JYU-malli : keskitetty julkaisutiedonkeruu Jyväskylän yliopistossa

2020

Continuous experimentation on artificial intelligence software : a research agenda

2020

Moving from experiments to industrial level AI software development requires a shift from understanding AI/ ML model attributes as a standalone experiment to know-how integrating and operating AI models in a large-scale software system. It is a growing demand for adopting state-of-the-art software engineering paradigms into AI development, so that the development efforts can be aligned with business strategies in a lean and fast-paced manner. We describe AI development as an “unknown unknown” problem where both business needs and AI models evolve over time. We describe a holistic view of an iterative, continuous approach to develop industrial AI software basing on business goals, requiremen…

When does Regression discontinuity design work? Evidence from random election outcomes

2018

We use elections data in which a large number of ties in vote counts between candidates are resolved via a lottery to study the personal incumbency advantage. We benchmark non‐experimental regression discontinuity design (RDD) estimates against the estimate produced by this experiment that takes place exactly at the cutoff. The experimental estimate suggests that there is no personal incumbency advantage. In contrast, conventional local polynomial RDD estimates suggest a moderate and statistically significant effect. Bias‐corrected RDD estimates that apply robust inference are, however, in line with the experimental estimate. Therefore, state‐of‐the‐art implementation of RDD can meet the re…

Horizons: Nuclear Astrophysics in the 2020s and Beyond

2022

Nuclear astrophysics is a field at the intersection of nuclear physics and astrophysics, which seeks to understand the nuclear engines of astronomical objects and the origin of the chemical elements. This white paper summarizes progress and status of the field, the new open questions that have emerged, and the tremendous scientific opportunities that have opened up with major advances in capabilities across an ever growing number of disciplines and subfields that need to be integrated. We take a holistic view of the field discussing the unique challenges and opportunities in nuclear astrophysics in regards to science, diversity, education, and the interdisciplinarity and breadth of the field…

Fluid flow simulations meet high-speed video : Computer vision comparison of droplet dynamics

2018

Hypothesis While multiphase flows, particularly droplet dynamics, are ordinary in nature as well as in industrial processes, their mathematical and computational modelling continue to pose challenging research tasks - patent approaches for tackling them are yet to be found. The lack of analytical flow field solutions for non-trivial droplet dynamics hinders validation of computer simulations and, hence, their application in research problems. High-speed videos and computer vision algorithms can provide a viable approach to validate simulations directly against experiments. Experiments Droplets of water (or glycerol-water mixtures) impacting on both hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces …

Generation of stimulus features for analysis of FMRI during natural auditory experiences

2014

In contrast to block and event-related designs for fMRI experiments, it becomes much more difficult to extract events of interest in the complex continuous stimulus for finding corresponding blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) responses. Recently, in a free music listening fMRI experiment, acoustic features of the naturalistic music stimulus were first extracted, and then principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to select the features of interest acting as the stimulus sequences. For feature generation, kernel PCA has shown its superiority over PCA in various applications, since it can implicitly exploit nonlinear relationship among features and such relationship seems to exist genera…

Quality management of research, development and innovation activities in Finnish universities of applied sciences

2018

This study utilises the quality audit reports of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences to describe the quality management of their research, development and innovation activities (RDI). The institutions are trying to find ways of enlarging the volume of RDI activities and this is clearly reflected in the ways in which they manage quality. Much of the focus lies on the project proposal preparation phase and strategic direction of resources, while less attention has been paid to monitoring and developing the quality of the output. These emphases are analysed in relation to Harvey & Green’s seminal notions on quality in an attempt to see how useful this theoretical framework is in explainin…

Hypotheses engineering : first essential steps of experiment-driven software development

2019

Recent studies have proposed the use of experiments to guide software development in order to build features that the user really wants. Some authors argue that this approach represents a new way to develop software that is different from the traditional requirement-driven one. In this position paper, we propose the discipline of Hypotheses Engineering in comparison to Requirements Engineering, highlighting the importance of proper handling hypotheses that guide experiments. We derive a set of practices within this discipline and present how the literature has tackled them up to now. Finally, we propose a set of research questions that could guide future work towards helping practitioners. …
