Bacterial endotoxin activity is elevated in patients with decompensated chronic heart failure (HF) and acts as a potent stimulus for immune activation. We sought to determine whether endotoxin, at an activity level seen in vivo (around 0.6 EU/ml), is sufficient to stimulate the secretion of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and TNF-alpha soluble receptor (sTNFR2) in ex vivo whole blood from patients with HF. Sepsis in chemotherapy-associated neutropenia is a major cause of mortality in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Early diagnosis of sepsis is crucial for patient survival. We analyzed the value of prospectively measuring serum concentrations of soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor type II (sTNF-RII) in patients with AML for early diagnosis of sepsis in neutropenia. Therefore, 54 adult patients with AML and neutropenia were followed around the onset of fever. A total of 59 febrile episodes were documented. Background: C-reactive protein (CRP) predicts cardiovascular outcome. Oxidative stress is considered to be involved in endothelial alteration. Objective To find new aspects of the systemic involvement of the Immune System in psoriasis, we determined serum levels of interleukin-18 (IL-18) (Th1-inducing factor cytokine), CD30 (Th2 marker) and sICAM-1 (adhesion molecule). In addition we evaluated the correlation between these molecules and psoriasis area and severity index (PASI).
