What happens when software developers are (un)happy
2017
The growing literature on affect among software developers mostly reports on the linkage between happiness, software quality, and developer productivity. Understanding happiness and unhappiness in all its components -- positive and negative emotions and moods -- is an attractive and important endeavor. Scholars in industrial and organizational psychology have suggested that understanding happiness and unhappiness could lead to cost-effective ways of enhancing working conditions, job performance, and to limiting the occurrence of psychological disorders. Our comprehension of the consequences of (un)happiness among developers is still too shallow, being mainly expressed in terms of developmen…
Edmund Husserl
2020
This chapter indicates that Edmund Husserl’s published and unpublished writings contain important contributions to the phenomenological study of emotional life, and to our understanding of the emotions more broadly. It focuses on Husserl’s most productive and significant period as a phenomenologist of the emotions dating between the publication of Logical Investigations in 1900 and Ideas I in 1913. In the second volume of Logical Investigations, Husserl briefly takes up the question of whether the phenomenologist ought to class feelings (Gefühle) as intentional experiences. Non-intentional feelings are exclusively confined to what Husserl calls sensory feelings (sinnliche Gefühle) or affect…
Piloting the Behavioral and emotional rating scale-2 (BERS-2) in a Chinese primary school
2015
Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale-2 is based on strength-based assessment with three rating scales which include Youth Rating Scale, Parent Rating Scale and Teacher Rating Scale to assess behavioral and emotional strengths and if they have behavioral and emotional problems. This research was studied in a Chinese primary school with the original BERS-2 questionnaires translated into Chinese. The translated BERS-2 questionnaires were distributed and after the data was collected, the result was analyzed in SPSS. However, the result was negative to be summarized the BERS-2 was not valid enough in this primary school, and the Affective Strength in the YRS was not reliable enough, but the ove…
School grades as predictors of self-esteem and changes in internalizing problems: A longitudinal study from fourth through seventh grade
2020
This longitudinal study of 562 students (from ages 10 to 13) investigated whether developmental changes in internalizing problems (emotional and peer problems) can be predicted by school grades in mathematics and language arts and whether these predictive relations are mediated by students' self-esteem. The data comprised of teacher-rated internalizing problems, grades in math and language arts, and student self-ratings of self-esteem. The latent change score modeling indicated that math grades positively predicted self-esteem. Furthermore, lower self-esteem was related to an increase in internalizing and emotional problems in the total sample, and to an increase in peer problems in boys. T…
Childhood aggression and the co-occurrence of behavioural and emotional problems: results across ages 3–16 years from multiple raters in six cohorts …
2018
Childhood aggression and its resulting consequences inflict a huge burden on affected children, their relatives, teachers, peers and society as a whole. Aggression during childhood rarely occurs in isolation and is correlated with other symptoms of childhood psychopathology. In this paper, we aim to describe and improve the understanding of the co-occurrence of aggression with other forms of childhood psychopathology. We focus on the co-occurrence of aggression and other childhood behavioural and emotional problems, including other externalising problems, attention problems and anxiety-depression. The data were brought together within the EU-ACTION (Aggression in Children: unravelling gene-…
Magis – A magical adventure: Using a mobile game to deliver an ACT intervention for elementary schoolchildren in classroom settings
2022
Studies of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have shown that this health emergency has affected especially young people. Supporting the well-being of children is thus particularly urgent. However, the high prevalence of ill-being among children requires novel approaches to providing help. Health care resources are limited, and many children did not receive support even before the pandemic. The current study presents a novel approach to delivering brief interventions for school-aged children. A mobile game based on acceptance and commitment therapy was used to increase psychological flexibility and well-being among 10 to 12-year-old schoolchildren. A sample of 106 students played the game…
Frame analysis of psychotherapists’ perspectives on the development of psychological disorders
2021
AbstractThe development of psychological disorders has been explained by several psychological theories and remains under debate. Psychotherapists, however, have insights into the emergence and development of psychological disorders that stem from both theory and practice. The constantly evolving field of psychotherapy prompts reconsideration, specifically when psychotherapists’ views on the development of disorders impacts their treatment approach. In addition, theoretical orientation and years of clinical experience, while known to influence psychotherapists’ viewpoints also merit further study. Applying Erving Goffman’s frame analysis, semi structured interviews with psychotherapists wer…

Varhaiskasvatushenkilöstön käsityksiä lasten tunteiden säätelytaitojen kehittymisestä – Käytäntöön integroitu koulutus ammatillisen kehittymisen tuke…
2021
Lapset tarvitsevat aikuisen tukea oppiakseen säätelemään tunteitaan. Jotta varhaiskasvatuksen ammattilainen voi tarjota lapsille monipuolista ja sensitiivistä tunteiden säätelyn tukea osana pedagogista toimintaa, häneltä odotetaan oman roolin tiedostamista lapsen tunteiden kanssasäätelijänä. Lasten tunteiden säätelytaitojen tukeminen pedagogisessa toiminnassa rakentuu kanssasäätelijän teoreettiselle tiedolle ja vaatii sen soveltamista käytännössä. Tässä tutkimuksessa on tarkasteltu, millaisia käsityksiä varhaiskasvatushenkilöstöllä on tunteiden kanssasäätelystä, ja kuinka käsitykset muuttuvat, kun heidän tietopohjaansa tunteiden kanssasäätelystä vahvistetaan työhön integroidun koulutuskokon…
Music therapeutic emotional processing (MEP): Expression, awareness, and pain predict therapeutic outcome
2022
Successful emotional processing is pivotal for the therapeutic change, and music can support emotional processing. However, we know little on how music-based emotional processing actually predicts clinical outcomes. This study investigated music therapeutic emotional processing (MEP) as a predictor of therapeutic outcome in treatment for depression. Data consisted of self-reports of 64 clients (age range 19–57, 74% female) from a clinical trial (12 sessions) of integrative improvisational music therapy (IIMT). A 19-item MEP questionnaire was developed for assessing clients’ experiences after sessions. Emergent MEP factors were correlated with clients’ perceptions of the therapeutic value o…
