Learning at the interface of higher education and work : Experiences of students, teachers and workplace partners

Connectivity between education and workplaces is often seen as a central element in preparing students for the future labour market. This chapter presents findings from a study that examined strengthening the connectivity between Finnish higher education institutions and workplaces. The study focused on 11 work-related study modules where students carried out commissioned assignments or projects from companies or public sector organisations. The data were collected by interviewing 88 students, 35 teachers, and 17 workplace partners. Rapid changes in working life have raised awareness of the need for lifelong learning among personnel, and there is increasing concern regarding the sustainability of such learning, especially in growth companies, where learning can be seen as a prerequisite for many work practices. Terveysalan työharjoittelun toteutumista on arvosteltu siitä, että oppilaitokset panostavat entistä vähemmän työharjoittelun ohjaukseen ja harjoittelupaikkojen kanssa tehtävään yhteistyöhön. Harjoittelussa perinteiset työtavat ja vallitseva työkulttuuri siirretään kritiikittömästi opiskelijoille. Koulun antamat tiedot ja harjoittelupaikan edellyttämät taidot eivät kohtaa. Artikkelissa luodaan näkymiä uudenlaiseen työssäoppimiseen tehostamalla koulun ja työpaikkojen välistä yhteistyötä.
