Experimental realization of a pillared metasurface for flexural wave focusing
2021
International audience; A metasurface is an array of subwavelength units with modulated wave responses that show great potential for the control of refractive/reflective properties in compact functional devices. In this work, we propose an elastic metasurface consisting of a line of pillars with gradient heights, erected on a homogeneous plate. The change in the resonant frequencies associated with the height gradient allows us to achieve transmitted phase response covering a range of 2π, while the amplitude response remains at a relatively high level. We employ the pillared units to design a focusing metasurface and compare the properties of the focal spots through simulation and experimen…
Broadband focused waves with compensated spatial dispersion: transverse versus axial balance.
2007
We determine the constraints an ABCD optical system must verify to achieve, at the focal region, broadband waves with compensated spatial dispersion either along the optical axis, called on-axis isodiffracting fields, or in the lateral direction, here named in-plane isodiffracting beams. An optical configuration is identified for generating both types of achromatic broadband focused wave fields. An experimental verification is also provided.
Experimental demonstration of hyperbolic patterns.
2008
We give experimental evidence of hyperbolic patterns in a nonlinear optical resonator. Such transverse patterns are a new kind of 2D dissipative structures, characterized by a distribution of the active modes along hyperbolas in the transverse wave-vector domain, in contrast with the usual (elliptic) patterns where the active modes distribute along rings. The hyperbolic character is realized by manipulating diffraction inside the optical resonator with cylindrical lenses. We also investigate theoretically hyperbolic patterns in corresponding Swift-Hohenberg models.
Non-Conventional Tunable Spatial Filtering
1987
A virtual display of the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of any object is formed in the transverse source plane by theyirtual diffracted rays extqn0ing in the region to the left of the screen containing the transparencyl),2). Except for a few cases '')"°), the concept of virtual Fourier transform appears not to have been made use of. The main idea of this paper is, bearing in mind the property referred to in the above paragraph, to describe a novel spatial filtering technique. In this way, one can obtain different filtered images, by simply moving the point source along the optical axis. The basic theory is described below.
A DIC-based study of flexural behaviour of roving/mat/roving pultruded composites
2015
Abstract This paper reports a study of the flexural behaviour and resultant failure modes in E-glass/polyester pultruded composites. The digital image correlation (DIC) method is used to estimate the effect of fibre orientation on failure behaviour in thick beams, taking into account the presence of continuous filament mat layer (CFM) in the stacking sequence. In particular, the tests were carried out for specimens with off-axis angle of 0°, 7.5°, 15°, 30°, 45° and 90°. The crack initiation and the failure mechanisms depend on the mutual interaction between the stiffness properties of different areas in the stacking sequence. An influence index (I) was introduced to evaluate the magnitude o…
Orlicz–Sobolev extensions and measure density condition
2010
Abstract We study the extension properties of Orlicz–Sobolev functions both in Euclidean spaces and in metric measure spaces equipped with a doubling measure. We show that a set E ⊂ R satisfying a measure density condition admits a bounded linear extension operator from the trace space W 1 , Ψ ( R n ) | E to W 1 , Ψ ( R n ) . Then we show that a domain, in which the Sobolev embedding theorem or a Poincare-type inequality holds, satisfies the measure density condition. It follows that the existence of a bounded, possibly non-linear extension operator or even the surjectivity of the trace operator implies the measure density condition and hence the existence of a bounded linear extension oper…

First Measurement of Transverse-Spin-Dependent Azimuthal Asymmetries in the Drell-Yan Process
2017
The first measurement of transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries in the pion-induced Drell-Yan (DY) process is reported. We use the CERN SPS 190 GeV/$c$, $\pi^{-}$ beam and a transversely polarized ammonia target. Three azimuthal asymmetries giving access to different transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) are extracted using dimuon events with invariant mass between 4.3 GeV/$c^2$ and 8.5 GeV/$c^2$. The observed sign of the Sivers asymmetry is found to be consistent with the fundamental prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) that the Sivers TMD PDFs extracted from DY have a sign opposite to the one extracted from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic sc…
Matching factorization theorems with an inverse-error weighting
2018
We propose a new fast method to match factorization theorems applicable in different kinematical regions, such as the transverse-momentum-dependent and the collinear factorization theorems in Quantum Chromodynamics. At variance with well-known approaches relying on their simple addition and subsequent subtraction of double-counted contributions, ours simply builds on their weighting using the theory uncertainties deduced from the factorization theorems themselves. This allows us to estimate the unknown complete matched cross section from an inverse-error-weighted average. The method is simple and provides an evaluation of the theoretical uncertainty of the matched cross section associated w…
