A special issue, “Remembering the Past and the Future - Korean Culture in a Changing World,” is devoted to understanding Korean culture. Regardless of the bulk of comprehensive information available today, accurate knowledge of the Asian culture in Europe or the European culture in Asia has not become considerably deeper. Sometimes even to the contrary – the old stereotypes continue to exist as part of the packaging for pseudo information adjusted to the short-term goals of the contemporary globalised society, supplemented by travel guides and announcements tailored to the needs of immediate politically economic conjuncture. And yet, this is only the top of the intercultural communication i…
L'albero di Persefone. Una nota introduttiva
2022
2015
The cultural context of the Madonie — a hilly and mountainous territory near Palermo with about 60,000 inhabitants distributed in 22 little villages, some of which overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea — results from the influence of three external areas (those surrounding three of the most important towns in Sicily: Palermo, Caltanissetta, and Messina). The most relevant effect of such a complex multidirectional influence is the presence of three different micro-areas, each marked by different linguistic and cultural peculiarities. Since a situation of complex and “ordered” ethnolinguistic variability may be observed in the Madonie, the area and its micro-areas are currently investigated in a resear…

FILOLOGIA GERMANICA – GERMANIC PHILOLOGY Supplemento 2 - 2021. Incantesimi e formule magiche nella tradizione manoscritta germanica medievale / Charm…
2021
The volume collects contributions devoted to charms and magical formulas of the medieval Germanic tradition, studied in the light of the relationship with the manuscript context that handed them down and the historical-cultural milieu of which they are produced. The approach to charms and magical formulas of the Germanic world has developed on an evolutionary path that has from time to time favoured perspectives of different scientific categories, and has been faced on philological, linguistic, semantic-pragmatic, semiotic and historical-literary basis. The essays gathered in the volume offer different examples – but at the same time linked by some themes and a common purpose – of the magic…

Elderly Parents’ Need for Help and Adult Children's Moving Decisions
2015
Recent changes in Finnish welfare policies have increased the need for family involvement in eldercare. This article uses qualitative interviews to study working adult daughters’ reasons for moving in with their parent(s). Coresidence was linked to the parents’ need for support, but also to the daughters’ life situations, family histories, the availability of welfare services, and cultural norms and values. The interviewees used the “familist” and “independent life” discourses in their speech. The familist discourse was used to argue for coresidence as a natural continuation of family traditions and life history, whereas the independent life discourse was used to legitimize the need for alt…

Indigenous Research and Romantic Nationalism
2016
In recent years, “indigenous research” and “indigenous methods” have become prominent themes in the general field of qualitative methodology. These ideas and their implications raise serious questions for the wider conduct of social research. We will outline some of those ideas, subjecting them to scrutiny, and ultimately using them to question the rise of Romanticism in contemporary social methodology. We develop these ideas to question the contemporary emphasis on the personal and the experiential in current methodological commentary.
