Type II Odontoid Fracture: a case series highlighting the treatment strategies

2019

Background: A type II odontoid fracture, if unstable, can cause spinal cord damage. In this case, it is essential to choose the correct treatment—but the issues of what the correct treatment is and which of the different surgical options is best are quite controversial. In this paper we present strategies for treatment of type II odontoid fracture. Materials and Methods: Thirty consecutive cases of type II odontoid fracture were treated at the Division of Neurosurgery at Villa Sofia Hospital in Palermo (23 cases) and at the Neurosurgical Clinic, University Hospital of Palermo (seven cases), from January 2011 to August 2016. Four patients were treated with external immobilization. Twenty-six…

Selective Binding of Collagen Subtypes by Integrin α1I, α2I, and α10I Domains

2001

Four integrins, namely alpha(1)beta(1), alpha(2)beta(1), alpha(10)beta(1), and alpha(11)beta(1), form a special subclass of cell adhesion receptors. They are all collagen receptors, and they recognize their ligands with an inserted domain (I domain) in their alpha subunit. We have produced the human integrin alpha(10)I domain as a recombinant protein to reveal its ligand binding specificity. In general, alpha(10)I did recognize collagen types I-VI and laminin-1 in a Mg(2+)-dependent manner, whereas its binding to tenascin was only slightly better than to albumin. When alpha(10)I was tested together with the alpha(1)I and alpha(2)I domains, all three I domains seemed to have their own collag…

FACIT collagen (1alpha-chain) is expressed by hemocytes and epidermis during the inflammatory response of the ascidian Ciona intestinalis

2008

Based on previous cloning and sequencing study, real-time PCR and in situ hybridization assays of the inflamed body wall of LPS-injected Ciona intestinalis showed the enhanced gene expression of a collagen with FACIT structural features (Ci-type IX-Col 1a-chain). By using specific antibodies raised against an opportunely chosen Ci-type IX-Col synthetic peptide, the fibroblast property of hemocytes challenged in vitro with LPS (at 4 h) was displayed by flow cytometry, while immunocytochemistry identified hemocytes with large granules (morula cells) as collagen-producing cells. Hemocyte lysate supernatant analyzed in immunoblotting contained a 60 kDa band identifiable as 1a-chain-Ci-type IX-C…

An Augmented Campus Design for Context-aware Service Provision

2005

This paper deals with the design of a multi-modal system for pervasive context-aware service provision and human-environment interaction in augmented environments by the use of Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) or SmartPhones. The system enables mobile devices and remote displays to perform as interaction devices with pervasive applications which run on a dynamically composed server network. Visual interaction for service setup and provision are driven by appropriate graphical interfaces and XML-based protocols, which are dynamically composed according to the type of service and to the user current position by means of a mobile agent-based framework. The paper discusses both protocols, hard…

Relationship benefits and costs in retailing: A cross-industry comparison

2009

Relationship marketing is based on the establishment and maintenance of continuous relationships between buyer and seller as a source of mutual benefits. Following this approach, customers' evaluations of benefits and monetary and non-monetary sacrifices derived from their relationships with the retailer are crucial for the existence of ongoing and successful relationships. Such a perception may, however, vary greatly depending on the type of service provided. In this paper, we analyse customers' assessments of the benefits and costs of their relationships with four types of retailers.

A new species of Metapyroppia Woolley, 1969 (Acari, Oribatida, Peloppiidae) from Nepal

2014

A new species of oribatid mites of the family Peloppiidae, Metapyroppia gigantea n. sp. , is described from Nepal. The genus Metapyroppia is recorded for the first time from the Oriental region. Metapyroppia gigantea n. sp. differs from the type species, Metapyroppia doratosa Woolley, 1969, by the absence of notogastral setae c 2 and c 3 , presence of pointed rostrum and the adanal lyrifissures distanced from the anal plates. The morphology of gnathosoma and legs are presented in detail for the first time for any member of this genus. urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:EEE741F4-4C86-4625-B3FD-48E1DDA1D2D3

The genus Scaphiostomum Braun, 1901 (Trematoda: Brachylaimidae): A systematic review and description of Scaphiostomum palaearcticum n. sp.

1986

A systematic review of the genus Scaphiostomum Braun, 1901 (Trematoda: Brachylaimidae) is presented. Its diagnosis is emended and its position within the subfamily Brachylaiminae Joyeux & Foley, 1930 is established. The subfamily Scaphiostominae Yamaguti, 1958 is considered a synonym of the Brachy-laiminae. Scaphiostomum comprises the following species: S. illatabile Braun, 1901 (type species) from birds in South America, S. pancreaticum McIntosh, 1934 and S. microti (Kruidenier & Gallicchio, 1959) n. comb., both from rodents in North America, and S. palaearcticum n. sp. from rodents in the Balearic Islands (Spain). Scaphiostomum sp. of Lim, 1967 from rodents in Malaysia probably constitute…

Effect of candesartan on progression and regression of retinopathy in type 2 diabetes (DIRECT-Protect 2): a randomised placebo-controlled trial.

2008

Summary Background Results of previous studies suggest that renin-angiotensin system blockers might reduce the burden of diabetic retinopathy. We therefore designed the DIabetic REtinopathy Candesartan Trials (DIRECT) Programme to assess whether candesartan could reduce the incidence and progression of retinopathy in type 1 diabetes. Methods Two randomised, double-blind, parallel-design, placebo-controlled trials were done in 309 centres worldwide. Participants with normotensive, normoalbuminuric type 1 diabetes without retinopathy were recruited to the DIRECT-Prevent 1 trial and those with existing retinopathy were recruited to DIRECT-Protect 1, and were assigned to candesartan 16 mg once …

Adaptation of young teachers at school

2006

Straipsnyje aptariama, kaip Baltijos šalių mokyklose įgyvendinamas (2004–2007) Latvijos mokslo tarybos parengtas jaunųjų mokytojų adaptacijos projektas pirmaisiais darbo metais. Tyrimo dalyviai – 362 Rygos (Latvija), Klaipėdos (Lietuva) ir keturių Latvijos rajonų mokytojai, aukštąsias pedagogines mokyklas baigę 1995–2004 metais. Straipsnyje pateikiami mokslinio tyrimo rezultatai, rodantys mokytojų adaptaciją mokykloje skatinančius ir jai trukdančius veiksnius, vertinamas jaunųjų mokytojų psichologinis pasirengimas dirbti mokykloje. Respondentų teigimu, aukštosiose mokyklose apie pedagoginį darbą teikiama informacija yra objektyvi, jaunieji mokytojai jau pirmaisiais darbo metais sėkmingai ad…
