OPTIMIZATION OF COGENERATION PLANT FOR APPLICATIONS IN FOOD INDUSTRY
2013
Cogeneration systems represent an effective solution for optimizing energy performance of users with contemporary thermal and electrical energy demand. An energy audit of an industrial pasta factory equipped with a cogeneration system natural gas fuelled has carried out along last two years. This CHP plant, with a 650 kWe capacity, currently covers a relevant fraction of the electric and high-temperature heat loads during peak hours, while it is switched off during off-peak hours because of the much lower electricity price. Heat content of flue gases is recovered by two cascaded gas-diathermic oil and diathermic oil- water heat exchangers; the superheated water obtained is then supplied to …
Introduction of Offshore Wave, Wind and Solar Energies in Vietnam
2020
In Vietnam, the energy demand shows an ever-increasing trend. To limit the utilization of fossil fuels and the following consequences for the environment, renewable energy sources must be adopted. In this context, the paper assesses the utilization of offshore wind and sea wave, by considering a commercial wind turbine and a prototypical wave energy converter. Solar energy can be optionally also collected by this device. An algorithm is introduced to find the best composition of the three sources able to cover a desired share of energy demand. The approach is applied to Ca Mau, a province in the southern part of Vietnam. Finally, the results encourage the adoption of these energy sources th…
Mini Wind Plant to Power Telecommunication Systems: a Case Study in Sicily
2013
The ever increasing problems related to air pollution and the difficulties for power lines to reach inaccessible areas are pushing to find new solutions for powering telecommunications equipments (TLC). The renewable energy systems, although relatively expensive, have the required characteristics. The purpose of this work is to find a solution based on a low power wind turbine to serve a real telecommunication site located near Palermo, the main city of Sicily (Italy).
A telescopic wind tower with reduced environmental impact - The Perima Project
2019
A prototype of a telescopic pole for wind energy production with low environmental impact and its lifting system for a 60 to 250 kW turbine and a height of 30 m have been designed and manufactured. A telescopic tower, which is raised and lowered by automation or by remote control, allows to differentiate the presence of the generator within the landscape over time. Research target: the optimal design of the telescopic coupling, the design for maintaining the preload and for the rotational decoupling, the optimization of the pairs of sleeves, the design of the pegs and the bushes of the jack-up lifting system. All the components of the wind tower have been preliminary analyzed through FEM st…
Wind tunnel testing, numerical analyses and shape optimization of a vertical axis wind turbine
2011
In this work the aerodynamic efficiency of a small commercial vertical axis wind turbine is investigated experimentally and numerically. The turbine is a Darrieus type with three vertical airfoil blades having helical twist of 78 degrees, height 1.45m and diameter of 1.45m. The airfoils have a chord of 222 mm and a thickness of 35 mm. The experimental studies were made in a wind tunnel where a hot-wire anemometer was used to measure the wind speed. The power curves of the turbine were extracted using a generator connected with an inverter able to vary the resistant moment applied to the turbine and to measure its resulting angular speed. The energy produced by the turbine itself at various …
Pumps as turbines regulation study through a decision-support algorithm
2022
The water distribution network (WDN) is subject to water leakages due to pipes breaking, which induces a wastage of water and overconsumption of power for pumps. Leakages are directly related to pressure in the pipes. To reduce leakages, pressure reducing valves (PRV) are installed in water distribution networks to reduce pressure in the pipes. However, pressure reduction induces a loss of energy which is wasted within the PRV. To recover a part of this energy, pressure reducing valves can be replaced by using pumps as turbines (PATs). Since head and flow rates are variable in the WDN, it is necessary to regulate the PAT, which does not function properly under variable upstream conditions. …
Numerical prediction of flow fields in baffled stirred vessels: A comparison of alternative modelling approaches
1998
Abstract Numerical simulations of the flow field in baffled mixing tanks, based on three alternative methods, are presented and discussed. In the first method, the impeller is not explicitly simulated, and its effects are modelled by imposing suitable, empirically derived, boundary conditions to the external flow. In the second method, the whole vessel volume is divided into two concentric, partially overlapping, regions. In the inner region, containing the impeller, the flow field is simulated in the rotating reference frame of the latter, while in the outer region simulations are conducted in the reference frame of the laboratory. Information is iteratively exchanged between the two regio…
Dense solid–liquid off-bottom suspension dynamics: Simulation and experiment
2009
Dense solid–liquid off-bottom suspension inside a baffled mechanically stirred tank equipped with a standard Rushton turbine is investigated. Dynamic evolution of the suspension from start-up to steady-state conditions has been determined by both visual experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFDs). A classical Eulerian–Eulerian multifluid model (MFM) along with the “homogeneous” k–ε turbulence model is adopted to simulate suspension dynamics. In these systems the drag inter-phase force affects both solids suspension and distribution. Therefore, different computational approaches are tested in order to compute this term. Simulation results are compared with images obtained from the re…
CFD simulations of early- to fully-turbulent conditions in unbaffled and baffled vessels stirred by a Rushton turbine
2021
Abstract Laboratory scale unbaffled tanks provided with a top cover and a baffled tank both stirred by a Rushton turbine were simulated by carrying out RANS simulations. Three different turbulence models were adopted (k- ω SST, k- e and the SSG Reynolds stress model) to predict the flow field and the relevant performance parameters (power and pumping numbers) of the tank operated from early to fully turbulent conditions. CFD results were compared with literature experimental data and DNS simulation results to validate and properly compare the models. In the range of Reynolds numbers investigated, results showed that, for the unbaffled tank, the SSG model based on Reynolds stresses is a bett…
