Endoscopic Treatment of Transesophageal Echocardiography-Induced Esophageal Perforation
2018
Perforation of the esophagus is the most severe complication of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and can lead to mediastinitis, pleural empyema, or peritonitis. Currently, the majority of patients receive operative treatment with only 6% treated endoscopically. We report our experience with endoscopic and conservative approaches. We retrospectively reviewed all patients treated for esophageal perforation and included all patients with perforation caused by TEE. All patients with perforation of the esophagus by TEE probe underwent conservative or endoscopic treatment, drainage of pleural and mediastinal retentions, and adjusted to antibiotic therapy. From January 2004 to December 2014 a …
Chimney and periscope grafts to facilitate endovascular treatment of aortic transection in a patient with aberrant right subclavian artery
2014
Purpose: To report the use of parallel grafts to extend the proximal landing zone for stentgraft repair of aortic transection involving an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA). Case Report: A 28-year-old patient was referred for treatment of traumatic aortic transection with contained rupture at the level of an ARSA. Immediate thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) was planned because of hemodynamic instability. To achieve rapid sealing and maintain perfusion to both subclavian arteries, a chimney stent to the left subclavian artery (LSA) and a periscope stent-graft to the ARSA were deployed successfully. After surgical repair of all fractures, the patient was discharged 1 month aft…

Organo-catalyzed synthesis of aliphatic polycarbonates in solvent-free conditions
2012
A new efficient and expeditious route to the synthesis of aliphatic polycarbonates, in solvent-free conditions and using 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-2-carboxylate (BMIM-2-CO2) as a catalyst precursor, is described. The protocol consists of a two-step polymerization process involving the transesterification of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) with linear alkane diols and leading to high molecular weight homopolymers. The reaction went to completion quantitatively with the liberation of methanol as the only by-product. The in situ formation of N-heterocyclic carbene species resulting from BMIM-2-CO2 decarboxylation is suggested to be a key feature of the condensation process. The protocol was then …
Variation in the Senecio aethnensis group (Asteraceae) along an altitudinal gradient
2003
ABSTRACT The variability of the Senecio aethnensis group was investigated through morphometric analyses of seven populations along an altitudinal transect on Mt. Etna (E Sicily). The data obtained show a separation into two groups, one including the populations of the upper and middle belts, at and above 1700 m, the other including the populations from lower altitudes. In the first group a clinal morphological variation in several reproductive and vegetative characters was observed in relation to altitude. The analysis of leaf characters in progeny cultivated under uniform conditions confirmed the differentiation into the two groups, which are to be treated as separate species, i.e. S. aeth…
Amphibians of the Kayan Mentarang National Park (East Kalimantan, Indonesia): estimating overall and local species richness
2004
On the basis of surveys since 1997 and an intensive survey at the World Wildlife Fund field station at Lalut Birai in 2001, we assessed the importance of the Kayan Mentarang National Park in East Kalimantan for the conservation of Borneo's amphibian fauna. Sixty-five frog species and one Caecilian species are currently known to occur in this region. We report their occurrence in 16 subareas. Most of the species were recorded at Upper Bahau (41) and at the Lalut Birai field station (33). Based on the results of opportunistic searches and transect censuses at Lalut Birai, we argue that the amphibian diversity of the national park is still greatly underestimated.
Populations of breeding birds in Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands
2013
Data about breeding populations of birds in the Antarctica are rare and fragmented. Thus, information about the status of the breeding populations of Antarctic birds is crucial given the current scenario of climate change, which is particularly acute in Antarctica. This paper presents new information about the populations of the Antarctic tern Sterna vittata, the kelp gull Larus dominicanus, the southern giant petrel Macronectes giganteus, the Antarctic skua Catharacta antarctica lonnbergi, the chinstrap penguin Pygoscelis antarctica and the gentoo penguin Pygoscelis papua on Byers Peninsula (Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands). We used line transects counts to estimate both densitie…
Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) for the treatment of aortic diseases: a position statement from the European Association for Cardio-Thora…
2012
Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is an emerging treatment modality, which has been rapidly embraced by clinicians treating thoracic aortic disease.1–4 Fundamentally, it is a far less invasive approach than open surgery and its availability and relative ease of application has changed and extended management options in thoracic aortic disease, including in those patients deemed unfit or unsuitable for open surgery. In the operating room, this requires considerable perceptual, cognitive and psychomotor demands on the operators. The dramatic expansion of TEVAR activity has necessarily prompted a requirement to systematically consider the indications, appropriateness, limitations and…
Use of transoesophageal echocardiography in the diagnosis of abscess in infective endocarditis
1995
Transoesophageal echocardiography is invaluable clinically since it accurately images abscess cavities or aneurysms. It provides the information about the site and extension of abscesses which is needed by surgeons to time and define surgical intervention. Early diagnosis is advantageous, and abscesses should be expected in 5%-30% of patients with echocardiographically discernible vegetations. Since there is no 'abscess typical' organism, transoesophageal echocardiographic examination is helpful at the first indication of infective endocarditis, to identify high-risk patients. Involvement of the aortic valve, growth in the size of vegetations, and the presence of spontaneous echo contrast a…
Characterisation of humic substances by acid catalysed transesterification
2002
Abstract The chemical composition of low molecular weight moieties linked to the core structures of humic substances (HS) are of substantial importance for the understanding of the chemical structures and mode of interactions of HS with other substances in the environment. In this study a novel approach to characterise certain low molecular weight compounds bound to HS is suggested. The method includes transesterification (TE) of ester and amide bound structures, and esterification (E) of free carboxylic groups using acid catalysed methanolysis followed by gas chromatography (GC)–mass spectrometry (MS) and GC-FID analysis. Methanolysis of five HS of different origin, demonstrated the presen…
