Surface characterisation of metal ions loaded TiO2 photocatalysts: structure–activity relationship

2004

Abstract Transition metal loaded TiO 2 powders were characterised and tested for the photodegradation of some organic acids. Both Lewis and Bronsted surface acid sites were present in the samples containing large amounts of Mo, V and W. The Bronsted sites are associated to the presence of the transition metals as they do not exist in the unloaded support, and in particular to the presence of these metals in high oxidation states. The trend of the pzc values of the various powders matches rather well both with the surface acidity of the samples experimentally determined by NH 3 adsorption and with a scale of acidity/basicity for bulk binary oxides. XPS investigation indicates that only the p…

Structural characterisation of silica supported CoMo catalysts by UV Raman spectroscopy, XPS and X-ray diffraction techniques

2002

The structure of Co-Mo catalysts supported on commercial silica, doped with various amounts of sodium ions, was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Two series of samples were considered. One series was prepared by classic incipient wet impregnation (WI) and the other series by co-impregnation in the presence of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA). The effect of sodium on the catalyst structure depended on the preparation procedure: in the case of the WI catalysts, sodium promoted the transformation of the polymolybdate species into monomolybdate Na2MoO4; in the case of the NTA prepared samples, sodium induced transforma…

Translational and rotational molecular motion in supercooled liquids studied by NMR and forced Rayleigh scattering

1994

It has been shown that translational diffusion coefficients, Dt, in the supercooled van der Waals liquids, orthoterphenyl, phenolphthaleindimethylether, and salol, have a weaker temperature dependence than the shear viscosity, η, at T ≲ 1.2Tg and can be described by Dt ∼ η−χ with χ < 1 whereas Dr ∼ η−1 applies for the mean rotational diffusion coefficients, Dr, down to the glass transition temperature, Tg. This apparent decoupling of translational and rotational motion has been discussed in relation with possible anomalous short time diffusion, spatial heterogeneity, and cooperative molecular motions close to Tg.

State-to-state vibrational and rotational energy transfer in CO2 gas from time-resolved raman-infrared double resonance experiments

1998

A time-resolved Raman–infrared double resonance technique was used to study collisional relaxation rates of vibrational and rotational energy levels in CO2 gas at 295 K. A pulsed Raman excitation populated a selected rovibrational initial state. Measurements of the rates of transfer from the pumped initial state into specific final states were carried out using time-resolved laser absorption spectroscopy. First, the transfer rates were determined for the five lower vibrational energy levels. In particular, it was confirmed that the rate of transfer between the two Fermi levels (1000) and (0200) is very small [(5.3±0.2)×104 Torr-1 s-1]. The rotational structure inside the (0200) vibrational …

Thermodynamics of the spin transition in [FexZn1−x(2-pic)3]Cl2 · EtOH

1992

Abstract With a new type of calorimeter we reinvestigated the specific heat Cp of the mixed crystals [FexZni1−x(2-pic)3]Cl2 · EtOH in the temperature range from 15 to 300 K. On the basis of a phenomenological thermodynamic model the anomaly in the Cp(T) curve of the mixed crystal (x = 0.73) can be quantitatively described as a result of the spin transition (1A1(low spin, LS) → 5T2(high spin, HS)). The parameters of the Gibbs free energy were independently derived from the temperature dependence of the HS fraction γ in [FexZn1−x(2-pic)3]Cl2 · EtOH. The pure iron complex (x = 1) exhibits a two-step spin transition. In the temperature range between the two steps the entropy obtained from the C…

Relationships between fatty acid monolayer structure on the subphase and on solid substrates

1991

Abstract Docosanoic acid monolayers with known molecular packings on the water surface have been deposited on thin polymer films and then investigated using transmission electron diffraction at normal and tilted incidence. The diffraction patterns from monolayers deposited under all conditions investigated could be indexed as arising from the same conformationally disordered centred rectangular packing with molecules standing perpendicular to the substrate, although with a spread of unit cell parameters within and between each deposition condition significantly greater than the experimental error. This packing has been seen in monolayers on the water surface, but only under conditions compl…

Synthesis, Structure, and Electrical Properties of Ta 4 FeTe 4

1995

Ta4FeTe4 has been synthesized and its structure determined by single-crystal X-ray methods. It crystallizes in the ortho-rhombic space group Pbam with Z = 4 and a = 10.514(5), b = 18.275(7), and c = 4.815(1) A. Ta4FeTe4 has a chain structure built up by Fe-centered Ta8-square antiprisms sharing common square faces. The resistivity of Ta4FeTe4 has been measured by a two-point method. Ta4FeTe4 shows metallic behavior. The structure of Ta4FeTe4 is discussed in relation to other early transition metal cluster compounds. A rational approach to the synthesis of related compounds is proposed.

Using theozymes for designing transition-state analogs for the intramolecular aldol reaction of δ-diketones

2001

Two theozymes for the intramolecular aldol reaction of δ-diketones have been studied using ab initio methods. The presence of both acid/base residues favors several steps of the aldol reaction. The appropriate positioning of these residues can accelerate one of two diastereromeric reaction pathways, the catalyzed aldol reaction being highly stereoselective. Analysis of the geometrical parameters, charge distribution, and the shape of molecular electrostatic potential for the corresponding acid/base catalyzed transition structure allows us to design adequate transition-state analogs to favor a reactive channel of this intramolecular aldol reaction. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Evaluation of adhesion forces for the manipulation of micro-objects in submerged environment through deposition of pH responsive polyelectrolyte laye…

2016

Optimization of surface treatment for reversible adhesion of micro-objects in liquid environment for the need in microassembly processes is presented. A spherical borosilicate probe and planar oxidized silicon wafer substrates were modified by deposition of pH sensitive polyelectrolyte films through layer-by-layer technique. Branched polyethylenimine (b-PEI) and poly(sodium styrenesulfonate) (PSS) were deposited in alternating manner on surfaces, and the influence of polyelectrolyte concentration, pH of deposition, and number of layers on the adhesion were successively examined. The multilayer buildup was followed by optical reflectometry (OR) and dissipative quartz crystal microbalance (QC…

Ionic transport and heat capacity of glass-forming metalnitrate mixtures

1997

Abstract Ionic transport of the glass-forming metalnitrate mixtures [Ca(NO 3 ) 2 ] 0.44 [KNO 3 ] 0.56 (MKN), and [Mg(NO 3 ) 2 ] 0.44 [NaNO 3 ] 0.56 (MNN) was investigated near the glass transition using broadband spectroscopy of the complex conductivity to 300 MHz. The real part of the conductivity exhibits a transition from frequency independent to power law behavior as found in most ionic conductors. At high frequencies the frequency exponent approaches unity and becomes larger at low temperatures. In the real part of the dielectric constant, a relaxation step could be observed in CRN. A detailed evaluation of the results within the modulus formalism is presented. The imaginary part of t…
