Nitrated Fatty Acids Modulate the Physical Properties of Model Membranes and the Structure of Transmembrane Proteins

Nitrated fatty acids (NO2 -FAs) act as anti-inflammatory signal mediators, albeit the molecular mechanisms behind NO2 -FAs' influence on diverse metabolic and signaling pathways in inflamed tissues are essentially elusive. Here, we combine fluorescence measurements with surface-specific sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy and coarse-grained computer simulations to demonstrate that NO2 -FAs alter lipid organization by accumulation at the membrane-water interface. As the function of membrane proteins strongly depends on both, protein structure as well as membrane properties, we consecutively follow the structural dynamics of an integral membrane protein in presence of NO2 -FAs. …

Multi-channel receptors based on thiopyrylium functionalised with macrocyclic receptors for the recognition of transition metal cations and anions.

We report herein the synthesis and characterization of a family of ligands containing different cation binding sites covalently connected to a thiopyrylium signalling reporter. The receptors L1–L6 are able to signal the presence of certain metal cations via three different channels; i.e. electrochemically, fluorogenically and chromogenically. An acetonitrile solution of L1–L6 shows a bright blue colour due to a charge-transfer band in the 575–585 nm region. The colour variation in acetonitrile of L1–L6 in the presence of the metal cations Ag+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ has been studied. Pd and PdAu on mesoporous silica for methane oxidation: Effect of SO2

Abstract Palladium and gold–palladium catalysts supported on mesoporous silica were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. They were characterized by XPS, XRD, BET, and FTIR acidity measurements. The activity was tested in the oxidation of methane under lean conditions. The effect of adding SO 2 to the reactant mixture was investigated. Test reactions were consecutively performed to evaluate the thermal stability and poisoning reversibility. The palladium catalyst performed quite well in terms of the light-off temperature ( T 50 300  °C) and SO 2 tolerance. Moreover, the activity, which decreased after a night treatment in SO 2 at 350 °C, was completely recovered in subsequent cycles. …

TAP reactor study of the deep oxidation of propane using cobalt oxide and gold-containing cobalt oxide catalysts

Abstract A transient reactor study of the oxidation of propane to CO 2 on gold-free and gold-doped CoO x catalysts has been carried out. It has been demonstrated that the presence of gold markedly promotes the catalytic reactivity of cobalt oxide in the total oxidation of propane. Both catalysts oxidised propane directly to CO 2 via a Mars–Van Krevelen mechanism, and this was confirmed using isotopically labelled oxygen experiments. The increased activity of the gold catalyst is related to the faster reoxidation of the cobalt oxide when gold is present in the catalyst, since the reaction step in which the catalyst is reduced, due to propane oxidation, is similar for both catalysts. Abstract The molecular crystal (KBr) 0.47 (KCN) 0.53 has been investigated by elastic neutron diffraction at the transition from the paraelastic to the orientational glass state. The freezing temperature is characterized by the onset of a momentum transfer dependent broadening of the diffraction lines indicating the transition from a crystalline to an amorphous state.

Pumice-Supported Nickel Catalysts

A series of nickel catalysts supported on pumice was prepared by precipitation and impregnation techniques. The influence of the calcination and reduction temperatures on the structural properties such as lattice parameters and particle dimensions of the oxide precursors and of the reduced catalysts was investigated by X-ray diffraction measurements. The effect of structural changes on the catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide has been evaluated. Determination of the Boron/Lead Ratio in Ceramic Materials Based on Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance

A method for quantitatively determining the relationship boron/lead in ceramic materials is presented. It is based on the attachment of microsamples of ceramic frits to an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). After a reductive deposition step in the � 0.25 to � 0.85 V (vs. AgCl/Ag) potential range, well-defined stripping peaks are recorded in 0.10 M NaCl plus 0.10 M mannitol. The deposition of boron and lead from suspensions of solid materials, and its subsequent oxidative dissolution can be monitorized at the EQCM. The effect of hydrogen on the molecular weight of polyethylene obtained over vanadium catalysts (based on VCl4 and VOCl3) supported on MgCl2(THF)2 was studied and the results were compared to those obtained for similar titanium catalysts. It was confirmed that the dependencies of the transfer reaction on the hydrogen concentration are a half-order in all investigated systems. However, the transition metal of the catalytic site affects the ratio of the transfer rate with hydrogen to the propagation rate (ktr,H/kp) and the results showed that hydrogen is a more effective agent of polyethylene molecular weight control in vanadium-based systems as compared to the titanium catalyst. © 2000 John …

X-ray Photoelectron-spectroscopy Investigation of Pumice-supported Nickel-catalysts

Pumice-supported nickel catalysts, prepared by the method of slow homogeneous precipitation with urea, were analysed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). By comparison with similarly prepared silica- and alumina-supported nickel catalysts, a preferential interaction of Ni2+ with Al3+ of the support has been determined. A quantitative XPS analysis indicated large segregation of nickel to the surface. The treatment with H2 at 673 K and 1073 K produced a partial reduction of Ni+2 to Ni0. The extent of the reduction was largest at 1073 K and in this case the reduced Ni in the metallic phase was detectable by x-ray diffraction. Deep oxidation of propane using palladium–titania catalysts modified by niobium

Abstract Pd/TiO 2 catalysts modified by niobium have been prepared and tested for the complete oxidation of propane. The catalysts have been characterised by BET, XRD, laser Raman spectroscopy, XPS, DRS and TPR. The incorporation of niobium into Pd/TiO 2 catalysts resulted in a marked increase in the catalytic activity compared to the Nb-free Pd/TiO 2 catalysts, and the activity increased as the niobium and/or palladium loading increased. The addition of Nb significantly modified the nature of the palladium and niobium species. There was a marked increase in the oxygen mobility after niobium addition.
