Die Verwandlung der senecanischen Tragödie in Marc-Antoine Murets “Julius Caesar” und Jacques Grévins “César”

1994

In 1547 Marc-Antoine Muret wroteJulius Caesar, the first tragedy by a French author with an exclusively historical plot. While imitating the dramatic structure of Seneca's tragedies, he fundamentally changed the nature of the tragic conflict, transferring it from the character of the tragic hero to the clash of two basically positive principles, monarchy and Republican liberty. Muret's Caesar does not plan a revengeful crime as the Senecan heroes did; he is rather the successful statesman, ready to die after having won the victory over the entire world, and his apotheosis is soon fulfilled by the gods. On the other side are the Republican heroes Brutus and Cassius who succeed in killing the…

Castron kastraatio : Pedro Juan Gutiérrezin proosa castrokommunistisen utopian romuttajana

2016

This dissertation explores how Pedro Juan Gutiérrez's fiction corresponds to the Castrocommunist utopia. The study has three goals: (1) to explain how Castro-communism has formed, altered and impacted on Cuban literature; (2) to investigate how Gutiérrez's fiction corresponds to the Castro-communist utopia and ideals; and (3) how his parodic (anti)detective story Nuestro GG en La Habana (2004) is based on and relates to Cuban socialist detective stories, Graham Greene's spy farce Our Man in Havana, Castro-communist historiography and the social, ideological and economic shifts in Cuban society during the 1990s. Previous studies on Gutiérrez's fiction have focused almost exclusively on the a…

MADNESS AND BESTIALIZATION IN EURIPIDES'HERACLES

2013

Against a background of anxious evocation of Dionysiac rites, Euripides'Heraclesstages the extreme degradation of the tragic hero who, as a consequence of the hatred of a divinity, loses his heroic traits and above all his human ones in the exercise of brutal violence. By comparing Heracles in the grip of madness to a furious bull assailing its prey, the tragedian clearly shows the inexorability of the divine will and its arbitrariness, and emphasizes madness itself through images traditionally associated with the bull. However, the reference to monstrosity and animals does not only involve Heracles, but also concerns the representation of Lyssa, the demon of madness sent by Hera to induce …

"Lato" Tadeusza Rittnera. "Ostatnie dni starej Europy" i nowoczesny teatr uczuć

2021

This is a reassessment of the work of Tadeusz Rittner, a bilingual Polish/German writer and dramatist from Galicia who won much acclaim in the early decades of the last century. This article examines his narrative and dramatic strategies by focusing on his drama Lato (Summer), published in 1913. It is a story about a timid young man who, after hearing from his doctor that he will not live much longer, turns suddenly into a bold and shameless seducer. This could be the stuff of a conventional, farcical exposure of middle class hypocrisy, yet in Rittner’s drama it becomes a fascinating study, never far from Czekhov and Witkacy, tapping all the resources of realism, irony and grotesque to show…

Postemanzipatorischer Antisemitismus in Wien. Ferdinand Wilhelm Bronners Komödie "Schmelz, der Nibelunge"

2020

Ferdinand Wilhelm Bronners "Schmelz, der Nibelunge" comedy (1905) reflects anti-Semitism and anti-Slavism in Vienna around 1900. The main character suffers painfully from the inner conflict between her German-national identification and her Jewish descent. The author of the comedy converted to Protestntism and denied all his life his Jewish heritage. The aim is to clarify whether the Galician Jew and writer Ferdinand Bronner offers on stage a solution to the Jewish question that transcends racial anti-Semitism and Zionism beyond the seemingly opposite tendencies in time.

‘Roma in costume amazzonico’.
