Abstract Physical and chemical soil properties were measured along a mountainous climatological gradient in the province of Alicante (Spain). The objective was to evaluate how the climate affects certain soil properties at different temporal and spatial scales. Purpose: The optical quality of two types of multifocal, hybrid refractive-diffractive, intraocular lenses (IOL) is analyzed in vitro. Following the EN-ISO international standard, the IOLs’ modulation transfer functions (MTF) are determined for both distance and near vision. The behaviour of these curves when the pupil size varies is studied. Methods: The IOLs analyzed were: AcrySoft ResTor SN60D3 (Alcon) and Tecnis ZM900 (AMO). System identification via optimised wavelet-based neural networks

Nonlinear system identification by means of wavelet-based neural networks (WBNNs) is presented. An iterative method is proposed, based on a way of combining genetic algorithms (GAs) and least-square techniques with the aim of avoiding redundancy in the representation of the function. GAs are used for optimal selection of the structure of the WBNN and the parameters of the transfer function of its neurones. Least-square techniques are used to update the weights of the net. Ocular counterrolling (OCR) data taken from the literature (12 publications) were used to test the best fit (least-square fit) of these measurements with respect to three mathematical models: a sine relation between OCR and the lateral tilt stimulus, a complex cosine-square relation, and a logarithmic relation between OCR gain and tilt. The latter proved to be the best fitting function.
