Learning Curve in Surgical Treatment of Odontoid Fixation for a Series of Type II C2 Fractures
2019
The craniovertebral junction (CVJ) is a complex anatomical area upon which most of the motion of the upper cervical spine depends [1]. Because of its unique range of motion, the CVJ is subject to several types of traumatic injury; it has been shown that odontoid fractures are the most common ones in the general population and are the most common isolated spinal fractures [2]. Accounting for up to 18% of all cervical fractures, odontoid fractures are the most common ones in elderly patients [3], in whom they account for up to 60% of spinal cord injuries [4].
Deconstructing and reconstructing resilience: a dynamic network approach
2019
Resilience is still often viewed as a unitary personality construct that, as a kind of anti-nosological entity, protects individuals against stress-related mental problems. However, increasing evidence indicates that the maintenance of mental health in the face of adversity results from complex and dynamic processes of adaptation to stressors that involve the activation of several separable protective factors. Such resilience factors can reside at biological, psychological and social levels and may include stable predispositions (such as genotype or personality traits) and malleable properties, skills, capacities or external circumstances (such as gene expression patterns, emotion regulatio…

Following traumatic brain injury (TBI) neuroinflammatory processes promote neuronal cell loss. Alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) is a neuropeptide with immunomodulatory properties, which may offer neuroprotection. Due to short half-life and pigmentary side-effects of α-MSH, the C-terminal tripeptide α-MSH(11–13) may be an anti-inflammatory alternative. The present study investigated the mRNA concentrations of the precursor hormone proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and of melanocortin receptors 1 and 4 (MC1R/MC4R) in naive mice and 15 min, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h after controlled cortical impact (CCI). Regulation of POMC and MC4R expression did not change after trauma, while MC1R levels incr…
Standards for the diagnosis and management of complex regional pain syndrome: Results of a European Pain Federation task force.
2019
Background: Complex regional pain syndrome is a painful and disabling post-traumatic primary pain disorder. Acute and chronic complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) are major clinical challenges. In Europe, progress is hampered by significant heterogeneity in clinical practice. We sought to establish standards for the diagnosis and management of CRPS. Methods: The European Pain Federation established a pan-European task force of experts in CRPS who followed a four-stage consensus challenge process to produce mandatory quality standards worded as grammatically imperative (must-do) statements. Results: We developed 17 standards in 8 areas of care. There are 2 standards in diagnosis, 1 in multi…
"Ei se tarkoita, että haluaisimme sen ajan takaisin" : virolaisten muistoja ja mielikuvia neuvostoajasta
2022
Luku perustuu väitöskirjani Muistojen ja kansallisen historiakulttuurin rajapinnoilla. Viron neuvostoaika kolmen sukupolven kertomana (2021) lukuun, jossa käsittelen eri-ikäisten virolaisten muistoja ja mielikuvia elämästä neuvosto-Virossa. Väitöskirjassani tutkin neuvostoajan muistelemista virolaisissa perheissä ja yksityisen muistelun suhdetta laajemman tason virolaiseen historiakulttuuriin. Muistojen periytyvyyttä tarkastellaan kolmen sukupolven sisällä. Tutkimukseni pohjautuu haastatteluihin, jotka olen toteuttanut vuosina 2018–2019 suullisina yksilöhaastatteluina viron kielellä joko haastateltavien kodeissa tai heidän valitsemissaan paikoissa. peerReviewed
Domestic dexterity and cultural policy : the idea of cottage industry and historical experience in Finland from the great famine to the reconstructio…
2016
The concept of cottage industry (kotiteollisuus) referred especially to rural craft practices. For the promotion of cottage industries, a state administrative organ and a network of cottage industry associations and schools were established. A sphere developed and monitored by specialists, cottage industry policies were planned as official committee work. However, the matter was usually addressed as ‘the idea of cottage industry’ (kotiteollisuusaate). In this study, the historical idea of cottage industry and its cultural and political backgrounds are analysed. The starting point of the investigation is in the post-WWII Cottage Industry Production Committee, but from its years of activity, …

Trauma and storytelling in Betty Louise Bell’s Faces in the Moon
2018
The dominant understanding of trauma as an epistemological crisis that can be mimetically passed on to readers has in the twenty-first century been criticized for its apolitical and ahistorical orientations. As a way to assess this criticism, this article examines trauma and storytelling in Betty Louise Bell’s Faces in the Moon (1994), a novel which places the trauma of sexual violence in a broader context of settler colonialism. Reading the novel in dialog with American Indian studies and research on the writings of women of color offers an exploration of key aspects of trauma theory, such as the notions of unrepresentability, punctuality, transmissibility, belatedness, and passive witness…
