Translation or Transcreation? Discourses, Texts and Visuals
2018
Translation or Transcreation? Discourses, Texts and Visuals presents us with an apparent dilemma: is translation primarily a form of transfer or a form of creation? This dilemma harks back to a series of questions about the nature of creativity which are at the heart of Western philosophy and aesthetics: what distinguishes an original from a reproduction? What is original in every “translation” and what has already been translated in every “original”? While these questions have been theoretically debated in the past fifty years mainly in the contexts of French and American deconstruction, contemporary communication practices bring them back on the table with renewed urgency. The global flow…
How to blend language and ICT in the didactics of scientific translation.
2016
Este trabajo propone una aproximación desde la lingüística aplicada junto con la traducción ayudada por ordenador a la traducción de la ciencia y la tecnología. A partir de ahí hace una propuesta didáctica. New information and communication technologies (ICT) have burst into all spheres of our lives, modifying them in ways inconceivable barely 10 years ago. Generally speaking, these modifications have enhanced interaction processes (telecommunications), work and human production (task automation). The field of professional translation has been particularly affected by this technological revolution and has led to new research, professional and didactic paradigms, known as Automatic Translati…
Interdisciplinarity and languages: Current Issues in Research, Teaching, Professional Applications and ICT
2011
This volume offers a state-of-the-art view of research into interdisciplinarity, language and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) by providing an overview of teaching proposals within a university context. Interdisciplinarity is understood here as how language expresses the discourse and lexis of specialised knowledge in science, technology and the professions. Language helps in the creation of these different fields and constitutes a strategic tool that, if harnessed correctly, will facilitate competitiveness on an international level in order to boost technological, scientific, economic and educational growth. Interdisciplinarity, language and ICTs should be taken into account …
Translating with the Internet, Translating with Speechy Project
2011
The Speechy Project (SP henceforth) arose in the last autumn of 2009 with the aim of helping advanced students of English to make the most of the Internet. Since then, this website has been sieving the net in order to pick out the best online resources and classify them orderly into field-related lists. On this trend, several sieves have been performed onto different fields of the English Language. The one which this article is concerned with corresponds to the Translation field that is projected in SP as a neat cooperative network teamed up (and managed) by six volunteers.
Challenges of translation process research at the workplace
2014
Translation usually takes place at translators’ workplaces, yet much translation process research refers to data collected under controlled conditions such as the classroom or the lab. Pursuant with recent descriptions of translation as a situated activity comes the necessity of investigating that activity where and when it occurs. Many of the methods that have proved useful in the lab have also been applied in the field, and some of the challenges associated with investigating translation at the workplace are common to any kind of empirical translation research. However, certain workplace constraints present special challenges to everyone involved. Some solutions that were developed for a …
The Diccionario Inglés-Español de Contabilidad: Traducción and the Diccionario Inglés-Español de Contabilidad: Traducción de Frases y Expresiones: Tw…
2014
This paper focuses on the role dictionaries play in a translation situation. This role is analysed in terms of the tenets of the Function Theory of Lexicography, which proposes that users do not have needs in general but punctual needs in specific situations. For example, translators of accounting texts need insertable equivalents whose meanings and language behaviour are clearly described. Furthermore, translators also need contextual data on domain-specific consensual usage. The construction of the Accounting Dictionaries and Diccionarios de Contabilidad reveals that the Function Theory offers theoretical and practical solutions for constructing dictionaries that target user needs in a pr…
Dietary Conversions and Forms of Life
2019
This paper regards the emergence of forms of life in the field of food and dietary choices. It aims at connecting meat-free diets with the notion of form of life, especially focussing on the moment of “conversion” from an omnivourous diet to vegetarianism or veganism. The semiotic mechanisms of transitions between forms of life connected to dietary regimens will be highlighted. How does the conversion happen? Like in spiritual and religious discourses, the conversion is often a striking event, a punctual episode in the subject’s life, affecting particularly his/her pathemic and sensorial spheres. In other cases, conversions imply complex and slow processes, affecting pragmatic and cognitive…
Traduction et analogie dans le champ franco-roumain
2018
Our research entitled Translation and Analogy in the Franco-Romanian Field is globally carried out within the framework of translation studies, considered as an application area of contemporary linguistic and psychological theories operating with the concepts of analogy, conceptualization and motivation (P Monneret, (2004), D. Hofstadter, E. Sander, (2013).The thesis consists of four parts : the first two, Translation and Analogy, represent a theoretical approach aiming to offer a new perspective on translational thinking from an interdisciplinary point of view, including analogical linguistics, philosophy and cognitive psychology, while the last two, Analogical and Phraseological Aspects i…

Fertility and Polarized Cell Growth Depends on eIF5A for Translation of Polyproline-Rich Formins in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
2014
eIF5A is an essential and evolutionary conserved translation elongation factor, which has recently been proposed to be required for the translation of proteins with consecutive prolines. The binding of eIF5A to ribosomes occurs upon its activation by hypusination, a modification that requires spermidine, an essential factor for mammalian fertility that also promotes yeast mating. We show that in response to pheromone, hypusinated eIF5A is required for shmoo formation, localization of polarisome components, induction of cell fusion proteins, and actin assembly in yeast. We also show that eIF5A is required for the translation of Bni1, a proline-rich formin involved in polarized growth during …
