In autoimmune disease the functional deficiency of T suppressor cells, also described in Type I diabetes, may be restored through immunoglobulin (Ig) infusion, which increases antigen phagocytosis, NK activity, cell clones and antibody anti-idiotype responses. Sixteen Type I diabetic patients were studied: eight were treated soon after the initial correction of disease-onset glycemic deterioration with intensive intravenous (i.v.) 7S Ig treatment (0.4 g/kg/BW) for 1 week and once per week for 6 months, whilst the remaining patients constituted the control group. Polymorphisms of the renin-angiotensin system influence height in normotensive women in a Spanish population.

The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of the polymorphisms G-6A of the angiotensinogen gene, insertion/deletion (I/D) of the angiotensin-converting enzyme, and C573T of the angiotensin II AT1 receptor gene on a healthy, middle-age population. A total of 370 (194 women) healthy normotensive Caucasian subjects, aged 25-50 yr old, were selected from the general population. A significant association was found between height and the C573T polymorphism in women (P0.001). After adjustment for age, this association remained significant (P0.002). In type 1 diabetic patients, the replacement of subcutaneous insulin infusion by intraperitoneal insulin infusion restores the normal physiological gradient between the portal vein and the peripheral circulation, which is likely to modify HDL metabolism. This stable isotope kinetic study was designed to compare HDL apolipoprotein (apo) AI metabolism in seven type 1 diabetic patients first treated by continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion by an external pump and then 3 months after the beginning of intraperitoneal insulin infusion by an implantable pump. Binding of monocytes from normolipidemic hyperglycemic patients with type 1 diabetes to endothelial cells is increased in vitro.

Increased endothelial binding and emigration of monocytes play a dominant role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in diabetes mellitus. Previous studies revealed that hyperlipidemia correlates with monocyte binding in vitro. The aim of this study was to characterize the monocyte-endothelial interaction of leucocytes of hyperglycemic patients with type 1 diabetes but lacking hyperlipidemia. We isolated monocytes from healthy controls and normolipidemic type 1 diabetes patients with elevated levels of HbA1c and quantified monocyte binding by an immunoilluminometric cell adhesion assay. Serum levels of substance P are decreased in patients with type 1 diabetes.

Morphological and immunohistochemical studies in diabetic subjects have shown a depletion of the neuropeptide substance P (SP) in the central and peripheral nervous system. This is the first study investigating serum levels of substance P in type 1 diabetes patients (n=50) and controls (n=75) by means of an enzyme immunoassay. The serum level of SP was significantly decreased in the diabetic group compared to the control group (10.12+/-0.29 vs. 12.25+/-0.38 pg/ml; p<0.0001). Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy in type 1 diabetic patients with and without peripheral neuropathy.

One hundred Type 1 diabetic patients (54 men, 46 women) mean age 28.9 +/- 8.4 years, were selected from among individuals referred to our hospital, with no previous diagnosis of diabetic chronic complications including diabetic neuropathy.
