Depressive symptoms and long-term income: The Young Finns Study

Abstract Background Higher depressive symptoms have been associated with lower future income. However, studies examining this issue have had limited follow-up times and have used self-reported measures of income. Also, possible confounders or mediators have not been accounted. Methods 971 women and 738 men were selected from the ongoing prospective Young Finns Study (YFS) that began in 1980. Depressive symptoms were measured in 1992 when participants were from 15 to 30 years old. This study examined the relationship between income and physical activity by using three measures to illustrate daily physical activity: the self-reported physical activity index for leisure-time physical activity, pedometer-based total steps for overall daily physical activity, and pedometer-based aerobic steps that reflect continuous steps for more than 10 min at a time. The study population consisted of 753 adults from Finland (mean age 41.7 years; 64% women) who participated in 2011 in the follow-up of the ongoing Young Finns study. This paper examines the relationship between body composition and earnings in a developing country setting. We use body mass index, waist circumference and hip circumference. Exploiting the panel structure of our longitudinal survey, we find that along with BMI, waist circumference is related to higher earnings in Indonesia. peerReviewed

This thesis consists of five empirical studies which seek to understand the processes behind interregional migration decisions and the spatial concentration of labour. The empirical studies are preceded by an introductory chapter that, among other topics, discusses spatial concentration in Finland between 1980 and 2000, and surveys prior evidence on the determinants of migration. The thesis mainly utilises Finnish longitudinal population census data from 1993?1996. In this study, we examine the prevalence of income and career concerns among emerging adults in three different welfare states during COVID-19: Finland ( n = 309), Sweden ( n = 324), and the United Kingdom ( n = 343). This study also delves into how factors such as one’s self-perceived financial situation, generalized mistrust, loneliness and socio-demographics are related to emerging adults’ income and career concerns. Results showed that individuals from the United Kingdom were more likely to experience increased income and career concerns than those in Finland and Sweden. Labor market performance of dropouts: the role of personality

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide evidence on labor market careers of dropouts with various levels of education. Design/methodology/approach – The paper compares the labor market careers of dropouts and non-dropouts between ages 15 and 50 by using longitudinal data. The paper analyses how the results change when the authors control for differences in personality characteristics. Findings – The paper finds that dropping out diminishes one's success in the labor market but this connection is reduced when the model is augmented with personality. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore Finnish adolescents’ subjective health literacy (HL) in association to school achievement, learning difficulties, educational aspirations, and family affluence. Odotettujen tulojen tiedetään vaihtelevan koulutusasteiden ja -alojen välillä, mutta kuinka suuria erot tarkemmin ottaen ovat ja miten erot ovat kehittyneet viime vuosina? Artikkelissa pyritään antamaan vastauksia näihin ysymyksiin Tilastokeskuksen yksilötason rekisteriaineistojen analyysin avulla. Tulosten mukaan parhaassa työiässä olevien 36–45-vuotiaiden suomalaisten koulutukselleen saama tuotto on pysynyt keskimäärin korkeana 1990-luvun puolivälin jälkeen ikäryhmän koulutustason merkittävästä kasvusta huolimatta. Sekä tuottojen tasossa että niiden trendeissä havaitaan kuitenkin merkittäviä eroja eri opintoaloilta valmistuneiden välillä. nonPeerReviewed
