Correlation patterns from massive phonons in 1+1 dimensional acoustic black holes: A toy model

2018

Transverse excitations in analogue black holes induce a mass like term in the longitudinal mode equation. With a simple toy model we show that correlation functions display a rather rich structure characterized by groups of parallel peaks. For the most part the structure is completely different from that found in the massless case.

Neutron skin and centrality classification in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at the LHC

2015

The concept of centrality in high-energy nuclear collisions has recently become a subject of an active debate. In particular, the experimental methods to determine the centrality that have given reasonable results for many observables in high-energy lead-lead collisions at the LHC have led to surprising behaviour in the case of proton-lead collisions. In this letter, we discuss the possibility to calibrate the experimental determination of centrality by asymmetries caused by mutually different spatial distributions of protons and neutrons inside the nuclei --- a well-known phenomenon in nuclear physics known as the neutron-skin effect.

Compressive behavior of short high-strength concrete columns

2010

Abstract The focus of the present paper is the compressive response of short high strength reinforced concrete members. Members have square transverse cross-sections and they are reinforced with longitudinal steel bars and transverse stirrups. A preliminary analysis to check the stability condition of longitudinal bars was made to verify that buckling occurs after yielding in compression. Prescriptions on required diameter and spacing of stirrups are given. In the following, a model is presented which allows us to evaluate the confinement pressures exercised by transverse steel and by longitudinal bars during the loading process taking into account the interaction of the stirrups with the i…

Shear design of high strength concrete beams in MRFs

2019

This paper presents the criteria for the shear design of high strength concrete (HSC) beams in moment resisting frames (MRFs). The formulation of an analytical model is provided for the case of beams with longitudinal reinforcement in the presence of transverse stirrups. The model is of additive type, in the meaning that the shear resistance of the beam is evaluated as the sum of several contributions. In particular, the contribution of concrete, longitudinal rebars, and transversal reinforcement are taken into account. Furthermore, for assessing the concrete contribution, a classical approach is followed, according to which two effects arise in the shear mechanism: the arc and the beam eff…

Influence of steel reinforcements on the behavior of compressed high strength R.C. circular columns

2012

Abstract In the present paper the focus is on the compressive response of short high strength reinforced concrete members having circular transverse cross-sections and reinforced with longitudinal steel bars and transverse spirals or hoops. An analytical model is proposed which allows one to estimate the confinement pressures exerted by transverse steel and by longitudinal bars during the loading process, taking into account the interaction of the hoops or spirals with the inner core both in the plane of the transverse steel and in the space between two successive hoops. Yielding of steel spirals or hoops and longitudinal bars including buckling phenomena and damage to the concrete core are…

An accurate optical technique for measuring the nuclear polarisation of 3He gas

2010

12 pages; International audience; In the metastability exchange optical pumping cells of our on-site production unit and of our other experimental set-ups, we use a light absorption technique to measure the 3He nuclear polarisation. It involves weak probe beams at 1083 nm, that are either perpendicular or parallel to the magnetic field and cell axis, with suitable light polarisations. When metastability exchange collisions control the populations of the sublevels in the 23S state, absolute values of the 3He ground state nuclear polarisation are directly inferred from the ratio of the absorption rates measured for these probe beams. Our report focuses on the transverse detection scheme for w…

Skyrmion-number dependence of spin-transfer torque on magnetic bubbles

2015

We theoretically study the skyrmion-number dependence of spin-transfer torque acting on magnetic bubbles. The skymrion number of magnetic bubbles can take any integer value depending on the magnetic profile on its circumference and the size of the bubble. We find that the transverse motion of a bubble with respect to the charge current is greatly suppressed as the absolute value of the skyrmion number departs from unity, whereas the longitudinal motion is less sensitive.
