Long-term changes in the breeding period diet of Bonelli's eagle (Aquila fasciata) in Sicily, Italy

2019

Context: Dietary analyses are essential to achieve a better understanding of animal ecology. In the case of endangered species, assessing dietary requirements is crucial to improve their management and conservation. The Bonelli's eagle (Aquila fasciata) has experienced a severe decline throughout its breeding range in Europe and, in Italy, fewer than 50 pairs remain, and only in Sicily. This species is subject to major threats, including changes in landscape composition and, consequently, prey availability, which is further aggravated by the occurrence of viral diseases in the case of rabbits. Aims: To provide current data on the diet of the Bonelli's eagle in Sicily during the breeding per…

Tuning the Electrochemistry of Free-Base Porphyrins in Acidic Nonaqueous Media: Influence of Solvent, Supporting Electrolyte, and Ring Substituents

2016

International audience; A detailed study of reduction potentials, electroreduction mechanisms and acid-base chemistry was carried out on two series of free-base porphyrins in nonaqueous media. The first series is represented by four-pyrrole substituted tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) derivatives, two of which are planar and two of which are nonplanar in their non-protonated form. The second comprises porphyrins with 0-4 meso-phenyl groups on the macrocycle. Equilibrium constants for conversion of each neutral porphyrin to its diprotic [H4P] 2+ form were determined and the electrochemistry was then elucidated as a function of: (i) type of nonaqueous solvent, (ii) anion of supporting electrolyte, …

Free-volume Study in GeS2-Ga2S3-CsCl Chalcohalide Glasses Using Positron Annihilation Technique

2015

Abstract Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy combined with Doppler broadening of annihilation radiation was applied to study free-volume entities in Ge-Ga-S glasses having different amount of CsCl additives. It is shown that the structural changes caused by CsCl additives can be adequately described by positron trapping modes determined within two-state model. The results testify in a favor of rather unchanged nature of corresponding free-volume voids responsible for positron trapping in the studied glasses, when mainly concentration of these traps is a subject to most significant changes with composition.

The effect of arm-crank exercise training on power output, spirometry and cardiac function and level of autonomy in persons with tetraplegia

2021

Quantum-state-selective decay spectroscopy of 213Ra

2017

An experimental scheme combining the mass resolving power of a Penning trap with contemporary decay spectroscopy has been established at GSI Darmstadt. The Universal Linear Accelerator (UNILAC) at GSI Darmstadt provided a 48Ca beam impinging on a thin 170Er target foil. Subsequent to velocity filtering of reaction products in the Separator for Heavy Ion reaction Products (SHIP), the nuclear ground state of the 5n evaporation channel 213Ra was mass-selected in SHIPTRAP, and the 213Ra ions were finally transferred into an array of silicon strip detectors surrounded by large composite germanium detectors. Based on comprehensive geant4 simulations and supported by theoretical calculations, the …

Integrating facies and structural analyses with subsidence history in a Jurassic-Cretaceous intraplatform basin: Outcome for paleogeography of the Pa…

2016

Abstract We illustrate the tectono-sedimentary evolution of a Jurassic–Cretaceous intraplatform basin in a fold and thrust belt present setting (Cala Rossa basin). Detailed stratigraphy and facies analysis of Upper Triassic–Eocene successions outcropping in the Palermo Mts (NW Sicily), integrated with structural analysis, restoration and basin analysis, led to recognize and describe into the intraplatform basin the proximal and distal depositional areas respect to the bordered carbonate platform sectors. Carbonate platform was characterized by a rimmed reef growing with progradational trends towards the basin, as suggested by the several reworked shallow-water materials interlayered into th…

The relationship between eruptive activity, flank collapse, and sea level at volcanic islands: A long-term (>1 Ma) record offshore Montserrat, Les…

2016

Hole U1395B, drilled southeast of Montserrat during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 340, provides a long (>1 Ma) and detailed record of eruptive and mass-wasting events (>130 discrete events). This record can be used to explore the temporal evolution in volcanic activity and landslides at an arc volcano. Analysis of tephra fall and volcaniclastic turbidite deposits in the drill cores reveals three heightened periods of volcanic activity on the island of Montserrat (∼930 to ∼900 ka, ∼810 to ∼760 ka, and ∼190 to ∼120 ka) that coincide with periods of increased volcano instability and mass-wasting. The youngest of these periods marks the peak in activity at the Soufriere Hills vol…

Inferring True Species Richness and Complete Abundance Distribution in Six Reef-fish Communities from Red-sea, Using the Numerical Extrapolation of I…

2019

Even when ecological communities are incompletely sampled (which is most frequent in practice, at least for species-rich assemblages including many rare species), it remains possible to retrieve much more information than could be expected first, by applying numerical extrapolation to incomplete field data. Indeed, recently developed procedures of numerical extrapolation of partial samplings now allow to estimate, with fair accuracy, not only the number of the still unrecorded species but, moreover, the distribution of abundances of each of these unrecorded species, thereby making available the full range of the Species Abundance Distribution, despite dealing with incomplete data only. In t…

Activity overlap between mesocarnivores and prey in the Central Mongolian steppe

2021

Research on the ecology and behaviour of mesocarnivores and their prey is scant in Mongolia. We investigated activity patterns of a guild of mesocarnivores (red fox, Pallas's cat and beech marten) and their prey (Siberian marmot, Daurian pika, Brandt vole, Mongolian gerbil and Mongolian silver vole) using 21 camera traps (effort = 1155 camera days) in Central Mongolia from 25st of May to 20th August 2019. Activity patterns of mesocarnivores were cathemeral (i.e. no difference between diurnal, nocturnal and crepuscular detections, although activity peaked at sunrise). Among prey, the Siberian marmot and the Daurian pika were diurnal, whereas the Mongolian gerbil and the Mongolian silver vole…

Correlations between productivity elements in Lolium perenne L. species for new varieties resistant to drought

2010

Perennial ryegrass is considered the most important perennial gramineous plant due to the many possibilities of use (grass and fodder) [6, 9, 15].With the increasing emphasis put on increasing the area of green space, obtaining new biological forms - varieties of the main species of gramineous plants for turf, with increased resistance to drought and land during the summer, may represent an important objective of the research companies producing such seed [6, 7].In the present study, are given researches on correlations between productivity elements, obtained in an experiment that simulates conditions of severe drought soil, to different genotypes of the species Lolium perenne L., which is …
