Labour market segmentation in Spain: is legislation leading to a reduction of duality?

2016

Abstract: In the last decades, the Spanish legislature has expressed its concern regarding the negative impact of the existing duality in its national labour market. Many of the employment Acts adopted in the last few years specifically mention this problem in their preambles. In order to analyse the effectiveness of the measures adopted about this question it is necessary to highlight the two different ways to approach the problem of duality. On the one hand, the existing dual- ity could be reduced by making the access to temporary contacts of employment harder (reducing the number and the possibilities of temporary contracts and increasing the labour cost of these contracts) On the other …

Job precariousness among lawyers in Spain

2019

This article stems from an interest in discovering how working conditions have changed in qualified professions in Spain, concentrating on lawyers. Using a qualitative method, we have found significant sources of precariousness that are transforming the profession's ways. Throughout this article, light has been cast on the connections between the changing professional model of the lawyer's job over the past three decades and the emergence of precarious situations. Our findings highlight that there has been a transformation in the occupation of lawyers in Spain: income and professional careers are marked by extreme uncertainty, raising psychosocial risks.

Occupation and Risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and Its Subtypes: A Pooled Analysis from the InterLymph Consortium

2016

Background: Various occupations have been associated with an elevated risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), but results have been inconsistent across studies. Objectives: We investigated occupational risk of NHL and of four common NHL subtypes with particular focus on occupations of a priori interest. Methods: We conducted a pooled analysis of 10,046 cases and 12,025 controls from 10 NHL studies participating in the InterLymph Consortium. We harmonized the occupational coding using the 1968 International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO-1968) and grouped occupations previously associated with NHL into 25 a priori groups. Odds ratios (ORs) adjusted for center, age, and sex were det…

Computers and young workers' wages in europe

2013

In this work evidence was found that wage differentials are in favour of those workers who have a home computer. In order to achieve these results the frontier stochastic method and the Kernel filter for analising errors was used. The research is based on the data provided by the survey of the European Community Household Panel (ECHP). Taking this survey as a starting point, a data panel is built containing those individuals that have remained in the sample for seven consecutives years. The results demonstrate that with the execption of Denmark, workers in each analised country, i.e. Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom have a wage premium measured by its closeness to the wage front…

Job preservation efforts: when does job insecurity prompt performance?

2020

PurposeWhile job insecurity generally impedes performance, there may be circumstances under which it can prompt performance. The purpose of this paper is to examine a specific situation (reorganization) in which job insecurity may prompt task and contextual performance. The authors propose that performance can represent a job preservation strategy, to which employees may only resort when supervisor-issued ratings of performance are instrumental toward securing one’s job. The authors hypothesize that because of this instrumentality, job insecurity will motivate employees’ performance only when they have low intrinsic motivation, and only when they perceive high distributive justice.Design/me…

The ‘gig economy’: employee, self-employed or the need for a special employment regulation?

2017

The digital era has changed employment relationships dramatically, causing a considerable degree of legal uncertainty as to which rules apply in cyberspace. Technology is transforming business organisation in a way that makes employees – as subordinate workers – less necessary. New types of companies, based on the ‘on-demand economy’ or so-called ‘sharing economy’ and dedicated to connecting customers directly with individual service providers, are emerging. These companies conduct their entire core business through workers that they classify as self-employed. In this context, employment law is facing its greatest challenge, as it has to deal with a very different reality to the one existi…

The Effect of Overeducation on Job Content Innovation and Career-Enhancing Strategies Among Young Spanish Employees

2009

The increase of education in younger people and the relative scarcity of qualified jobs available for them make the overeducation of young workers a social issue. We explored the relationships between overeducation and extra-role behaviors (job content innovation and career-enhancing strategies) as well as the direct and moderating role of personal initiative and intrinsic work values in these relationships. We collected data from a sample of 638 young Spanish employees. As expected, there were negative relationships between overeducation and content innovation and career-enhancing strategies. Personal initiative and intrinsic work values related positively to extra-role behaviors. Moreove…
