Introducing Online Learning Communities to Tomorrow's Teachers Case Study of eTwinning Teachers Training Pilot Project 2014/15
2015
Educational trends in e-Learning are ever-changing and this has brought into discussion numerous solutions and platforms to encourage the use of ICT in schools. The eTwinning action was given start in 2005 as one of the principal actions of the European Commission's e-Learning Programme. It is now a part of 'Erasmus+ 2014-2020' and has gradually been expanding all over Europe providing both teachers and students with innovative and creative ideas, learning/teaching experience, multimedia applications and interactive tools. This research paper aims to introduce eTwinning Online Learning Platform as one of the biggest communities for schools in Europe and discuss University of Palermo's invol…
Responsible cognitive digital clones as decision-makers: A design science research study
2022
This study uses a design science research methodology to develop and evaluate the Pi-Mind agent, an information technology artefact that acts as a responsible, resilient, ubiquitous cognitive clone – or a digital copy – and an autonomous representative of a human decision-maker. Pi-Mind agents can learn the decision-making capabilities of their “donors” in a specific training environment based on generative adversarial networks. A trained clone can be used by a decision-maker as an additional resource for one’s own cognitive enhancement, as an autonomous representative, or even as a replacement when appropriate. The assumption regarding this approach is as follows: when someone was forced t…
Experiences of qualified teachers of the future in the scope of an international eTwinning project.
2022
The aim of robust social learning networks such as eTwinning, which is a part of Erasmus internationality programs, is to foster and promote the creation and development of awareness for respect, tolerance, and understanding by ensuring the integration of young people from different countries and cultures through dialogue. Phenomenological research design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in this research in which the experiences of teacher candidates regarding the eTwinning project were analyzed. The focus of the transnational collaboration was that student teachers from different cultures use eTwinning’s secure and safe digital platform, Twinspace, to contribute to their c…
Innovating Initial Teacher Education: faculty members’ engagement in eTwinning
2023
The personal characteristics of teachers can be catalysts for their own and others’ learning, as much as their knowledge and competences. It explains why «the first and foremost resources teachers use are themselves» (Caena, 2014, p. 2). The selection, preparation and guidance of teachers throughout initial teacher education and the following stages of their careers are therefore crucial. This study involved faculty members teaching in Primary Education Degree Course at University of Palermo during the academic year 2021- 2022 and it aims at introducing and promoting eTwinning networking platform in higher education. It also aims at increasing the involvement of university teachers, PhD stu…
Empowering future teachers’ intercultural awareness with eTwinning
2022
This paper aims at examining the impact of eTwinning experience on empowering future teachers’ intercultural awareness within two different international eTwinning projects. The first project “What kind of World do we want?” has been given start in October 2021 and apart from University of Palermo it involves two different universities from Turkey. The second project “Qualified teacher of the future” has had its start in November with German, French and Turkish partner universities. The very first results underlines the importance of equipping students with twenty-first century skills and the important role eTwinning plays in this, as well as indicating main challenges which need to be addr…
Enhancing innovative pedagogical practices in Initial Teacher Education: eTwinning
2021
