The relationships between school belonging and students’ motivational, social-emotional, behavioural, and academic outcomes in secondary education: a…

2019

This meta-analytic review examines the relationships between students' sense of school belonging and students' motivational, social-emotional, behavioural, and academic functioning in secondary education. Moreover, it examines to what extent these relationships differ between different student groups (grade level, SES), measurement instruments, and region. The meta-analysis included 82 correlational studies, published in peer-reviewed journals between 2000 and 2018. Results revealed, on average, a small positive correlation with academic achievement, and small to moderate positive correlations with motivational outcomes such as mastery goal orientations; with social-emotional outcomes such …

Automated approach for indirect immunofluorescence images classification based on unsupervised clustering method

2018

Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are a collection of many complex disorders of unknown aetiology resulting in immune responses to self-antigens and are thought to result from interactions between genetic and environmental factors. ADs collectively are amongst the most prevalent diseases in the U.S., affecting at least 7% of the population. The diagnosis of ADs is very complex, the standard screening methods provides seeking and recognizing of Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA) by Indirect ImmunoFluorescence (IIF) based on HEp-2 cells. In this paper an automatic system able to identify and classify the Centromere pattern is presented. The method is based on the grouping of centromeres present on the cell…

Identical fits of nonnegative matrix/tensor factorization may correspond to different extracted event-related potentials

2010

Nonnegative Matrix / Tensor factorization (NMF/NTF) have been used in the study of EEG, and the fit (explained variation) is often used to evaluate the performance of a nonnegative decomposition algorithm. However, this parameter only reveals the information derived from the mathematical model and just exhibits the reliability of the algorithms, and the property of EEG can not be reflected. If fits of two algorithms are identical, it is necessary to examine whether the desired components extracted by them are identical too. In order to verify this doubt, we performed NMF and NTF on the same dataset of an auditory event-related potentials (ERPs), and found that the identical fits of NMF and …

Recognition of Cardiac Arrhythmia by Means of Beat Clustering on ECG-Holter Recordings

2012

The follow-up of some cardiac diseases may be achieved by ECG-holter record analysis. A heartbeat clustering method can be used to reduce the usually high computational cost of such Holter analysis. This study describes a method aimed at cardiac arrhythmia recognition based on this approach, by means of unsupervised inspection of morphologically similar heartbeat groups. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is used as the feature selection method since the complexity increases exponentially with the number of features. A modification of the k-means algorithm was developed for centroid computation, taking into account heartbeat length changes. Experimental set consisted of ECG records from the…

A Bottleneck Model of Imaging Systems for Digital Angiocardiography

1988

Some ten years ago, the performance of real-time digital subtraction angiocardiography was demonstrated for the first time [1]. Subtraction became in the years after 1980 nearly synonymous with digital angiography [2–4]. This image enhancement technique was certainly very efficient in paving the way for the digital approach to imaging. Relatively simple processors and memory structures could perform subtraction methods with some degree of success. However, even in that early stage, it was clear to many of those involved in the technical developments and in early clinical evaluations that subtraction was only one of many features that would motivate the change from traditional film technique…

Concentric force enhancement during human movement

2001

In order to understand the possible mechanisms contributing to enhanced concentric performance in stretch-shortening cycle exercises in vivo the present study examined knee extension torque, electromyogram (EMG) activity and fascicle length of the vastus lateralis muscle in maximal and submaximal human movements. Maximal concentric knee extensions (120 degrees s(-1)) were done after pre-stretch and pre-isometric conditions by nine volunteers. During shortening at the knee angle of 115 degrees (180 degrees = extended) the knee extension torque was found to be greater in pre-stretch condition (272 vs. 248 N m, P < 0.05) although the torque level prior to shortening was smaller than in pre-iso…

Histological findings of osteonecrosis spotted prior to tooth extractions. Should we consider tooth extraction still the main trigger event?

2021

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is an adverse drug reaction described as the progressive destruction and death of bone that affects the mandible and maxilla of patients exposed to the treatment with medications known to increase the risk of disease, in the absence of a previous radiation treatment. Tooth extraction often precedes the manifestation of ONJ; indeed, it is sometimes called trigger event and it have also been considered as risk factors for the onset of ONJ. As a consequence, some of the guidelines recommend avoiding tooth extractions in patients at risk of ONJ; however, a growing body of evidence indicates that dental/periodontal infection prior to extraction, rather than dental …

Comparison of the contractile effects of endothelin-1 and sarafotoxin S6b in goat isolated cerebral arteries

1992

1. The effects of endothelium-derived endothelin-1 and snake venom-derived sarafotoxin S6b, peptides with striking structural and functional similarities, were examined and compared in isolated middle cerebral arteries of goats. 2. Endothelin-1 and sarafotoxin S6b contracted cerebral arteries in a concentration-dependent manner. The potency of endothelin-1 (EC50 = 4.9 (3.9-6.2) x 10(-10) M) was about ten times higher than that of sarafotoxin S6b (EC50 = 5.5 (4.4-6.9) x 10(-9) M). The tension returned to basal values after repeated washings and contraction with endothelin-1 could be reproduced. Endothelin-1 and sarafotoxin S6b induced further contraction in arteries precontracted with prosta…

Characterization of adenosine receptors in guinea-pig isolated left atria

1989

1. The effects of purinergic stimulation on action potential, force of contraction, 86Rb efflux and 45Ca uptake were investigated in guinea-pig left atria. 2. Adenosine exerted a negative inotropic effect which was antagonized by adenosine deaminase but enhanced by dipyridamole. 3. The negative inotropic effect of adenosine was mimicked by 5'-(N-ethyl)-carboxamido-adenosine (NECA) and the isomers of N6-(phenyl-isopropyl)-adenosine, R-PIA and S-PIA. NECA and R-PIA were about 100 times more potent than adenosine, whereas R-PIA was about 100 times more potent than S-PIA. 4. The inotropic effects of adenosine (in the presence of dipyridamole), NECA, R-PIA and S-PIA were competitively antagonize…

Concentric and/or Eccentric Training-Induced Alterations in Shoulder Flexor and Extensor Strength

1997

To examine the effect of specific concentric and eccentric training on muscular strength following an initial standardized period of excessive training, shoulder extensors and flexors were tested. The shoulder is a joint particularly susceptible to injury and requires a specific strength training program. For a period of 12 weeks, subjects performed training, including concentric and eccentric actions. Thereafter, they were divided into three groups that performed specific 12-week programs, including either concentric (C-E/C), eccentric (C-E/E), or a combination of both concentric and eccentric exercises (C-E/C-E). Following the initial period of training, significant increases (p0.05) in p…
