Electrophysiological brainstem testing in the diagnosis of reversible brainstem ischemia.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of multimodal electrophysiological brainstem testing in the diagnosis of clinically suspected reversible ischemic deficits of the brainstem compared with diffusion weighted MR imaging. We investigated 158 consecutive patients presenting with signs of acute brainstem dysfunction. Serial electrophysiological brainstem tests including masseter reflex, blink reflex, masseter inhibitory reflex, AEP, MEP, EOG and the oculoauricular phenomenon were applied. Signatures of noise-enhanced stability in metastable state

The lifetime of a metastable state in the transient dynamics of an overdamped Brownian particle is analyzed, both in terms of the mean first passage time and by means of the mean growth rate coefficient. Both quantities feature non monotonic behaviors as a function of the noise intensity, and are independent signatures of the noise enhanced stability effect. They can therefore be alternatively used to evaluate and estimate the presence of this phenomenon, which characterizes metastability in nonlinear physical systems.

The paper reports on the optimization of a table-top nickel-like molybdenum transient collisionally excited soft x-ray laser (SXRL) at 18.9 nm, performed by double-pulse single beam grazing incidence pumping (DGRIP) [1]. This scheme allows for the first time the full control of the pump laser parameters including the pre-pulse duration, optimally generating the SXRL amplifier under grazing incidence. The single beam geometry of collinear double-pulse propagation guarantees the ideal overlap of the pre- and main pulse from shot to shot, resulting in a more efficient, highly stable SXRL output. We consider the instantaneous stiffness and damping of the vibro-impact in a backlash pair. Opposed to the existing and mostly used models of the backlash, we address the problem of contact and separation, and the associated force propagation within a mechanical pair, from a viewpoint of the vibro-impact dynamics.
