Extracorporeal Stimulation of Sacral Nerve Roots for Observation of Pelvic Autonomic Nerve Integrity: Description of a Novel Methodological Setup.

2017

Introduction: Neurophysiologic monitoring can improve autonomic nerve sparing during critical phases of rectal cancer surgery. Objectives: To develop a system for extracorporeal stimulation of sacral nerve roots. Methods: Dedicated software controlled a ten-electrode stimulation array by switching between different electrode configurations and current levels. A built-in impedance and current level measurement assessed the effectiveness of current injection. Intra-anal surface electromyography (sEMG) informed on targeting the sacral nerve roots. All tests were performed on five pig specimens. Results: During switching between electrode configurations, the system delivered 100% of the set cur…

Thermally induced doping in controlled atmosphere on Graphene

2017

Since its experimental breakthrough discovery in 2004, Graphene (Gr) paved the way for the study of the "flatland" of two dimensional (2D) materials. These systems are an emerging topic of interest in solid state physics and amterial sciences, but nont only, and today count a family of monoatomic layer of C atoms in hexgonal honey comb crystalline structure.

Dose verification with EPR/alanine dosimeters in Helical Tomotherapy Stereotactic Radiosurgery (HT SRS) treatments

2016

Intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a technique to deliver an ablative radiation dose with an extremely sharp dose gradient to small brain tumors. This tecnique allows to deliver high doses of radiation to the tumor sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. In this study the accuracy of the dose delivered in a SRS session by a non conventional radiotherapy machine, the TomoTherapy Hi-Art System, was investigated using an "end-to-end" test. This is perfome d by means of alanine Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) pe llets. The response of these dosimeters is compared to that of gafchromic films which are particularly suitable for two-dimensional dose verification providing accura…

Effects of thermal treatments in controlled atmosphere on the Ce oxidation state in Ce-Ti-Eu doped SiO2 sol-gel glasses

2011

We report an experimental study by optical absorption, photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopies of the modifications induced on Ce–Ti-Eu doped SiO2 glasses by thermal treatments in controlled atmosphere. Samples with Ce content varying up to 5,000 part per million by weight (ppm) and with Ti and Eu content fixed at 40 and 300 ppm respectively, have been investigated. The treatments were done in inert atmosphere of He and in O2 atmosphere at 390 C and 100 bar. Our experiments show that only Ce4? ions are affected by He treatments, whereas both Ce4? and Ce3? ions are affected by O2 treatments. The obtained results are interpreted on the basis of microstructural changes induced by the therma…

Comparing medical treatment in Crohn's disease

2013

The drugs available for inflammatory bowel disease are aminosalicylates, antibiotics, steroids, immunosuppressors and biologics. The effectiveness of these drugs has been evaluated in many randomized clinical trials, mainly versus placebo. Few studies have been conducted comparing the different drugs among themselves, owing to the methodological problems raised by comparative trials, such as sample size and blindness. This review focuses mainly on the randomized clinical trials that have compared different treatments. Of course comparisons are mainly between drugs used in a particular setting (mild, moderate and severe disease). However, on many occasions there is no homogeneity in these cl…

Combining split-and-merge and multi-seed region growing algorithms for uterine fibroid segmentation in MRgFUS treatments

2016

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that can affect female patients during reproductive years. Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) represents a noninvasive approach that uses thermal ablation principles to treat symptomatic fibroids. During traditional treatment planning, uterus, fibroids, and surrounding organs at risk must be manually marked on MR images by an operator. After treatment, an operator must segment, again manually, treated areas to evaluate the non-perfused volume (NPV) inside the fibroids. Both pre- and post-treatment procedures are time-consuming and operator-dependent. This paper presents a novel method, based on an advanced direct region detection model, …

Genetic contribution in sporadic thoracic aortic aneurysm? Emerging evidence of genetic variants related to TLR-4-mediated signaling pathway as risk …

2015

Abstract Sporadic thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA) and dissections are one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in those older than 65 years. The presentation of TAA is varied and often silent. Thus, sporadic TAA detection is often fortuitous, with identification occurring during a routine physical examination or during an unrelated medical evaluation. Once suspected, confirmation by imaging clinical approaches is needed to allow the choose of the unique treatments for TAA, namely the surgery procedures, including elective surgery or endovascular repair before the onset of catastrophic and fatal complications, such as dissection or rupture. At present, there a…
