Relation between temperature and mortality in thirteen Spanish cities

2010

In this study we examined the shape of the association between temperature and mortality in 13 Spanish cities representing a wide range of climatic and socio-demographic conditions. The temperature value linked with minimum mortality (MMT) and the slopes before and after the turning point (MMT) were calculated. Most cities showed a V-shaped temperature-mortality relationship. MMTs were generally higher in cities with warmer climates. Cold and heat effects also depended on climate: effects were greater in hotter cities but lesser in cities with higher variability. The effect of heat was greater than the effect of cold. The effect of cold and MMT was, in general, greater for cardio-respirator…

Moving Averages for Market Timing

2016

This paper begins by presenting the moving average methodology of detecting the direction of a trend and identifying turning points in the trend in real time. The paper then proceeds to introduce the general weighted moving average, derives some of its key properties, and discusses how to quantitatively assess the two important characteristics of a moving average: the average lag time and the smoothness. Finally the paper aims to give an overview of some specific types of moving averages used in market timing. These types include regular moving averages, moving averages of moving averages, and mixed moving averages with less lag time. Different types of moving averages are compared to each …

SO2emissions and the environmental Kuznets curve: the case of Chinese provinces

2009

This paper aims at estimating the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) for the sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions in a panel of 28 Chinese provinces. First, using a fixed effects model, econometric findings reveal an N shape EKC with a turning point of 4500 yuans (index 1990). However, a Chow test reveals a break in 1995, so that the estimation of the model indicates an increasing linear relationship between GDP per capita and SO2 emissions. The previous results imply that the decrease of the Chinese sulphur dioxide emissions during 1996–1999 did not result from the ECK but from an exogenous public action.

Strategies for Progress: Looking for Firm Ground

2015

Over the last thirty years, there have been various and increasing efforts made to establish effective and consistent public service interpreting and translation. Good progress has been made but there are impasses. This paper attempts to stand back and look objectively at where, and more importantly how, we might proceed from here. This could be said to be a turning point for legal interpreting for two reasons. Firstly, enough time has elapsed for us to copy our scientific colleagues, who view the process of exploring and eliminating unsatisfactory approaches overtly, so that what does not work is recognised and discarded. Secondly, this process of exploration has enabled us to clarify and …

Evolución histórica de la autonomía de la voluntad en el Derecho matrimonial

2021

The autonomy of the will or power of self-regulation of relationships derived from marriage is a subject that is on the rise and that we can qualify as novel. More and more couples are opting to proceed making use of this power to self-regulate both personal and property effects derived from their union or its future breakdown. In the Spanish legal system there is no precise and complete regulation of the subject, without all these figures being equally legislated, although all are admitted without any doubt by jurisprudence. In recent years there has been an evolution of Family law, traditionally very reluctant to give space to self-regulation. Our Constitution marks a turning point by cha…

Historical Events in the Background of Hilbert’s Seventh Paris Problem

2015

David Hilbert’s lecture, “Mathematical Problems,” [Hilbert 1900] delivered in Paris in 1900 at the Second International Congress of Mathematicians, has long been recognized as marking a milestone in the history of mathematics. Certainly for Hilbert himself, this marked the single greatest event and a true turning point in his storied career. When historians and mathematicians have written about the so-called Hilbert problems, they have usually looked forward into the twentieth century, sometimes by viewing their resolution as markers for mathematical progress.

The potential of the ground state of NaRb

2004

The X$^{1}\Sigma ^{+}$ state of NaRb was studied by Fourier transform spectroscopy. An accurate potential energy curve was derived from more than 8800 transitions in isotopomers $^{23}$Na$^{85}$Rb and $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb. This potential reproduces the experimental observations within their uncertainties of 0.003 \rcm to 0.007 \rcm. The outer classical turning point of the last observed energy level ($v''=76$, $J''=27$) lies at $\approx 12.4$ \AA, leading to a energy of 4.5 \rcm below the ground state asymptote.

Political Theorizing as a Dimension of Political Life

2005

Quentin Skinner’s thesis ‘that political life itself sets the main problems for the political theorist’ marks a turning point in the study of the history of political thought. The Protestant princes who revised Luther’s doctrine of disobedience in order to save Lutheranism as a political force are the best example of this ‘Skinnerian revolution’ in The Foundations of Modern Political Thought. This is in accordance with his claim that principles play a legitimating and innovating role in politics. A tacit implication of the thesis is that we should not only read theorists as politicians but also read politicians as theorists. The politician possesses a special competence in discerning betwe…

Things matter: about materiality and recovery from mental health difficulties

2020

ABSTRACT Purpose The aim of this study is to explore how material things might become involved in the recovery process of people with mental health difficulties. Method Empirical material from three different studies on various aspects concerning mental health issues that each of the authors had conducted was reanalysed through a phenomenological item analysis. Results We discovered that mundane objects such as a mobile phone, a bench, a door and a key have agency to contribute to peoples’ recovery and wellbeing. Things became agents that created contexts that initiated physical, social and emotional movements. Conclusion By giving attention to materiality we might become aware of the impor…
