations has historically been referred to as dynamic ray tracing. The reason for this is its importance in the process of calculating amplitudes along the reference ray. We exte…

Extended Poster Abstract: Open Source Solution for Massive Map Sheet Georeferencing Tasks for Digital Archiving

2010

Scanned maps need to be georeferenced, to be useful in a GIS environment for data extraction (vectorization), web publishing or spatially-aware archiving. Widely used software solutions with georeferencing functionality are designed to suit a universal scenario for georeferencing many different kinds of data sources. Such general nature also makes them very time-consuming for georeferencing a large number of map sheets to a known grid. This work presents an alternative scenario for georeferencing large numbers of map sheets in a time-efficient manner and implements the approach as the MapSheetAutoGeoRef plug-in for the freely available open source Quantum GIS [1].

Ray matrix analysis of anamorphic fractional Fourier systems

2006

In this work we extend the application of the ray matrix approach to analyse anamorphic fractional Fourier systems, i.e., fractional Fourier optical systems where the fractional power is different for two orthogonal directions. The application of the ray matrix approach allows for easily obtaining the properties of the optical system, and it is therefore a powerful tool to design and simplify complicated systems. For simplicity we consider fractional Fourier systems with real orders and systems without apertures. We start by presenting the analysis of some previously reported anamorphic Fourier and fractional Fourier systems, and we end by proposing a simple optical system with tunable anam…
