Crack dynamics and crack surfaces in elastic beam lattices

The dynamics of propagating cracks is analyzed in elastic two-dimensional lattices of beams. At early times, inertia effects and static stress enhancement combine so that the crack-tip velocity is found to behave as t1/7. At late times a minimal crack-tip model reproduces the numerical simulation results. With no disorder and for fast loading, a “mirror-mist-mirror” crack-surface pattern emerges. Introduction of disorder leads, however, to the formation of the “mirror-mist-hackle”–type interface typical in many experimental situations. Peer reviewed
Hydrodynamical forces acting on particles in a two-dimensional flow near a solid wall

The hydrodynamical forces acting on a single particle and on a random rigid array of particles suspended in a two-dimensional shear flow of Newtonian fluid near a rigid wall were studied numerically in the flow regime where the relevant Reynolds numbers are of the order of unity. The simulations were done with conventional finite volume method for single-particle cases and with lattice-Boltzmann method for many-particle cases. A set of comparison cases was solved with both methods in order to check the accuracy of the lattice-Boltzmann method. A simple microsuperspace model in 2 + 1 spacetime dimensions

Abstract We quantize the closed Friedmann model in 2 + 1 spacetime dimensions using euclidean path-integral approach and a simple microsuperspace model. A relationship between integration measure and operator ordering in the Wheeler-DeWitt equation is found within our model. Solutions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation are exactly reproduced from the path integral using suitable integration contours in the complex plane.
Positioning in a flat two-dimensional space-time

The basic theory on relativistic positioning systems in a two-dimensional space-time and the analysis of the possibility of making relativistic gravimetry with these systems have been presented elsewhere [Phys. Rev. D 73 , 084017 (2006); Phys. Rev. D 74 , 104003 (2006)]. Here we summarize these results and we outline new issues on the relativistic positioning systems in Minkowski plane. We point out that the accelerations of the emitters and of the user along their trajectories are determined by the sole knowledge of the emitter positioning data and of the acceleration of only one of the emitters and only during a light echo interval.

FARCOS, a new array for femtoscopy and correlation spectroscopy

Correlations between two or more particles can be used as a tool to explore the space-time features of nuclear reactions as well as spectroscopic properties of produced unbound clusters. In order to have new options to study the mentioned correlations, FARCOS (Femtoscope ARray for COrrelations and Spectroscopy) has been conceived as a compact high resolution array, composed of square telescopes. Inimer-Promoted Synthesis of Branched and Hyperbranched Polylactide Copolymers

A series of (hyper)branched poly(l-lactide)(PLLA) copolymers has been prepared by ring-opening multibranching copolymerization of l-lactide with a hydroxyl-functional (ABB′) lactone inimer, 5HDON (5-hydroxymethyl-1,4-dioxane-2-on). Polymerization was conducted in bulk and solution and catalyzed either by stanneous-2-ethyl hexanoate (Sn(Oct)2) or an organic base, 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD). Precise structural characterization of the resulting branched copolyester structures was accomplished by a combination of 2D NMR techniques, relying on the comparison with model compounds. Characterization of EprA, a major extracellular protein of Oenococcus oeni with protease activity

International audience; Extracellular proteins from Oenococcus oeni. a wine-making bacterium, were isolated during growth on media differing by their nitrogen content. Analysis by two-dimensional electrophoresis revealed a low number of protein signals. Among the main spots, one signal corresponded to a single protein, which contained a lysine repeat domain characteristic of cell-wall hydrolases. We demonstrated that this major protein, named EprA, was able to hydrolyse several proteins. The heterologous production of this protein in Escherichia coli confirmed the protease activity of EprA. Analysis of serine proteases from marine sponges by 2-D zymography.

Proteolytic activities isolated from the marine demosponges Geodia cydonium and Suberites domuncula were analyzed by 2-D zymography, a technique that combines IEF and zymography. After purification, a 200 kDa proteolytically active protein band was obtained from G. cydonium when analyzed in gelatin copolymerized 1-D zymograms. The enzymatic activity was quantified using alpha-N-benzoyl-D-arginine p-nitroanilide (BAPNA) as a substrate and corresponded to a serine protease. The protease activity was resistant to urea and SDS. DTT and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) did not significantly change the protease activity, but induced a shift in molecular mass of the proteolytic band to lower M(r) values a…
