Vulnerability to Forced Labour and Trafficking: The case of Romanian women in the agricultural sector in Sicily
2015
This paper focuses on labour and sexual exploitation faced by Romanian female workers employed in the agricultural sector in Ragusa, Sicily, Italy. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in 2013 and 2014 with Romanian female farm workers in Ragusa, the paper identifies factors that contribute towards their vulnerability to exploitation. By paying specific attention to the experiences of women who are mothers with dependent children, we look at structural factors that increase their vulnerability and consider how this vulnerability ‘forces’ women into situations whereby they effectively accept and/or submit to abuse. We also highlight how European Union (EU) citizenship does not automatically protec…

Looking for the "Vulnerable Subject": The Mencian Account of the Person
2019
The idea of the legal subject as an autonomous agent, with the capacity to choose and freely determine herself without external constraints or interference, complete in herself and independent, has had remarkable normative implications in structuring contemporary legal systems. The philosopher Martha Fineman recently argued against this notion, proposing the alternative one of “vulnerable subject.” This paper suggests that the notion of the person elaborated by the classical Confucian thinkers encompasses the “vulnerable subject.” The Confucian theorizations resonate with the ethic of care; however, their moral and normative relevance carries the potential for a broader scope of application…
The Slave Coasts. Transnational Sexual Exploitation from Nigeria to Italy. From human trafficking to human rights
2019
This research intends to open a global debate on the current strong link between migration and prostitution on the basis of the reality observed in Palermo in the timespan 2015-2017. The main three elements emerging from the analysis are criminality, poverty and exploitation. As data suggests, Italy is the favorite destination of the Nigerian sexual exploitation market. In particular, Sicily plays a major role in the sexual exploitation ring involving Nigerian migrants, besides headquartering the Italian as well the Nigerian mafia. The agreement between Cosa Nostra (Sicilian Mafia) and the two organizations known as Black Axe and Eye (Nigerian mafia) represents the starting point for sexual…
La tutela della vulnerabilità in ambito giuridico. Rilevanza del concetto nel contesto della tratta e del traffico di persone migranti
2022
The legal system started to use the word “vulnerability” to provide protection in cases of abuse or need. Understanding the double face of vulnerability, as both universal and individual, may lead us to overcome the traditional liberal paradigm and its idea of indi-viduals independent and autonomous, and finally embrace an idea of legal subject based on his inherent vulnerability. The differences between these paradigms are evident in the fields of migration and human trafficking. This paper proposes to rethink the approach to migration starting from vulnerability.

Droghe leggere e criminalità organizzata: una relazione problematica
2022
Factor VIIa-induced interaction with integrin controls the release of tissue factor on extracellular vesicles from endothelial cells.
2019
Essentials Prothrombotic extracellular vesicles (EV) carry agonist pathway-specific proteomes Agonists for protease activated receptor (PAR) 2 signaling have distinct effects on EV composition PAR2 signaling rapidly generates prothrombotic EV and slowly EV with inactive tissue factor (TF) FVIIa integrin ligation restricts TF incorporation into EV from endothelial cells SUMMARY: Background Cell injury signal-induced activation and release of tissue factor (TF) on extracellular vesicles (EVs) from immune and vessel wall cells propagate local and systemic coagulation initiation. TF trafficking and release on EVs occurs in concert with the release of cell adhesion receptors, including integrin …
