Flat-top ultra-wideband photonic filters based on mutual coherence function synthesis

2008

A novel all-incoherent optical circuit that allows for band-pass microwave-photonic filter design is presented and verified through numerical simulation. In contrast to conventional spectrum-sliced optical architectures that operate on the basis of a finite number of discrete taps, our proposal is based on arbitrary shaping of the spectrum of the broadband optical source in a conventional frequency encoder. This fact dramatically increases the free spectral range of the filter with respect to the conventional discrete-time optical processing. The filter transfer function is given by the mutual coherence function of the filtered source which allows, through an inverse problem, sculpting the …

Spatial and short-term temporal variations in runoff, soil aggregation and other soil properties along a Mediterranean Climatological Gradient.

1998

Abstract Physical and chemical soil properties were measured along a mountainous climatological gradient in the province of Alicante (Spain). The objective was to evaluate how the climate affects certain soil properties at different temporal and spatial scales. These properties include infiltration, runoff and sediment concentrations resulting from rainfall simulation experiments performed in winter and in summer. Chemical soil properties like carbonate content, organic matter content and CEC were analysed in reference soil profiles along the gradient. Physical soil properties like soil moisture content, macroaggregation and waterstable microaggregation were measured at monthly intervals du…

A Novel Wideband MIMO Car-to-Car Channel Model Based on a Geometrical Semi-Circular Tunnel Scattering Model

2016

In this paper, we present a wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) car-to-car (C2C) channel model based on a geometrical semi-circular tunnel (SCT) scattering model. From the geometrical SCT scattering model, a reference channel model is derived under the assumption of single-bounce scattering in line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) propagation environments. In the proposed reference channel model, it is assumed that an infinite number of scatterers are randomly distributed on the tunnel wall. Starting from the geometrical scattering model, the time-variant transfer function (TVTF) is derived, and its correlation properties in time, frequency, and space are studied. Expressions ar…

Second-order hydrodynamic effects on the response of three semisubmersible floating offshore wind turbines

2020

Abstract Floating structures have become the most feasible solution for supporting wind turbines when offshore wind project move to deeper water. In this paper, a hydrodynamic analysis of three different semisubmersible floating offshore wind turbines is carried out including second-order hydrodynamic effects. The three examined platforms are V-shaped semisubmersible, Braceless semisubmersible and OC4-DeepCwind semisubmersible and are used to support the NREL 5 MW reference wind turbine. The main objective of the present study is to investigate and compare the hydrodynamic response of the three different semisubmersible floaters in two water depths (100 m, and 200 m) under different load co…

Speed control design for a vehicle system using fuzzy logic and PID controller

2015

This paper consists of designing fuzzy and PID controllers for controlling the vehicle speed. The dynamic of the system is modeled to provide a transfer function for the plant. Fuzzy and PID controller are designed for linear model. The external disturbances such road grade is considered to stabilizing the system. Both controllers are modeled using MATLAB Simulink software. Finally, a comparative assessment of each simulated result is done based on the response characteristics.

Influence of the type of illumination on the measurement of the modulation transfer function in the living human eye: A theoretical study

1999

Abstract Applications such as refractive surgery demand an objective appraisal of the retinal image quality. The modulation transfer function (MTF) provides that information when measured directly. Moreover, the MTF obtained using a simple and objective method such as that described in this paper allows the neural contrast sensitivity function (CSF) to be obtained from the global CSF and the MTF. When calculating the MTF it must be borne in mind whether the applicable theory is coherent or incoherent. In the literature, the developed theory presents some approximations and incongruities. Also, it is interesting to note that the method of recording the MTF (short or long time of integration,…

On the reliability of ASHRAE conduction transfer function coefficients of walls

2000

The transfer function method recommended by the ASHRAE can be considered the most modern tool currently available for the thermal analysis of a building. It is particularly well suited for use with a computer as it makes it possible to describe with great accuracy the internal heat gain of walls using a small set of coefficients. The present paper shows how to calculate sets of coefficients diverse from that proposed by Mitalas who first developed the method and on the basis of an unequivocal criterion, to prove the advantages in using them. The authors also investigated some of the paramount mathematical and physical aspects which affect the approximation degree of the ASHRAE method and, w…

In vitro optical quality comparison of 2 trifocal intraocular lenses and 1 progressive multifocal intraocular lens.

2015

Purpose To evaluate the optical quality of 3 multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs): the Mini Well Ready progressive multifocal aspheric IOL, the AT LISA trifocal diffractive IOL, and the Finevision full diffractive trifocal IOL. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods An instrument designed for measuring real-time modulation transfer function (MTF) and IOL power was used to measure the optical quality of each IOL for 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm apertures. This instrument measures both sagittal and tangential MTFs. The optical quality of each IOL was evaluated with the MTF, through-focus MTF, defocus tolerance, Strehl ratio MTF, and relative percentage of lig…

Transient seizure onset network for localization of epileptogenic zone: effective connectivity and graph theory-based analyses of ECoG data in tempor…

2018

Objective: Abnormal and dynamic epileptogenic networks cause difficulties for clinical epileptologists in the localization of the seizure onset zone (SOZ) and the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in preoperative assessments of patients with refractory epilepsy. The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of time-varying effective connectivity networks in various non-seizure and seizure periods, and to propose a quantitative approach for accurate localization of SOZ and EZ. Methods: We used electrocorticogram recordings in the temporal lobe and hippocampus from seven patients with temporal lobe epilepsy to characterize the effective connectivity dynamics at a high temporal resolution …

Note: Precise radial distribution of charged particles in a magnetic guiding field.

2015

Current high precision beta decay experiments of polarized neutrons, employing magnetic guiding fields in combination with position sensitive and energy dispersive detectors, resulted in a detailed study of the mono-energetic point spread function (PSF) for a homogeneous magnetic field. A PSF describes the radial probability distribution of mono-energetic electrons at the detector plane emitted from a point-like source. With regard to accuracy considerations, unwanted singularities occur as a function of the radial detector coordinate which have recently been investigated by subdividing the radial coordinate into small bins or employing analytical approximations. In this note, a series expa…
